I remember in 2007, I was working as a tow truck operator based out of 38th St between 10 and 11th Aves. In that, summer, we could all hear the blasting of the tunnels, which were going on all season. When the station first opened, I waited about 2 weeks for the crowds to minimize and I took that inclined elevator. Back then, the elevator shaft was new and very clean. Wow. Nice station. Probably they went down too deep to not to disturb the utility lines. Some say it was mined deep so the 7 train would go to Secaucus, NJ.

The Olympic committee likes a brand new (or extensively redesigned) flashy main stadium but times have changed in that they'll have to accept anything that isn't falling down. London 2012 did a good job though. I Hope to see a North East Megalopolis USA bid which would make much better use of existing venues.

Going to NJ would be the better option for a south/west extension since current connections between the two states are inadequate. It could also provide Hudson County with some subway service into Manhattan, easing congestion in the Lincoln Tunnel and Port Authority Bus Terminal. Also it can provide some redundancy in the transportation system in case the North River Tunnels go out.

I overall think city planning in NYC is the problem - or lack of it. Hudson Yards is really a dead-end, geographically speaking, and getting additional utilization out of any transportation corridors into it is very limited. The 7 line is fine for what it was built for (well, sort of fine) - getting people from Queens to Manhattan. But in Manhattan we need some kind of fast exchange system to shovel people from different destinations - between Grand Central and all the way to Wall Street. In some places it actually works now!, not all. But Hudson Yards is out of the way and does not fit. Attaching it to #7 was just a copout - we can't afford a complete system rebuild, so here we are. Oh I am taking #7 tomorrow, but not planning on visiting Hudson Yards - that's just pointless.
@TheRailLeaguer2 жыл бұрын
Hudson Yards is still undergoing some development so usage of the sustain will increase. Then you also have to factor in Javits Center, with the extension of the 7 train providing a better rail connection to the center.

This station has made me late for many a MegaBus trying to navigate the working escalators (remember half of the station was closed off for a long time around opening, meaning the escalator was the only way out). Also the funicular/elevator/whatever is very cool and unique, I just have no faith in the MTA to maintain their systems. Would be great if it wasn't so deep. It takes several minutes just to get from the platform to the surface. Why the need for 2 mezzanines? Seems like they could have gotten away with just 1 mezzanine with proper design. If they were smart, they could have also built the station a lot shallower (like directly under the Hudson Yards tracks) and dramatically shortened the amount of time it takes to get from the platform to surface level.
