True, but there are still some genuine scares in this. I rarely get unnerved or scared by horror these days, but this show is so masterful in it's characterizations that it really amplifies the dread and horror. Not to mention just what a tragically sad story it was even without the supernatural elements.

I'm excited that you're reacting to this. I loved it. I'm a fan of Shirley Jackson and the book and the show is.... not like it but I still loved it. I watched all ten episodes in one sitting, from 7 PM to 7 AM. It was really good. People were being over-dramatic about how "scary" it is but it's still chilling and creepy. Worth the watch if you're into family dynamics. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it yet. And I know how you feel about kids, the little ones will get you.

Sithfurion....bro. Episode 6 of this show (Two Storms) is the best piece of television I've seen in YEARS. 55 minute episode consisting of 4 or 5 continuous 15-20 minute long steady cam shots. The way it's pulled off (especially considering there are child actor's involved) is going to blow your mind

one of the best netflix shows in 2018 in general. the ending had me so moved heartbroken and realised the many deep meanings behind so many things that i thought would be left unanswered. i got also dizzy from being so creeped out at times,there is no jumpscare but i cant possibly express how SCARY it truly is. the casting is 10/10 both child and adult actors,my favourite one is the father ,the mother and Neil(Lukas won me as well). one of my favourite series of all time

I absolutely loved this show!! I find it pretty freaky rewatching it you notice things that you wouldn't get the first time watching. An example is at 2:44 Shirley is obviously talking about Theo.

Btw there's a hidden ghost count for this show. The first hidden ghost I saw was when the dad woke up Steven so they can run out of the house, but it was after he locked the bedroom door (before running out) the camera turns to Steven and you can see on the right side there's someone there. Keep a look out, there's hidden ghosts lingering in the background in a lot of scene's. I know I missed a lot for this episode.

It is definitely undextpected and haunting (but not in a traditional sense). I already rewatched it (first watch was with sis and second time with mum). Its still just as fun and gripping the second time around because you see things differently once you know the whole story. You also notice things that you didn't notice before. I really loved this series! I don't think it's very scary though. It's creepy and intense but it's the tragic family shit that's so horrifying and real! Fantastic casting, direction, dialogue and storytelling! Great choice, Thanks💀👻

Belinda R I agree. I tend to be a bit of a wuss when it comes to horror. It’s a genre I avoid. But against my better judgement I decided to give this show a shot and, surprisingly, it has barely scared me so far. I’ve finished the first 4 episodes and the only parts I really found creepy were when Luke goes down in the basement in that dumbwaiter and that creepy tall man with the cane who floats around. I think part of the reason why those two things had more of an impact on me is because we already know that Luke and Nell are the most fucked up as adults. So it heightens the sense of fear/danger when you see what Luke went through as a kid. I have a feeling it will be the same with Nell.

Notice how his older brother isn't wearing a jacket when giving Luke money. It isn't cold...Nell is dead and Luke is feeling her death...her being cold and dead. I can't tell you how awful that makes me feel. I'm a twin as well and I can't even imagine! When they all wake up from her death the way Luke grabs his neck...I can't with that he felt her hanging.

Also, the shows losely based on a book of the same name (which also has two film adaptations, the 99's version with liam neeson and its really good too, "The Haunting").

I'm a huge fan of the book (and the Robert Wise movie version, "The Haunting). I'm two episodes in and even though this show isn't anything like the book, it does do a good job of catching the mood and atmosphere of the book. I was skeptical at first knowing it was loosely based on the book, but so far I think it's pretty damn good.

It's the best one in my opinion. It's very underrated because it aired on a small network, like Black sails. However the production budget is huge, it's close to GOT season 1 budget and it has one of the best worldbuilding and storytelling I've seen in a show so far.
