Last week, a friend asked me to summarize the Reva plot for her, and I realised how stupid her story and poorly written really is. She sees as a youngling how Anakin kills the Younglings and stabs her (but she doesn't die of course). She then decides to go and kill younglings herself to get close to Darth Vader. She then kidnaps a child to lure Kenobi out of hiding to get close to Darth Vader who didn't know Kenobi was alive (and vice versa). She then stabs the Grand Inquisitor (in the special way Darth Vader stabs people without them dying so she had learned something from Anakin). Then Darth Vader meets up with the Grand Inquisitor and then demonstrates how to stab Reva for a second time with a lightsaber (and obviously miss any vital organs again). And a recovered Reva then decides to murder another Youngling again - Luke Skywalker (she mysteriously discovers). Decides not to do it. And then leaves ... My friend couldn't believe that was a 'story'. And indeed your Kenobi perspective shows how dumb the heros were. And the bad guys. It is ridicously writing. Heh. I certainly "killed" plenty of Stormtroopers when playing with action figures back in the day. You're absolutely right about the helmets making them look like faceless drones. There are a lot of stories that cover up the bad guys so we can't see them as individuals. There's a recent Chris Hemsworth movie (Exctraction, 2020) that involves Hemsworth's character fighting pretty much the entire police force of the city of Dhaka in Bangladesh, where the police officers seem to be extremely fond of wearing scarves over their faces. This is done so we don't see their expressions of pain and fear as they get gunned down one after another. (Or maybe so we don't realize the same stunt men are coming back again and again!) But if you're actually in a battle and those guys are trying their best to kill you, there isn't much choice. I don't begrudge Obi-Wan using every advantage he has to win the day and rescue Leia. Maybe he could have mind tricked those Stormtroopers in the chamber - but he might have ended up fighting them again in a corridor or on the flight deck and this time one of them might have landed a lucky shot and ended him for good. When you're by yourself with no backup (other than Tala who had plenty of problems of her own) you can't take chances. As for Darth Vader... Yeah, no excuses for that one. I know Obi-Wan can't actually kill Darth Vader, but he should have _tried._ Then something would happen to save Vader's life and necessitate a quick escape for Kenobi. An interruption to their duel until they finally finish it on the Death Star. And Reva... It does feel like the story expects us to sympathize with her, even though we only saw a few quick scenes of Reva as a child. That's a weird one. I can't really explain what the writer was thinking, except that her story was supposed to mirror Anakin/Darth Vader. As for Obi-Wan forgiving her, I don't think there was much else he could do. He arrived after the fighting was over, and no one was seriously injured. Crucially, Luke was only slightly hurt. And Reva seemed genuinely repentant. (Something he could feel through the Force.) As a Jedi he has to encourage that and try to save her from falling back to the Dark Side. Jedis, even ones on galaxy saving missions, can't kill people if they surrender first, no matter the risk.

I've struggled with this as well and there's no way I can justify it. The only thing I've used in my own head canon is the difference between killing during battle and... execution. This distinction should be significant to the Jedi above all, but does exist in real life without question. Personally, as a former Marine, I have little to no reservations killing an enemy during battle to protect my country, its citizens, my fellow warriors or myself. After that battle has concluded however, there is no chance I would be willing to execute an already defeated enemy who is captured, incapacitated or otherwise defenseless. I would not accept orders to serve as an executioner, let alone do it of my own free will... and this is true despite the fact that I bear no resemblance to something like a monk who has willingly sacrificed their own desires to serve a greater good.

Vader would not have accepted defeat, & even unarmed (unless literally, bwahahaha) he would have continued to fight, & lethally so. I’m watching the show “Justified” and one thing I love about the show is that the “good guy” is always portrayed competently and consistently. He’s not easily fooled and always has a good sense of what’s going on. Yet the show still has plenty of ways to keep the stakes high and interesting.
@BrianHartman2 жыл бұрын
I don't think you're right here. I think both actions were justified. 1) The storm troopers were there to make sure Leia was tortured. There was nothing sympathetic about them, and they were armed. He couldn't afford to use the Jedi mind trick and risk it failing. (We've seen it fail on storm troopers before.) That was an emergency situation. And nothing we've seen in Star Wars hints that a Jedi needs to have any compunction about taking out a storm trooper. 2) Vader was defenseless. Killing him at that point would've been like Anakin killing Dooku. When Windu is going to kill Palpatine, the *one thing* that Anakin said that was right was that it wasn't the Jedi way. And Windu doesn't argue that it *is* the Jedi way. He simply argues that it's necessary.

The droid thing you said in the end was done wonderfully in tcw. because we see how unused to killing people/alien species the jedi are, every time in the show they kill a thinking, living being we usually feel the impact of the action. especially through someone like ahsoka who at this time was a kid who'd likely never imagined she'd do something like it.

In terms of writing, when you compare this show to shows like; “The Offer” or “Reacher”, the quality of story and character development is less engaging. Nah it makes far less sense. Obi wan- just like Yoda- believes Anakin is gone. All that's left is vader. Luke on the other hand believes he can bring him back. That's why its terrible writing. Obi wan heats vaders words, believes his friend is gone but can't kill him because (a) its the typical good guy trope of sparing the beaten villain (b) the story demands he can't be killed of course . Now typically a good guy who spares the villain does so because he can arrest the perpetrator to stand trial and be sentenced but of course the empire is the highest authority in the galaxy. This then can only lead to the decision to kill vader off since he can't face justice lawfully.... In the end all that cN happen is he be let go .....and that simply makes no sense

@@lakersfan2425 I agree with the comment on stormtroopers but it doesn’t bother me much. I agree that Obi-wan in that situation would’ve probably killed Vader but if it was done better I could buy it. Killing a defenseless enemy would definitely make him hesitate even if it was for the greater good and I doubt he was in any sort of peace in the moment. Though that’s idea vs execution. Reva I pretty much disagree with. Yes the events that led her to find Luke was dumb as heck and I still don’t get her motive at that point but I don’t think Obi-wan would even think about killing her. She’s repented she’s pretty much defenseless he wouldn’t kill her. I also disagree about her character arc my interpretation was he was the representation of the line “once you step down the dark path forever will it dominate your destiny.” Where your cause is the only thing that matters but you don’t care how you get there. Exactly! 100% agree with everything. You read my thoughts perfectly. The same thing were/are bothering me too. One major reason, among many, I don't consider this a headcannon for myself, is that Obi Wan won over Vader and had perfect opportunity to destroy him for good, and yet he chose not to for whatever reason(cause he must live through OT). I thought the whole purpose of Jedi is to protect innocent by actually destroying the Sith, not talking to them and leave them bit weakened and forgive them. People behind this nonsensical show made Kenobi directly responsible for countless millions of lives Vader took from the moment he willingly pointlessly left him. Thank you Thor for making this kind of videos and being consistently logical. I love listening to you talk, you not onky have great perfect voice, but also a great perfect mind and thoughts. Also, I think Disney's insistence against using the retconned EU really hurt them. To be honest i can say I did enjoy this show, that was until i remembered about Obi Wan telling Luke he MUST kill Vader in rotj. Why does Obi Wan tell and desperately want Luke to kill Vader when it’s now known he had the chance to kill Vader himself???? It gives a selfish attitude that is not consistent with kenobis character, basically telling Luke , “I wouldn’t have been able to live with killing Vader/anakin but you’ll need to” Big plot hole imo, maybe something that can be explained in a s2. Eg Kenobi now lives with regret for not killing Vader, but I don’t think there’s enough content to show for a s2, and with kenobi being in higher hopes at the end of s1 taking him down another regret arc doesn’t make sense, so will probably remain a big plot hole

That and the fact that Obi-Wan doesn't enforce the death sentence upon Reva. Obi-Wan is an old fashioned knight in the OT. The concept of killing evil people is _clearly_ portrayed as just and wise (even though they also show that mercy and compassion can save the day). I think we just have to accept that Disney is so beholden to progressive secularism that they are incapable of portraying heroes with more traditional views of morality

Again, just more evidence that this whole farce is just fanservice dialled up to 11, when we should have gotten a small-scale, intimate portrait of Obi-Wan as a character which focuses more on his inner struggles and trauma, a cerebral, psychological character study about a tormented man protecting the last hope of the galaxy, which done right would have been very intriguing, probably something like The Revenant(Aka the movie that got Leonardo Dicaprio his first Oscar). And heck, the fact that Obi-Wan and Vader meeting up again TWICE robs their rematch in A New Hope of it’s emotional weight, especially taking into account the lines “a presence I haven’t felt since…”, and “now I am the master”, which basically states that Vader and Obi-Wan never met again after the ending of Revenge of The Sith, it was only until their rematch on the Death Star that they saw each other.

As for the stormtrooper theory, this is why everyone who supported the Finn character, quickly turned against the sequels. Since this good idea to humanize a stormtrooper was flushed down the toilet. The stormtroopers might as well be robots, we never see them be anything but that. Accept Disney still uses them for jokes and kills them being murdered in creative ways????? I hate that.

Obi Wans entire existence at this point is to do whatever he has to protect Luke and Leia. Letting her (and Vader) live completely compromises that single, solitary mission.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely *LOVE* the soundtracks of 1-3, but I also remember how underwhelming and bland much of the cinematography, sets, and dialogue were. It’s so weird to see people notice how bad the sequel trilogy is and think that makes the prequels better retroactively. To be honest, there are only 2 truly great Star Wars films: Star Wars (‘77) and Empire. 2 films that Lucas had the least to do with creatively (aside from world-building). The original cut of Star Wars ‘77 was saved in editing. Empire (arguably the absolute best of them all) was helmed by more competent people. I’m not saying you can’t love the prequels. I’m just trying to hold Star Wars to a higher standard so we can hit those highs from 1977 and 1980 again.

Sure there is still the line before Obi-Wan's death in ANH about the Master but I can live with that inconsistency much more than letting Vader live and walking away. As far as Reva is concerned, as I commented in an earlier video, Obi-Wan dropped Maul with no issue in Rebels Twin Suns once he figured it out. He should have done the same with Reva redeemed or not (still not sure how she is) the risk was too great to let her go on doesn't make sense. The major problem is that this doesn’t translate well with what we know of Old Obi-Wan. He would have Luke kill his own father because he believes he’s completely lost, but he doesn’t kill him himself when he has the chance. Not only that, but Obi-Wan knows what Anakin has done, the evils he’s committed, and still sends his own son to assassinate him rather than do the deed himself. Why spare Vader? The only way the scene could’ve worked for me is if Obi-Wan didn’t know who Vader was until he cut open his helmet and saw/heard Anakin, the shock leaves him stunned and then something happens to separate them and the fight cannot be concluded. Vader doesn’t lose, Obi-Wan doesn’t win, it’s a stalemate that for whatever reason forces Obi-Wan to stay in hiding for the rest of his life.

YES!! Great video! But instead of Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2, Mel should go with "Blazing Saddles 2: The Reva Bait & Switch"... I would pay real money to see that! Alright.. As River Song says in Doctor Who: **SPOILERS (for Star Wars Rebels) ** Time to discuss how I would have done this Kenobi series.. In Star Wars Rebels Season 4, the concept of a World Between Worlds was introduced, it being a plane of existence that transcends time and space. But instead of using this plane to see into the future or try to control it, there is another way to use it that Qui-Gon found: when a Jedi has become one with the Force (through physical death), their spirit can transcend the barrier between the mystic, or spiritual, and the physical, and thus appearing in the future to a pupil, loved one, or former master - someone whom the Jedi had a connection with who is still within the physical realm, and someone who would recognize the Jedi's presence. This plane of existence can only be accessed through the Force. Now Ahsoka used it to escape Vader, but she only dabbled into something that is so much greater. With that said, I would have made Kenobi a 25-episode series. The Pilot would have seen Kenobi checking in on Luke on Tatooine, and we found out how he found his hut and came to be in possession of it, located on the southwestern edge of the Dune Sea, about 136 kilometers from the Lars homestead. Obi-Wan makes a living as the Manager of the Anchorhead branch of Dex's Diner. Dexter Jettster had to move himself and his Diner from Coruscant once the Emperor took over. Once Obi-Wan confided in him about where he was going (the only person in the Galaxy other than Yoda and Senator Organa that knew), Dexter decided to secretly open a branch of his Diner at Anchorhead on Tatooine, where Obi-Wan (Ben) could remotely oversee business operations, have access to a stream of income if he needed it, and be able to keep tabs on the local bar master and cooks' business practices. But he would only occasionally drop in on the establishment, and more often than not, enjoy a Shawda club sandwich or a trademark Photon Fizzle as well. It was here, while in disguise as a patron, where he found out that Anakin was still alive, hunting down Jedi as Darth Vader. The Second episode would begin an arc that would encompass most of the rest of the season. At his hut on Tatooine, Obi-Wan delved into the training that Yoda had for him, that was discovered by his old Master, Qui-Gon Jinn. In this episode, we find out how Qui-Gon used the force to find the World Between Worlds once he passed, and how the Whills granted him knowledge of being able to commune with those who still lived within the physical dimension of time. So, throughout the course of the season, Obi-Wan communicates with Qui-Gon on various occasions, his old Master teaching him how to use this plane of existence for the good of those who are still alive, and how to learn truths about the past (but not change the past) as granted by the Whills. Obi-Wan is able to communicate with Yoda on Dagobah, and thus knows he's on Dagobah. Obi-Wan learns the fate of Mace Windu and many other Jedi, whether alive or dead. Obi-Wan is granted a special access to the Whills - to be within their presence during an episode - and finds out what that is like, and we are given a glimpse of how the Whills affected the turn of galactic events throughout history. We learn of the truth of the prophecy of the Chosen One, and how certain things cannot be revealed to Obi-Wan because he's not ready to receive it, but the chosen one and all of those implications is revealed to Master Yoda. We learn how the Light can be more powerful than the Dark Side, and how the Dark Side became so powerful at the culmination of the Rule of Two, and why the Sith gained control of the Galaxy once more. We see how Obi-Wan comes to peace with what happened through flashbacks with Anakin Skywalker, and Qui-Gon helps to guide him through that pain, Qui-Gon feeling personally responsible to a degree since he was persuaded that Anakin be trained. We see Jedi past, and learn that certain things are veiled to Obi-Wan and Yoda about Luke and Leia. The Bendu are explained in fuller detail in an episode. Obi-Wan is given an assignment by the Whills that he must complete; the Whills assuring him that Luke will be safe. It is a very difficult assignment that he will complete through the World Between Worlds. Once Obi-Wan finishes his assignment, we found out why he is beholden to his own point of view by the time of A New Hope, he speaks in riddles and he hardly can remember his own name - his own identity seems foggy to him by the time his assignment with the Whills is completed and his overall assignment with Luke is just beginning. And it's a wrap. Season Two? Lol.. Well, I suppose Season Two could begin on Alderaan, and we could see how a young girl grew up into a world of galactic political intrigue and how her perception of the galaxy changed with what is shared with her by her adopted parents and view of Alderaanian politics. Taking place solely on Alderaan, we learn how Bail Organa rose to power, and how the people of Alderaan became free of the need for obtaining wealth, having no need for an army or weapons, and how Alderaanian philosophy had an affect on galactic events and policy. We learn how people view Alderaan as they make stops at the Alderaanian space port, and discover the vast beauty of this gorgeous planet! We see how Leia finds her identity and inherits the mantle of leadership from her adopted father, and how she becomes involved with the Rebellion. And that's a wrap.

Actually I don't see an inconsistency in the character of Kenobi here. Those Stormtroopers were armed, so in principal it was a fight with an open end (althugh considering the difference in skill that would have had to be one very lucky shot from one of those stormtroopers) Vader on the other hand was not able to fight anymore at the end of both duels. So killing him would not have been a fair fight, but (from a jedi's perspective) murder. Also we need to consider that most of the series we are watching an Obi Wan who has lost his way. When he kills those stormtroopers he is very far from the jedi he was. So even if one argues that Obi Wan acts inconsistently this is part of a development from the lost jedi at the beginning of the series to the the wise master we saw in "a new hope".

Kind of like how Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad enhance eachother. I would have Obi-Wan NOT learn that Anakin was alive until he slashed Vader's helmet in the "Rematch of the Century". Shocked, confused and mortified, Obi-Wan then gets stabbed in the guy by Vader and thrown off a cliff, Vader thinks he's dead, Qui-Gon appears as a Force Ghost to Obi-Wan and gives some motivational guidance and Obi-Wan leaves to get healed. It's one plot hole I think would've been fixed, in a show apparently riddled with holes.

I don't think Stormtroopers as a whole are evil or necessarily bad people. We forget sometimes that the Empire was more than the side we saw in the movies. They did stop criminals and while we can pretend they didn't do good, they probably fought many battles and small wars where they were in the right. They did maintain the peace in a lot of the inner worlds. Most are probably good people forced into the army or joined to give themselves better lives and protect people they cared about. Like Luke wanted to join the Empire early in the first movie, and if the droids hadn't shown up, might of done it.

The confrontation should have finished with Obi believed to be dead under a pile of rocks, which I thought was happening. Then we wouldn’t have the inconsistencies to follow.

The hits just keep coming. Why is it so hard to write good Star Wars?

The first thing that occurred to me after Obi-Wan let Vader live the second time, is that he is now 100% responsible for the obliteration of Alderaan.

While Kenobi letting Anakin live as a “still defeated padawan in spirit” plays well into the “I was but the learner, now I am the master” line, it probably made more sense in-universe for him to off Vader. (Imagine if Lola recorded the incident and leaked Kenobi granting mercy. That could play out as a very incriminating scandal to people who saw that later...). Anyway, I don’t quite agree that Vader going on being evil lies too heavily on Kenobi. Vader admits that he killed Anakin, not Kenobi. In the same vein, Vader is the evil one, not Kenobi. I totally understand your argument, Thor. And I agree that if it weren’t for the meta-condition of the originals, Kenobi should have killed Vader (Sith Lords are his speciality, right?). But I don’t know to what extent Kenobi really bares the blame for Vader’s continued crimes.

My big problem in trying to write stuff like this, besides the fact that I have to quadruple-check it often since I'm not that clever myself to begin with, is that people in reality rarely make the most sensible or smart decision, and having characters do do on the page always feels a bit unnatural. Yet since a level of competence is evidently required, how do you let your characters make mistakes or have lapses in judgement in a sensible manner?

In the Mace Windu novel Shatterpoint a lot of the questions of ethicality of the Jedi are explained and simplified in a way that makes sense. The Jedi are NOT arbiters of Truth and Morality. As it’s explained in Shatterpoint attempting to be a moral paragon is more likely to drive one to the darkside (and has done so.). When one’s personal idea of morality is self-oriented or similar group oriented specifically and exclusively/primarily decisions are made in the interest of the self and the associated group. The Jedi approach simply chooses an action based on what the best practical solution/outcome for a given scenario is. Kenobi wasn’t saving Leia to save a little girl he was saving a person could potentially eliminate Vader and/or Sidious to improve the Star Wars Galaxy. Obi-Wan couldn’t kill Annakin because he could see that it was Annakin, the same kid he raised, no matter how brainwashed. Who could murder their own son or brother in cold blood?

@dflowers30 It makes Obi-Wan look human. What you and some others wanted...that wasn’t going to happen. The headshot was supposed to be the kill shot. Then Obi-Wan saw Anakin’s face. If the mask was still blocking his face Obi-Wan likely could have killed him. Keep in mind this is the whole reason (humanity) Luke was never told Vader was his father.

The way I see it is the stormtroopers were people he didn’t know plus they were trying to stop him from completing his mission when he cuts them down, while Vader is his old friend and brother Anakin turned dark. Even if Vader killed off Anakin and there wasn’t anything left of him, it’s still the shell of what once was. I don’t think Obi-Wan could finish him off (he says as much in Revenge of the Sith). Is it the best argument? No. But it makes it work enough in my mind as I’ve seen it plenty (the whole killing those who stand in your way) in real life for it to make enough sense.

I think something people seem to overlooking the fact that Vader was not in any way shape or form 100 percent helpless in episode six. Vader had all of his limbs, his lightsaber, and still had command of the force. And Vader had just said “the same way I will destroy you”. Vader’s life support may have been damaged, but that didn’t mean he was helpless. Now I realize Vader is overconfident to a fault, but in that scenario I really think Vader had a way of turning the tables on Obi Wan, and I think Obi Wan realized that. Pus the disturbance in the force Kenobi felt earlier on the fleeing ship was also probably in the back of his mind. Obi Wan made a calculated choice not to go for the kill solely because Vader was far from defenseless at that point. He still had a responsibility to watch ensure Leia got home and to make sure the disturbance he felt didn’t effect Luke.
