About Me:
I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

Gratitude is HUGE. I took a year to journal 1,000 blessings. That seemingly simple exercise forced me to value little things like the sounds of leaves blowing in the wind or things I had taken for granted like a warm shower. Expressing gratitude more often most definitely shifted my mindset and I have felt much more peace and joy because if it.

Thank you very much! - Every morning I write down at least three things I am or could be grateful for. Despite not always feeling like it, I "act-as-if". - For example: Despite being separated from the five children and only seeing two of them on a regular basis, I am very grateful for their health, their wits, their capabilities, even their new family and surroundings with a new father. And grateful to have so gifted and well children. - Although I miss them very much. - [Comment: as a nurse I have seen so many ill children in forty years, diseases that do not even have a name yet. Health, we tend to take it for granted. It isn't.]

Thank you for sharing from Corrie’s story. When Betsy died, Corrie located her body. She and another woman were awestruck by the beautiful, peaceful look on Betsy’s face as she lay amongst the corpses. A miracle in light of the starvation and severe illness she had suffered in the camp. Speaking of gratitude, I am grateful for this channel. I learn so much from you, Emma.

If you have never heard of, “ A Course In Miracles,” it is another useful toolkit for those open to it. It focuses specifically on forgiveness and gratitude as well as overcoming the ego. It has Christian influences but is much less dogmatic and has more in tune with Buddhism while in a Christian framework. ACIM is very sincerely devoted to spirituality and the label of Christianity it’s tied to fades if you analyze it. It is about the undoing of the egos role to fool you. Beware the ego is to be loved for the survival mechanism it is and not condemned. If condemned you’ve missed the point of forgiveness toward yourself for having an ego. However subtle the ego gets in the way such as the ego getting in the way of gratitude, forgiveness, humility or love. Thanks for putting these videos up! I have been focusing on gratitude within the last 2 months extensively and life has turned around in many ways. Re-contextualized and oriented toward grace and beauty under the mask of the mundane and even ugly. Beauty is everywhere even if it’s hard to see. I can agree to bet my life on it that gratitude when done properly is very powerful and unforeseen things happen. I began noticing the delicacy and fortune of such little consequences that just are available. The era I live in. I realized I thought I was grateful before but it grew and I realized I took things for granted. Being grateful has lead to moments that have made me tear up. You can start seeing potential ways to develop. Life takes on a certain intimacy and warmth of even being here or even having a resource like this video available to you. It will move too if you let go to gratitude. I had a hard time with life and my personality has become better, healthier, I often have more to give to people now. I have better eye contact. I mean a lot more to life and everyone around all by this trait, gratitude. It really is THAT profound! I have had crippling anxiety, I would rarely take even the smallest of personal risks. It was sad, very sad. If you’re still reading this, know again, this trait, gratitude, will have an excellent effect on your life!

Thanks to your example of Corrie and the fleas, I took a miserable circumstance and challenged myself to write out all the ways my life was better because of this person--who's been biting me like a flea and causing so much misery. Indeed, the more reasons I thought of to be grateful for this person, the better I felt. I believe the next time I see this person, I can smile instead of experiencing the need to fight or run away! Being grateful for the people I love and who share my values is easy. Being grateful for those I disagree with and want to avoid is the real challenge! Thank you, Emma!

Thank you so much for detailing ways to practice gratitude. The sitting quietly and thinking about when something went well really helps me get started. Your kids are adorable! my daughters share names with River and Gracie! Grateful for you and your videos.
