It is true that there have been lots of heretics both in the past and present. But please remember this: God existed before any human or heretic existed and God will continue to exist even when everything else fades away. "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away." Luke 21:33 "The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever." Isaiah 40:8 "Your word, LORD, is eternal. It stands firm in the heavens." Psalm 119:89

I find biblical studies so much more interesting when we learn the history of the whole mess. As a person who grew up in the church, and the daughter of a pastor, I have always had sometimes frustrating secular interest in theology and biblical studies. It made me annoying at Bible study! But, I always appreciate how respectful this channel is of religion. A lot of "skeptics" tend to be jerks about their atheism. I'm... vaguely... a person of faith, and I appreciate being able to come to your channel and learn. Thanks.

Till 325 AD, not a single historian or writer wrote about Jesus Christ or any of his disciples . BEFORE THE FIRST COUNCIL OF NICEA IN 325 AD, NOBODY ON THIS PLANET EVER HEARD OF THE NAMES JESUS CHRIST OR CHRISTIANITY. JESUS/ BIBLE / CHRISTIANTY WAS COOKED UP IN 325 AD, BY JEWESS HELENA , WHO SAT ON THE POPE'S CHAIR.. "Vatican is Evil terrorist satanic organisation." If Satan does exist, then he thrives inside the Roman Catholic Church. The dead sea scrolls covering the period from Birth of Jesus to 68 AD , does NOT say one word about Jesus or his 12 Apostles. Hellenistic philosopher Philo Judaeus of Alexandria (20 BCE-50 AD/CE)-alive at the purported time of Jesus, and one of the wealthiest and best connected citizens of the Empire- makes no mention of Christ, Christians or Christianity in his voluminous writings. Nor do any of the hundreds of other historians and writers who flourished during the first THREE centuries of the common era. The DEAD SEA SCROLLS were all written by Pagan Essenes . None of them have been edited by later Christians, as is the case with some other Jewish literature. All the scrolls (except a treasure map known as the Copper Scroll) can be dated prior to A.D. 68 or 69, when the Qumran settlement was believed to have been destroyed by the Romans in the Jewish revolt. The oldest of the scrolls probably goes back to the middle of the third century B.C. The people of Qumran belonged to a Pagan religious group known as the Essenes. Pliny the Elder, who died during the volcanic destruction of Pompeii in the year 79 A.D., described a community of pagan Essenes living on the western shore of the Dead Sea, close to where Khirbet Qumran is situated. John the Baptist was an ascetic Essene . He was a vegan and was uncircumcised . Various literary sources like Josephus and Philo tell clearly that Essenes were ascetics. We also know, from literary testimony, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the archaeological remains of Qumran, that the Essenes practiced many water baptisms for ritual purification-similar to a dip in the Ganges or the river Pampa or at Thiirunelli. At Qumran, however, all members of the community were baptized with water for ritual purification. Josephus writes, "And as for their piety towards God, it is very extraordinary; for before sunrising they speak not a word about profane matters, but put up certain prayers which they have received from their forefathers, as if they made a supplication for its rising" (Wars, 2.8.5). This testimony accords well with what we know from the Dead Sea Scrolls. Prayer and humility was one thing that the Essenes . When they cooked up stories about Jesus they wrote that Jesus Christ ate the Last Supper in the Essene part of town. Jesus is not historical character, The Dead Sea Scrolls have produced increasing evidence to cement the fact that Jesus Christ never existed and the whole story was cooked up at the First Council of Nicea in 325 AD. The FAKE gospels were written after 325 AD after Jesus was cooked up at the first Council of Nicea.. Twelve apostles of Jesus never existed. Jesus Christ names 12 apostles to spread his gospel, and the early Christian church owes its rapid rise to their missionary zeal. Yet, for most of the Twelve, there's scant evidence of their existence outside of the New Testament. The concept of using statistics to prove that 'God authored the Bible' is bullshit. Why was the library of Alexandria burnt ? The gospel of Thomas was not written by Jesus' disciple Thomas. Englishman Godfrey Higgins studied Greek, Latin and law at Cambridge . His two-volume, 867-page book Anacalypsis: An Enquiry into the Origins of Languages, Nations, and Religions, was published posthumously in 1836. In his treatise, Higgins writes " the mythos of the Jews and the mythos of the Greeks are all at bottom the same lifted from the ancient mythos of Hindus ; and ... are contrivances under the appearance of histories to perpetuate doctrines," and that Christian editors “either from roguery or folly, corrupted them all.” 1900, Scottish MP John Mackinnon Robertson wrote that Jesus never existed but was an FAKE invention by a first-century messianic cult. He wrote about the First Council of Nicea of 325 AD where powerful forces invented a new god to fit the needs of the society of the time .Robertson specifically mentions the Talmudic story of the Yeshu . Thomas says: "Simon Peter said to them, ‘Make Mary leave us, for females don’t deserve life.’ Jesus said, ‘Look, I will guide her to make her male, so that she too may become a living spirit resembling you males. For every female who makes herself male will enter the kingdom of heaven’" (Thomas 114). AIYOOOOO -even Christians don’t like this When the master of James baby Jesus Christ never existed -- how can his disciple St James exist ? Even since the dead sea scrolls have been discovered CHRISTIANS and JEWS are jumping up and down like demented orangutans claiming that Essenes belong to them. Dead Sea text or Qumran Scrolls have absolutely nothing ZILCH, to do with the Bible of the Torah - never mind the diabolical lies of the Christians and the Jews. For arguments sake -even if messiah Jesus Christ existed , the gospels were written a even a century after Jesus' estimated year of death, by individuals who never met Jesus, and then were edited or forged over the centuries by unknown scribes with their own agendas.

Jewish studies have been interesting in a similar way to me, how early history was brought across through a religious lens (I don't mean Old Testament I mean what old scriptures have been found and how Aramaic/old Hebrew has been translated and how some could be inaccurate; mixed in with what has been found in conjunction with archaeological studies of the areas many oral traditions later shaping the Tenach add intriguing info to the whole thing).

This is the Gospel of JESUS CHRIST: Jesus died for our sins, was buried and rose again on the third day. He shed His blood on the cross for you. Your part is to Repent of your sins and Trust in Him. BUT, you MUST trust in the JESUS of the BIBLE!! You must REPENT of your IDOLATRY and must BELIEVE THE TRUE GOSPEL OF JESUS!!! Because, IF you don`t, you will be cast in the LAKE OF FIRE, for ALL ETERNITY!!! Repent of ALL your sins and Trust in the RIGHT Jesus today and God will save you. He will grant you eternal life, not because you earned it, deserve it or because you are a good person, but because He wants to give you eternal life as a FREE GIFT!!! THIS IS THE TRUTH!!! I totally agree with your point at the end that the human-ness of these texts and their origin is what makes them interesting. I love these videos because I genuinely enjoy learning about the early Christian church and how chaotic and wild things were before there was an established orthodoxy or canon list. I’m reminded of how much I enjoyed learning about what my art history teacher termed “the early Christian wolf-whale” which is a real trend in early Christian depictions of Jonah bc as the story travelled it reached groups with no real idea what a “whale” was but with a desire to represent their religious stories in art so they just kinda used context clues to go “okay it lives in the water like a fish but it also ate someone and I know wolves eat people so maybe it was some sort of wolf fish” so a lot of early representations of the Jonah story in Christian tombs give it a wolf’s head and some even give it front paws in a sort of hippocampus/Capricorn/mermaid-esque hybrid. It fascinated me to realize that even the boring bible stories I learned as a child are pieces of ancient culture and literature with their own, individual, /human/ histories.

Thomas Jefferson was an 18th century heretic, in the tradition of Marcion. Jefferson created his Christian Bible "with a knife, instead of a pen", by removing all the supernatural aspects of the Gospels (miracles, virgin birth, resurrection), while preserving Christ's teachings on love and charity. Jefferson sought to preserve the core teachings and parables attributed to Jesus, while removing his status as the Son of God, or one part of a Holy Trinity. The Religious Right likes to gloss over this inconvenient fact, claiming that our country was founded as a "Christian nation", and that the Founding Fathers were all devout Christians. They ignore the fact that many of our founding fathers were merely Deists, and that current Evangelical Christian practices and beliefs, were not popular in the 18th century American colonies. Biblical literalism wasn't even a thing back then.
@spacelinx
@spacelinx 2 жыл бұрын
I partly disagree. You are right in that many of the US founders were deists, though they had sympathies towards a Judeo-Christian worldview, but were just as influenced by classical Greco-Roman philosophy. Modern evangelicalism as we think of it came about towards the middle 1800s, but Biblical literalism and total fundamentalism combined with what could be seen as superstitions were alive and well within the British American colonies. This is what the Puritan movement was about (though its origins predates the mass colonization of British colonial America) and the infamous Salem witch trials were fueled by Christian fundamentalism and superstitions. Even John Wesley who made a missionary trip to the Georgia colony could arguably be considered a Christian fundamentalist in many ways, even amidst his focus on Christian-based support to society such as welfare for children and orphans, and free education and hospitals, an unheard of thing in 17th century England.

@@spacelinx My larger point was that The Founding Fathers didn't, by and large, believe in Biblical literalism. This treaty was signed during the Presidency of George Washington, and ratified by the US Senate during the John Adams administration.

There are certainly similarities. The Gospel of Judas, though, is considered a Gnostic text (Sethian Gnostic, specifically). Marcion probably wasn't Gnostic-leaning but more of a pure Paulinist. All of this is so fascinating. I mean, first you have Semitic peoples who borrowed the idea of their god from other older civilizations' gods, hammering at least two of those gods into one, with a capital G. And then you have Jewish and early Christians trying to fit in a messiah who may or may not be God, who may or may not be the son of this other God, who may or may not be both. Or neither. And then people who wanted to distance themselves from Jewish people and their beliefs, carving out their own religion from all of it. And then the people after that cherry picking what they like from all of that like picking which items you want on a dollar menu, labeling everyone else "heretics" and "pagans". And then you have modern Christians who are basically turning it all into something else entirely (fuck the poor, pro-guns, pro-war, anti-abortion, embracing wealth and wealthy people, etc...) Both fascinating, and wtf.

I think your interpretation of modern Christians "fuck the poor, pro-guns, pro-war, anti-abortion, embracing wealth and wealthy people, etc..." to be EXTREMELY flawed. Do those people exist? Sure but I think you've been conditioned to believe this by what many Christians would deem "liberal sources". Being pro gun doesn't mean being pro murder. I've never met anyone in the "gun nut" community who value guns for anything other than self defense, sport, or hunting. Christians loved Trump because he didn't start any foreign conflicts and made a huge attempt at a peace negotiation in the middle east. Christians are constantly ragging on people like George Soros and Klaus Schawb - the elite, so I'm not sure where the love of wealth and wealthy people comes from. And lastly, if you're against human sacrifice and murder and you view a fetus to be a human person then it's not illogical for a Christian to be anti abortion.

It is interesting to me that, in Revelation 13, it specifically states that the world shall be ruled by the devil - that these things have happened, are happening, and are yet to come. And we all celebrate the Christian World....... Everyone thinks they are the exception to the rule. When it says all shall worship the beast, that means you. It's aslso interesting... after eating the fruit of knowledge, adam and eve were banished from eden. Their son, abel, became a shepherd and ruler. Their other son, cain, became a farmer. When asked to give offerings to god, abel chose to give offerings from his following. Cain chose to give offerings of his crops. God favored the burnt animal sacrifices. One way of interpreting this is that the people outside the immediate tribe were not people. Cain took wives from Nod - but who were they? Abel was a shepherd not just of animals, but of other hominids. The burnt offerings favored by god were other people. And this is why Cain killed Abel. Not out of jealousy, but as a judgment. As man is equal to the god of adam. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXynY2ZjoL-UY7M An interesting side note... the character's theme is "Perdition Crisis" - she is a farmer/carries a scythe, and her stage theme is "Bad Apple." Which has some rather interesting and popular shadow art.

@@makaiawarfield1028 To be fair, I usually use it as a bit of a troll argument to stir the pot or invert the table on someone. The cain and abel story has many parallels with the set/osiris story. There were several versions of it, but the story is that set was the patron god of lower egypt (migrants and farmers) while osiris was the patron god of upper egypt (royals and estates). The two were set to inherit the land from their father and held numerous competitions to settle who would inherit the land. Their father favored Set, but it was Osiris who often won in competitions. Depending on exactly which version. Set eventually killed Osiris, cutting him up and scattering his body. Isis had a conniption fit and put osiris back together well enough to get some necrophilia on and impregnate herself and later give birth to Horus. Set is banned to wander the desert and cursed to spread infertility through the land. ... or so upper egypt wrote. If you are familiar with the SCP Foundation, there are interesting entries for Cain and Abel. I also met someone on the more curious corners of the internet who was very insistent upon the idea that Cain was, in fact, female. One aspect of scholarship that is often overlooked is the in-family passage of information. What parents tell their children or what articles have been kept in private trust. For example, I asked my father what our family name meant. He said "I was always told by my dad and grand father that it meant 'keeper of the land' - but I don't really know." This was probably because my dad knew enough German to realize that the name, in German, literally just means "from graz." However, Graz, when it was Slovenian, was known as Gradec - "the little fort" - which then makes considerably more sense with the original meaning. Our family predates the German/Austrian culture. Or so goes my reading of it. For more established families, who've held estates in countries for over a thousand years... one must wonder what they hold to be true.

What you need to understand is the difference between the Covenant of Law and the Covenant of Grace. Jesus did not come to correct the "evils" of the old rather He came to fulfill the Old Covenant (keeping of the Law) so that He could establish a New Covenant ( Salvation by Grace). The Covenant of the Law served two purposes-one minor and one major. The minor purpose of the Law was to establish a framework for society to function (an earthly temporary purpose) and the major purpose was spiritual to point people of the need of grace as no one can fulfill the Law perfectly. The Bible teaches that if we as people were not sinful the Law would not be necessary. Trying to fulfill the Law will not earn us salvation and to prove this we only have to look to the example of Moses. Moses, whom God chose to deliver the Law, was himself barred from entering the Promised Land as he had sinned in the wilderness (by striking the rock for water instead of obeying God's command). The deep truth that God is showing mankind through the historical example of Moses is that no one can fulfill the Law. Again, this is why Christ came to establish the Covenant of Grace. I encourage you to take the time to do a little more deep thinking when it comes to these matters instead of buying into the false teachings of Gnosticism and people like Bart Ehrman. I recommend you read the book of Galatians and then follow that up with the book of Colossians. The ESV translation is a great Bible translation to use. Here are some verses you can start with if you so choose: Romans chapter 8 verses 3 and 4, Galatians chapter 2 verse 16 and 21, and Galatians chapter 3 verse 13. I wish you the best. Sincerely Matthew N.

So this is sort of why the mormons made a new book and some of what it does is patch up inconsistencies in the bible, like claiming it was God's plan for the serpent to trick adam and eve into eating the apple. Alot of newer churches participate in certain kinds of revisionism, like claiming genesis is a metaphor, or that many outlandish things in the bible are there for the moral of the story, not as historical fact. But i agree, between this and the lost gospel of judas, i think there was a real push that's mostly lost to history around painting the god of the old testament as the bad guy

This is *so* interesting. I remember back in my high school days, I made a dissertation and presentation about satanism: while doing the research, I discovered that *some* brands of it tend to be influenced by the idea, and interpretation, that the God of know Christianity is actually the "bad guy", and the Good Guy God is a different entity altogether. Since I've never been inside of those circles, I of course don't know if the people inside them (and who actually believe and worship) still use names like Lucifer or such, or they have entirely different ways to name what they consider to be the 'good guy'. Still: it is notable to draw parallels between that, and the Marcian doctrines you so eloquently explained in this video. It even somwhat resembles some of the things that are allegedly written in the Book of Judas (and I say allegedly, because it is not something I have read, so I cannot in good conscience use more "assertive" terminology here) so... Yeah. Very interesting.

Drew thank you so much for putting this exhaustive research together!! What I find the most astounding thing about Evangelicals and this idea of the bible being a literal, divine accounting of everything is the divorcing of common sense from that ideology. I find it harder and harder to have real conversations with my family, because they will always float Bible verses into conversation as if Jesus himself said them. In actuality He **may** have said them. Lawyers will often tell you that eyewitness accounts are faulty even days after the event. The fact is, even his closest disciples wrote (or had their ideas written) decades after Jesus was alive. There is no way they would remember verbatim - so it's not what Jesus said exactly no matter how many double quotes you put around it. Anyway - thanks so much for your effort!! If you were giving eye wittiness testimony about a murder that happen 10 years ago, misquoting the victims last words by 2 words and a comma isn't evidence that the murder never happen. These men claim to have known God in the flesh and were willing to die for that claim. That's the point, not a word by word perfect recorded of a conversation 2000 years ago.
@davidallyn1818
@davidallyn1818 2 жыл бұрын
@@sweatt4237 True... but if another person's account of that same event showed the person was acting in self defense, who do you believe?? The determining factor could literally be a single word: "...the gun was pointed down..." or "...the gun was pointed ahead..." - that nuance could make it a murder or self-defense. The point is we are all fallible and can easily get the details wrong - especially from a lens of decades, centuries, or millennia of time to subtly explode or minimize the details over life experience -- that can change the interpretation of the events. And people are willing to die for those beliefs, but it doesn't make them right. For example, there continue to be followers of David Koresh from the Branch Davidian cult that are willing to die for their belief that David Koresh was the messiah. David died in 1993 - FBI accounts are that he was shot, but his believers are waiting for his resurrection. If they were to write David's words in a book and pass their ideas from generation to generation so that it eventually becomes a religion - would it make him the messiah and will he rise again??? Personally, my issue with literalist preachers is they are unwilling to incorporate rationality into their discussions. That is, as congregation we are asked to "have faith", but what is really being asked is "...listen to me not them...". This is following the man - not God. Preachers often stick to their interpretation of The Bible as the word-for-word, authoritative, complete reference of God, and they disregard evidence all around them that may contradict their beliefs in that book. The people that suffer are those that believe blindly in that man standing over them with a bible raised in the air. For example, the Earth is not 6,000 years old because a preacher's version of history is only The Bible. The Earth is vastly older than 6,000, because of millions of published observations across geology, anthropology, chemistry, physics, climate science, and astronomy. Indeed, ice core observations from the Antarctic alone go back at least 100,000 years - God was here then, but The Bible wasn't written yet. For me, God is much much bigger than a single collection of books, The Bible is the beginning - not the end - of our understanding of Him, and the preacher is only a man. God's wonder and inspiration are all around us in the world and universe we live in!!! He shows himself in so many ways that The Bible simply can't attest to, because the writers couldn't understand how those physics and systems work. We've literally taken images of a single atom, and we've literally taken images of galaxies far away. Speaking of... have you seen the latest images from James Webb Telescope?!? - God is there too!! These images that this telescope is going to take will describe Him in incredibly distant and past places in His universe. @@davidallyn1818 I don't think there is room for ambiguity in "Hey that guy was dead, but now he's walking around talking to us." You can't just change 1 word and erase the Resurrection, you would essentially need to remove every book in the NT. Which leaves us with having to deal with that claim. Unlike examples of modern cults where people died because of a promise of some future proof, the disciples died because of a present evidence. You don't have to accept their claim but you do have to accept that they believed it unto death. As a side. I think you have better examples to use than Koresh. Lots of them surrendered, and it would be easy to find people today that would fire back at the Feds if they were trying to shoot into your home with your kids especially in that time after seeing the same exact guy that headshot a mother holding a baby now pointing his rifle at your kids. I think that's more an example of fight or flight rather than cult of personality. God Bless.

I magically thought that if someone tried to change a word that it would magically go back to the correct word that the all powerful God wanted. When I found out that there were many versions of "the Bible" the dissonance started. When I found out that there wasn't "a Christianity" , and we won't even go into that they warred against each other, more dissonance. How could you justify planting car bombs against other "Christians"? Then the church elders lied and said that atheist were the picture of pure evil and I found out that wasn't true, more dissonance. @Joe Gallegos - I have to disagree that "pastors don't have a clue". Dr Ehrman has said that most [formally] trained ministers know of these conflicts within the bible but choose not to tell their followers. I believe there's good reason for this failing on the part of pastors/priests/ministers et al. It would contradict the assertion that the bible is the word of god and thus inerrant, or would diminish the authority of their church. That would hurt the bottom line. Knowwhattamean?

So good for you for attending a church that targets middle to upper class people that have ordained ministers with academic backgrounds. A friend of mine from college is now a pastor and I love hearing his sermons. He presents the historical with the theological. And you're right, some pastors do have the academic background and do not teach from an historical perspective. That doesn't make what I said wrong because when I look at all of the churches around me that target the working class, and there are a lot of them, academia is not at the forefront. They are bastions of emotional support. And I don't deny that even in the churches you attended pastors used to leave out the academia parts. I attended a Catholic Church with a friend once in Beverly hills and the sermon was literally about how the people of the church shouldn't read the Bible and that it should be left up to the priests to interpret it for them. I'm not even kidding. Needless to say I never attended that church again. Hi Drew. 25 years ago I walked away from my faith. (I was 32). I was brought up as a fundamental evangelical in the Christain Missionary Alliance Church in Montana. I taught Biblestudy, led prayer groups, wrote 100s of love poems to Jesus and witnessed to everyone because the idea of people I loved going to hell would terrify me and break my heart. It was after I realized I was kinder than God that I realized I could no longer follow him. I have considered myself agnostic/atheist for over 20 years. (I'm not a lover of labels or absolutes). I couldn't watch or read a lot of atheist contributions through the years because of the anger/hatred and unkindness towards other "misled" human beings. Then my husband found you! Thank you. I appreciate you and respect you immensely. Oh, and the fear of punishment took years to overcome, but today I have peace. Real peace, which Christians think I'm lying about. That's okay though. I was there, in their shoes, so I understand.

Thank you for another informative video. I have a suggestion that so often gets overlooked (we were not always a patriarchy): how female deities, who were once worshiped, were written out of the Bible (i.e. Yahweh's wife Asherah). Also, I would be so interested if you, your wife, or both would either collaborate with Dr. Francesca Stavrakopoulou or do a video or series of videos pertaining to her book "God: An Anatomy." I just find her work fascinating and informative. I know that if I had read her works earlier, my journey towards deconstruction would not have been as excruciatingly painful as it was. Just a bit of background, at age 5, I already had begun questioning my faith. Yet, it was not until my early teen years, that I truly began my journey towards deconstruction, which lasted almost two decades. Being an avid bookworm and a person craving knowledge, as well as a female, I found it difficult to relate to all the men in most of the fields (quite frankly, the little coverage regarding women, in general, and the mysogeny that still exists in science, religion, history, etc., kept triggering my own insecurities), and I continuously added in the God of the Gaps, because I could not just come to terms with just saying, "I don't know."

As far i know, Yahweh's wife, Ashera, is even more mythical than him, since it was created by minories. Ashera was not considered Yahwen's wife by the main doctrine. But it's not like trying do add more gods to their mythical pantheons was something rare in ancient times, but it was controversial, since the jews faith was established in the idea of only one god.

I was first introduced to the 'fable' of Marcion Bible in then the faith I was being raised in. The Nun teaching the history of the book told us that a 'fable' was made up by the Jews to discredit the holly book, and that was the mythical bible of Marcion. With in two years I would began to ask questions that came up from other books I was reading about the religion. I would at thirteen be physical removed from the church and told never come back, I haven't. Fast Forward to my college years and there again came the Marcion Church in history. By this time I had read books that in fact proved I was lied to in my youth by that same religion that tossed me out. Sense I have read more books and come to believe that this truly is the Anti Knowledge religion of all the religions. I continue to learn more, and though I never thought about Marcion as being Gnostic, your information here has made that a better understanding about him. I would like to know if any of the 'bibles of Macion' are in the forbidden archives of the Vatican. Peace

No single person was responsible for assembling the current New Testament canon. Marcion was fully responsible for his own canon, but the NT canon we have today came together over centuries through the collective work of dozens of bishops. Marcion invented the idea of a closed Christian canon, which inspired the current NT to be developed in response.

I've never been a christian myself (I did grow up with christian influences as I had christian grandparents, and my primary school was suposedly christian although that didn't come trough too much), but it is still fascinating to learn about, especially considering the impact and influence it had and still has in the western world.

Great treatment of the topic. I would have pushed one point a little harder; you said that the church's use of various texts was ad-halk prior to Marcion's push for his Canon / bible. The Orthodox push-back could then be called a cultural and value shift within the church. This is a shift towards more legalism and less organic development. While there were conflicts before this, the whole concept of heresy seems to birth most fully in that moment. In that moment the church seems to become excessively focused on who has it wrong, rather than a simple practice of forgiveness and egalitarianism. Anyone who has ever felt condemned by the church has touched something of that moment.

Thank you for this interesting post - a couple of thoughts about Marcion and the Bible you may wish to reflect on that may bring a significant perspective . The early Christians appear to inherited the Jewish Scriptures in something like sort of "Canon" or "Bible" and the reading of scripture was significant in synagogue worship - and of course some Jewish sects like those we know has Essenes, had already added their own writings into their liturgies. (so there is scholarly debate about if the passover meal mentioned in the gospels refers to THE passover meal as practised by Jewish mainstream and the Pharisees or part of an extended series of passover meals as observed by the essenes. The practise of early Christian apostles and missionaries of going first to the synagogues - but often then establishing an independent church based on a breakaway group of Jews and Jewish sympathisers seems to have resulted in a mainstream carrying over of Jewish scripture (probably mainly in the Greek language septuagint and in their liturgical practice. It is is easy for western protestant to miss this and focus only on the scholarly debate between theologians - but while forgetting that for many the development of canon or the Bible was largely a matter of liturgical practice.. It became a habitual part of worship to read some of Paul's letters or an extract from Gospel. And of course in the early days this was supplemented by itinerant Christian "prophets preachers and apostles", which perhaps supplanted the role held by the "pharisees and teachers" of the law There is much about Marcion and his followers (and possible predecessors) that appear to reflect an anti-Jewish (or what in our day we would could anti-semitic) stream in the culture of the Roman empire that has repeatedly emerged in the Western Church since then. Marcion's objection are not just to the tricky bits of the Old Testament - while keeping the more universalist parts consistent with his views - he actually excises everything with Jewish origins ! One perspective on his "canon" which is the essence of Tertullian's critique is that he removes everything with Jewish origins - out with Jewish religion , culture , history , literature , and the all the children of the evil god ! So if you fancy a future video on Marcion - "was maricion's heresy anti-semitism" might be an interesting exploration ? And of course it is so easy for those raised in US protestant evangelicalism to misinterpret early discussions about canon as being what was "the infallible word of God" rather than in the thought categories of the primitive church.

This is super interesting 🧐 I’m orthodox christian myself. I recently heard from my Russian friend (I’m Greek btw) that the Russian and Greek Orthodox Church have split because of the war with Russia and Ukraine. Personally I think that regarding the very specific differences you might find in beliefs, it is difficult for most people to actually know what they believe… but that if, overall people take Christs words that they know to heart and do something positive with them, that is better than nothing… but it’s interesting that the more you dig into Christianity, the more unfolds and the more you learn about what you actually believe. An interesting thing about orthodoxy is that it doesn’t only use scripture for teaching. There are traditions that are also similar to Judaic traditions in the Orthodox Church that have been carried on for over a thousand years… there are also other things, like the holy light we use during Easter (which we call Pascha, that replaces Pasach or Passover for the Jews). The use of icons of saints as inspiration on how to live a holy life, since these people are regarded as holy, even though they are not Christ. We look at trying to fast to teach ourselves discipline and overcome our base instincts to try and become better people… so that we can be “clean” before taking communion every week… we are also supposed to do confession when we feel it is necessary… but for Orthodoxy, Christianity is about trying to become like Christ, not about looking for some heavenly reward or avoiding a punishment, but just to be a better person every day, based on Chris’s teachings…

@@jesuslovesyou2616 Matthew 25 Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA) 34 Then shall the king say to them that shall be on his right hand: Come, ye blessed of my Father, possess you the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in: 36 Naked, and you covered me: sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came to me. 37 Then shall the just answer him, saying: Lord, when did we see thee hungry, and fed thee; thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 And when did we see thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and covered thee? 39 Or when did we see thee sick or in prison, and came to thee? 40 And the king answering, shall say to them: Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me.

We would have a less confused Christianity that's for sure. Would it be better or worse? I really don't know. It's still woo woo over rational thought.

Only 5 minutes in and I utterly agree with Marcian that the Old Testament can just be thrown out with the bathwater.

I love the new side jokes and meta-commentary a la hbomberguy (Sharkboy and Lavagirl, "You called their God an evil tree, what did you expect?"). Keep that up!

Marcion made a brave attempt to sort out the contradictory mess that existed. Of course it was very easy to shut down anyone by calling them a heretic. So in the end they just kept everything no matter how nonsensical . For many centuries it didn't matter too much as very few had or could read the Bible. The main consequence of this today is they have to impose the doctrine of Bible Inerrancy

Should we say this version of Christianity is Paulian? Because he contradicted the teachings of Jesus

I am a member of the ethnoreligious group of Irish Roman Catholics and I enjoy watching your videos. I was wondering how you viewed the Septuagint's role as an authoritative text in early Christianity, even though it's a Hellenistic Jewish text

As an Orthodox Christian I find this fascinating because I know very little about the actual history of this part of the early church. I knew about a few heresies and I also knew about some of the ecumenical councils following the edict of Milan but I had never heard of this guy before. Also, yeah I’m not sure what the guy was expecting by basically accusing God of being evil.

Constantine was NOT a real christian. He was baptized by an Arian elder on his death bed.

Hot Take: Drew is too nice. Yes, before you say it: Being polite and respectful is important, i know. I know that. But i do sometimes feel like he’s not direct enough or even; tbh; ‚sugarcoats things’.
