Horror movies and shows nowadays usually only try to focus mostly on jumpscares and tell the weakest stories. And the horror feel jumps out the window the moment the source of the "evil" or whatever it is... is revealed. The whole "fear of the unknown" thing is the thing that makes these movies creepy and jumpscares effective at all. But then they reveal the thing, give it a weakness and most of the time, the protagonists survive and defeat it. It's so much better when it's an interesting story with good characters, drama and mystery with a sprinkle of horror thrown in at the right moments.

This episode is amazing, and the next one is a cinematographers wet dream. Also, for this episode, the symbolism of Nell being the one who is actually haunting herself is just incredibly well done. A perfect analogy for depression and mental illness. Anyone who has suffered through some sort of mental instability knows that your own worse enemy at that point is yourself and this show does an amazing job at showcasing that.

Depression is also the reason why Nell just sits in the hotel bed for hours without notice. When you're depressed the time moves weird for you. Might also be foreshadowing for her monologue at the end of the season when she talks about time

I just posted about this but I'm in my feels again after reading your comment. This is probably the best allegory for mental illness I've ever seen in media. They were so respectful without sugarcoating anything. I know it can be a trigger for many people, but the frame of Nell hanging was so breathtaking for me. Usually we always see "watered down" versions of these sensitive topics, but it's not inherently bad to show it as-is. Her storyline hit me so deeply, especially since I was at my lowest depression-wise while watching the show. I BAWLED in the flashback where she gets lost and cries to her mother. That encapsulated perfectly how alone and hopeless you can feel when dealing with these issues. It's incredibly precious.

I find 2 particularly sad thing in this plot twist: 1. Little Nell saw bent-neck lady the first night she slept in the house. Which means she's destined to die the moment she set foot in that house. 2. We all think bentneck lady is scary. But she herself is the most scared. Imagine seeing all those past memories before dying horribly 😢

I agree with Markeeta. It’s not about Steve believing or not in the ghosts. The problem for me is that he is constantly giving his siblings sh*t for believing in ghosts. AND THEN he uses those stories he mocks them for, to write a book and make money. That is the problem for me.

Writing that book was his way of dealing with it. He was the oldest of them, he never really saw the ghosts, what he did see was his mom slowly breaking down and his parents tension. From his perspective he is right. Maybe he shouldn't have published the book but as another great youtuber pointed out trauma doesnt always make people addicts or anxious , sometimes it makes people cold and hard. They all had coping mecanisms, this was his.

Luke doesn't see the "Bent Neck Lady" because she is not a ghost. Nell is sensitive like her mom and has 'premonitions' due to her sleep condition where she can access parts of her mind we don't normally have access too. Her husband did indeed die from an aneurysm. At least that is my interpretation. The bent neck lady didn't show up until AFTER her husband died and obviously once you know it's Nell, she would never harm him.

I disgree - he's the reflection of Luke's trauma around being told he doesn't know the difference between what's real and imaginary, like the childhood friend he saw die in front of him that everyone told him was imaginary. In the future, the BOWLER hat ghost, associated with the truth/imaginary binary, shows up whenever he most wants to use (watching deals go down, receiving money from Joey, when he's stolen from and abandoned by her, etc.) as a coping mechanism. All the ghosts are related to fears or trauma or mental health issues. All of them.

The book that this series is based on is called "The Haunting of Hill House", just like Stephen's book, but the plot of all three stories are very different. The real world novel features a doctor trying to prove the existence of the paranormal by inviting random people who have had psychic experiences to a purportedly haunted house (including a girl named Nell/Eleanor and a girl named Theodora) and the nephew of the person who owns the house (a guy named Luke). In this version, Nell, Theo, and Luke are all unrelated. There is no Stephen. Their last names aren't Crain (though I think it's mentioned that a man whose last name was Crain owned the home a long time ago). The author of this book is named Shirley Jackson, so that's where the show got the name "Shirley" from. And in this novel, it's never made clear whether there are actually ghosts or if Nell just goes crazy. Stephen's novel is a prosaic depiction of the "real life" events of what his family supposedly experienced in the house with some creative liberties taken. And then the TV show is what the fictional Crain family actually experienced (colored by their own perspectives).

the idea that nell's life and after life are a closed loop, in my mind, is connected with luke's recovery journey. it's talked about how recovery is the same thing over and over and its a very long process consisting of repetition regardless of the bumps along the road or even full on relapses. it was like nell haunted herself but not out of choice obviously, yet through it she tried to warn her younger self, hence the "no, no, no" from bent neck nellie when alive nellie saw her. bent neck nellie, even through the trauma of her own death and the haunting of herself, she repeated the same warning again and again. who knows, its 4am and im delirious but i needed to share!!

This was a great ep!! I'm usually the stone-faced-Chris of my house, but Nell was the only character that made me actually cry while watching this show; the actress that plays her is so talented, and it only gets better until the last ep (no spoilers but she made me cry again on the finale). I got chills when Nell jumped off the stairs and then we saw her with her neck bent... As a person who struggles with anxiety/depression, and who was at their worst back when binge watching the show, her scenes especially on these two episodes resonated so much with me. Her storyline is a gorgeous allegory for mental illness, while still being truthful and respectful and ugly when it needs to be. Episodes 6 and 5 are my favorites from this show. As someone you has had several sleep paralysis since they were a child, this is one of my favorite television episodes ever. I have never seen sleep paralysis in any show or movie and this show is the perfect depiction of it. From being awake and not being able to move or talk, to seeing shadow people across the room. The thing that happens the most when I have sleep paralysis is that I see this vision of myself floating above me as I'm struggling to move and wake up fully. So the fact the Nell is floating above herself and has been haunting herself when she has sleep paralysis hits home for me.

I suffered from chronic sleep paralysis into adulthood. I couldn't move or talk, I could open my eyes and I could feel AND hear a breathing animal/creature/demon on-top of me. The Sleep paralysis seemingly has disappeared as I moved away from my childhood home. Almost as if there was some deep trauma associated with that space. I still sometimes have dreams of my childhood home, which I haven't lived in for 7 years. But the sleep paralysis is seemingly gone. I tend to believe it's a mental/chemical thing rather than super-natural but it's still really weird and scary.

Steve's book was not fiction- that's the problem. He wrote about his experience living in the house, along with all the stories his siblings would tell him- he wrote about Luke always talking about a little girl who wasn't there, and Nell seeing "the Bent Neck Lady" and things like that in order to draw an audience who was intrigued by ghost stories, and made Hill House out to be haunted- that's how it became "the most famous haunted house in America." And then he turns around and doesn't take any of his family seriously when they're upset by the things they saw there. He was playing his audience and his family.

It's a pretty impressive testament to the storytelling to see how the crew was still shocked by the reveal at the end, even while watching the scene right before where they clearly show the noose around her neck and her hanging in the same position. It doesn't actually "click" until they explicitly show the two Nells in the same room together. Usually the Normies are able to sniff out a twist from a mile away.

One thing to consider with Steve is that he has no one helping him deal with everything that has happened. He was expected to help his siblings and not let them see his problems.

What happened to him, though? They ALL lost their mom. Shirley helped the younger siblings, not Steve, and he's the only one of them who never had anything supernatural happen to him at the house (that he knows of, heheh).

Steve is the one least affected by everything. Nothing happened to him when he was a kid and he was asleep when all that shit was going on the last night at the house as kids.
@acendiatmedia8747
@acendiatmedia8747 4 жыл бұрын
@@SuperRijul Steve is the most affected in terms of non supernatural which can be worse than supernatural, it wasn't the. Ghosts that messed them up directly. Steve is just as exposed to the supernatural but had been taught to rationalize and is old enough too so the house doesn't target him with jump scares. I would say Shirley is easily the least effected on all fronts. Nothing she experiences or sees is something the others don't. Shirley didn't really see anything that night either and Luke/Nell where to young to understand what they saw. Only Theo actually saw much. I won't go into detail since it is spoils certian events but he sees more on the physiological front while his siblings are shielded from it. He was his parents right hand and was treated as young adult which is all fine and good until you basically loose both of your parents and yes the next oldest steps up to help with the younger kids but is mercilessly critical of you. Steve's strongest relationship was with his parents they where gone. Sure Steve is financially the most well of but that's only because he sunk to writing the book, if he hadn't he would be destitute and alone. He also kept all his siblings afloat buy doing it. Steven doesn't even get his own dedicated POV episode like the other siblings!

Actually Suraj we somewhat understand how dreams work and in sleep paralysis it is like an overlap between waking stages and REM sleep so you can hallucinate as your mind is in a very different state than it usually is while awake. Dreams themselves are most likely your brain making sense of random brain signals. Sometimes it may seem like your brain is trying to create realistic scenarios to make sense of the signals. In a way this can prepare us for possible future events hence deja vu. Our brain has created a possible scenario out of random signals millions of times so it isn't surprising that at one point it created a scenario you may actually come across and you will feel like you remember that scenario even if you didn't live it or even remember that dream.

The second seasons of "The Haunting" { the series new name } is called "The Haunting of Bly Manor" and is based on the 1898 novella "The Turn of the Screw" { Desmond's last book on "LOST" } by Henry James. Returning actors are Victoria Pedretti { Nell }, Oliver Jackson-Cohen { Luke }, Kate Siegel { Theo }, Henry Thomas { young Hugh }, and Catherine Parker { Poppy }. The 2001 film "The Others" staring Nicole Kidman Fionnula Flanagan { Eloise - Lost }, and Christopher Eccleston is supposedly loosely based on "The Turn of the Screw" as well.

And to prevent it is by getting enough sleep. I usually get it when i'm really tired. Also it's normal to see a lady at the foot of the bed while experiencing sleep paralysis. Lol

Sleep Paralysis is the most god awful thing to ever happen to me lol. When you can't fucking move a muscle no matter how hard you desperately try.. It's the actual worst. In my case my head was turned towards the wall and this lady was whispering in my ear on the edge of my bed behind me and I COULD NOT turn to look, not that I wanted to. Just knowing for a fact in my brain someone/something was there, it made me believe in ghosts for sure.

The house is a Living Thing. A limbo? Maybe. Maybe all the kids have some abilities, like Theo and the mother. Nell has some sort of clairvoyance, that's would explain a lot. It's all subjective. Just enjoy the psychological drama of a family who lives in a house with too many ghosts.

Basically the house is supernatural and Nell was being haunted by her future self. Once she entered the house it was like her life was decided then and there. By the end of the season you will have a clear idea of how the house works in regards to time and the supernatural aspect. This show mixes both literal paranormal hauntings with personal and life hauntings. Nell's depression, Luke's addiction, and Steve, Shirley, and Theo's way of dealing with/avoiding things are very real problems but a lot of it is influenced by the paranormal shit that happened in the house. I'm not sure where Pat got that the Bent-Neck Lady killed Olivia (the mom) LOL episodes 1-5 are still introducing the story but 6-10 really gives us a lot more meat.

So I've been watching a few reactions to kind of catch up before the second season, even though the stories aren't connected, and it has been enlightening. One thing no other seem to grasp was the locket actually being the rope put around her neck, because I thought it was kind of obvious...but maybe not. So it was nice to see someone finally get it. Then again there are so many things in this series, that it takes multiple viewings to fully grasp.

I love how he's describing the very well-known and studied phenomenon of sleep paralysis as if it's proof of the supernatural... Yes, when you're experiencing sleep paralysis, you try to talk and you can't, and you see strange shapes that you can't explain... That's not supernatural, that's just what happens.

It's funny Surej mentioned his sleep paralysis vision was a woman at the foot of his bed, because the first time I had sleep paralysis was an old dead woman wearing all black at the foot of my bed. I remember having a nightmare seeing an old house in the woods and knowing she was there looking out a window and saw me. I got startled in the dream and I thought I fully woke up, because I realize I'm in my bed, but then she opened my closet and stood at the foot of the bed. I finally blinked and snapped out of it and had tears streaming down my face. I thought my house was haunted until I learned about sleep paralysis years later.

Each kid represent the 5 stages of grief:- Steven- Denial Shirley- Anger Theo- Bargaining Luke- Depression Nell- Acceptance Each character also represent cardinal sins:- Luke- Gluttony. His heroin addiction and constant need to consume more or it. Theo- Lust. The most sexualized member of the family. Confirmed that it may be a problem when found with Kevin. Greed- Steve. He used his families tragedy for monetary gain. Sloth- Nell. Nell is never seen working and most of her story revolves around sleep. Wrath- Olivia. Olivia is seen taking out agression on her children, often yelling or punishing them for little reason. (Nell's writing on the wall) Pride- Hugh. He never admits his faults relating to the house, or in regards to communicating with his children. Even at Nell's funeral he neglects to give them the answers they want. Envy- Shirley. She is often seen criticizing her family on everything they have or don't have. The biggest example being Steve and his writing career. She also has green eyes.
