A few years back I did some backpacking in the Lauterbrunnen/Grindelwald area with a couple of buddies of mine. Stopping in a mountainside lodge for some mac & cheese with a Coke and those multi-bunk huts bring back the memories. You'll never forget it and even the tough days are phenomenal in their own way. You've got the best content on KZbin, keep it comin'.

The swiss signs are cool with the times. The times are actually set by elderly swiss locals so you are comparing yourself to an old swiss citizen. I think it's brilliant.
@simongerber14765 жыл бұрын
That is false. The signs are measured by 15 min/k with a 15 min rest per hour, so effectively 3k/h. Plus every 100 m of elevation is am extra 15min(might be 20) and and im not sure about elevation loss. But it is true that most fit hikers/runners are mich faster than that

That hut actually looked really comfy. I spent many nights in dorms when I did the TMB, and after the third night, provided you had earplugs, you kind of stopped caring about the others.

Another great video. re: dorm bunk rooms. At the hut near the top of Kitadake, the second highest peak in Japan, there are 3-4 dorm rooms. Crowded, men and women, unvented kerosene heater in the middle of the room. When everyone was awake, the women were chattering away making a huge racket. Us men were politely quiet. But after everyone when to sleep the men were snoring like chainsaws. I couldn't breathe. That damned heater. I thought I am at 10,000 feet, there is nothing between Siberia and Mt Fuji to block the fresh air, and I'm in here breathing exhaust fumes. So I grabbed my gear, went outside in the 30-40 mph gust and blowing rain, found a partially sheltered spot near some fuel barrels and crawled into my bivy: REI Minimalist, so mesh, no rain cover - but no problem. I'd thought for weeks how to make it rain proof. THat night solved it in seconds. Duh. Just turn it sideways away from the wind and rain. Best night of my life.

This video gets way more respect with all the angles of you running by and the added time it takes to set up the camera and the go back down to reenact the scene.

Totally appreciate you taking the time to film (particularly as you set the camera down, move through the frame & then have to go pick it up again & later edit it), doing an amazing job. The Arolla area of Switzerland is gorgeous :-) But especially if you aren't descending to a village, the huts are ALL like this: large shared sleeping platforms with mattresses and pillows & duvets provided. Because they run on generators AND everything has be be brought in by helicopter, yep, power is limited and comestibles are expensive - but it's worth it.

Great stuff, and in my region (I was born and raised in Verbier)! In fact you ate at the cabane Mt-Fort, the Mt-Fort itself is way higher but you didn't have to get there in order to reach the Lac des Dix given that you took the Sentier des Chamoix, that explains why 7h40 was actually not applying to you. Prafleuri is actually not that bad a hut, yep you can get better, but you can also get much worse I assure you.

Haha it was insane to try that hut from Orsieres. The 'normal' day hike starts at Cabane du Mont Fort and that is already a heck of a day. I remember endless amounts of stones and a path that was endless, although it was amazingly beautiful and we had blue sky all day. We sometimes couldn't even find the path in summer. We finished with 33.000 steps, and again that is just if you start from Cabane du Mont Fort.

I find the hiking times on the signs here are about 2.5x of the actual time it takes to RUN, so my standard hiking time I take off about 30% from the sign as I move pretty quick. I think if your fit and healthy the sign times are a worst case.
