Perhaps the most disgraceful event ever in US military history was the My Lai Incident, where hundreds of unarmed civilians lost their lives at the hands of American soldiers. There was at least one American, Hugh Thompson, however, who followed his conscience and, together with his two crew mates, prevented even more casualties in this horrific incident.

that is however easy to say if you have not seen friends die or be maimed in front of you, suffered the hardships of harsh outdoor living whilst getting harsh punishments for any refusal to carry out orders or even for insulting officers. soldiers are the greatest victims of war, they suffer all the worst of it and that needs to finally be recognized and they need to be given priviliged status in return for orderly conduct, not some crumbs thrown their way but litterally freeing them from income taxes for frontline combat soldiers as well as preference for government employment. it is equallity in it's purest form.

William Calley died in April 2024. He was the only soldier convicted for involvement in the massacre. He was sentenced to life imprisonment but his sentence kept on being reduced until he was pardoned after a few years of house arrest. Many people, including politicians and media figures, supported Calley and befriended him. He died at the age of 80. Unfortunately, Hugh Thompson and Lawrence Colburn were treated very poorly. They received death threats, were harassed, and were assigned increasingly dangerous missions. It’s unfortunate Thompson, Andreotta, and Colburn were recognized for their heroism so late, but history will remember them for being true heroes.

It wasn't senseless, many of the men and some of the women in the village were in fact VC, they were the one setting up sharpened pungi sticks and landmine's along the trails the US troops patrolled; how come the villagers were never injured by those traps? they walked those same trails as the GI's did; either they were very lucky or they knew exactly where they were. And after weeks of casualties the US troops began noticing that, and its not hard to conclude who were the one's responsible.

Doesn’t change the fact that this was an atrocity clear and simple. They were unarmed combatants, women and children. Based upon what I have learned, it seems that Ho Chi Minh sent the US president letters requesting for help but was repeatedly ignored, so he turned to communism. The Vietnamese people don't even refer to that war as the Vietnam War, but as the American War.

Thompson was a hero, there is no dispute on that, but he wasn't the reason it was uncovered. The internal investigations he initiated had actually stalled while he was still deployed. Ronald Lee Ridenhour deserves credit for his unrelenting pursuit of this incident. He was just a door gunner for a recon unit unrelated to Calley’s when he heard the rumors about what happened. Out of his own initiative he pursued the story by tracking down everyone who was spreading the story within the army at the time until he found a soldier in the hospital who had his own plans to murder Calley and his squad over what happened. Ridenhour talked him out of it, but he became the first key witness to the crime. Ridenhour was then sent back to the states where he followed up by writing to the president and every congressmen he could with all his evidence. Only one took up the issue, a democrat from Arizona launched a congressional committee and from there it snow balled. Ronald L. Haeberle came out with his photos of the incident and Nixon couldn't cover it up after that. What Thompson did took courage to stand up against such evils, and what Ridenhour did took audacity to seek it out and expose it.

I grew up just 10km from the Mỹ Lai Massacre site, so this tragedy is deeply personal to me. Hugh Thompson’s bravery in exposing the truth shines a light on the brutal reality of what happened to innocent civilians. But Mỹ Lai was just one of many massacres-countless others occurred in places like Mộ Đức(not very far from My Lai) and across Vietnam that remain lesser-known. These hidden atrocities are a painful reminder of the widespread suffering endured by my people, and it’s crucial we never forget.

100 years earlier, Captain Silas Soule and Lieutenant Joseph Cramer did a similar act of heroism. In 1864, the 1st Colorado Cavalry massacred and mutilated nearly 500 Cheyenne and Arapaho non-combatants in the horrific Sand Creek Massacre. Captain Soule and Lieutenant Cramer were witnesses. They not only refused to participate, they kept their men from getting involved, and blew the whistle on it despite threats to their lives. The massacre was so horrific congress got involved, calling the perpetrators "monsters in the shape of men", and multiple groups decried its brutality. They even offered reparations to the natives! Soule testified against his former CO, despite threats to his life. He was murdered nearly six months after the massacre, almost certainly on the orders of that former officer. To this day, the letters Cramer and Soule's letters that blew the whistle are still read by the Arapaho and Cheyenne people every year on the anniversary of the massacre.
