Personal expressive writing is a simple and powerful self-care tool, freely available to all of us, that promotes healing, stress reduction, personal growth and inner peace. In our grief-adverse culture that celebrates positivity over vulnerability, faced as we are with global uncertainty, writing can be a helpful tool that builds resilience by allowing us to give voice to our messy inner lives and our negative emotions. Writing is a way to let go of storylines and memories that keep us stuck so that we can write empowered self narratives. Previously a University lecturer and Doctor now runs writing retreats in Mission Beach and writing webinars globally. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Writing saves my life every day. I lost two brothers to Muscular Dystrophy. I never got over it, but I cope with it because of my writing.

I have been writing since I was 13. People sometimes judge you while your journal never will. You are free to write whatever you feel and think. A journal is a reliable friend who will never disappoint you.

well said! So happy that your journal has been your best friend since your teenage years. As you say, it's our most reliable, least judgmental friend. :)

I do journaling quite often and it always (always!) clears my mind, bring the consciousness back and helps to let go the feeling of being overwhelmed with life as you release the things on the paper, not keeping them inside. Very great speaker this lady is and I enjoyed her background story👍

I am severely mentally ill and through writing I have the power to stop myself from being depressed constantly as I use to b. I write sometimes for days with no sleep. My story has drastically changed over this past 2 yes. I went from the poor me victim mind set to I am a magnificent worrier woman of my life. I still have to take my daily medication to balance the chimacal imbalance but my depressions r not nearly as darkroom as often and I start every morning with a new story that I will strive each day to make come true.

This is my second video about the power of writing. I journal. I have been journaling off and on since I was a teen. But even as I write in my journal. Before the pen hits the page, I’m thinking about the best way to say things. Even if it is only going to be seen by my eyes. Sometimes I do just write. But usually somewhere along the process I am trying to think of the best way to say things.
