Strictly speaking, you have to keep in mind that the new anime is an adaptation of Arakawa*s manga, and not an original rendition based on the novels. That is the real reason why these particular scenes are portrayed the way they are. That said, the first 2 Arslan movies from the early 1990s hold a special place in my heart, and I could never see that particular hyper-stylized depiction being outmatched today, even though I do not necessarily compare the new depiction unfavorably.
@Marcelosahgo9 жыл бұрын
Vyse Legendaire I like to see it another way. Seeing as how, par for the course of a lot of manga, the anime sticks ever so close to the manga in every aspect (order of scenes and CGI armies notwithstanding), you could say Arakawa is "part" of the "team" adapting the novel into anime -- by proxy, sure, but a part nonetheless. She decides how a certain scene is to be portrayed, which the director of the anime will then reproduce completely or change to their vision; not too differently from how a straight adaptation with multiple directors and writers on board would work. The new anime might be an "adaptation by proxy" of the novel, but is still an adaptation of the novel, covering the same events. Arakawa is participating in the "adaptation" as well. Is it a "fair" comparison? Probably not, but as I said, I don't care about better vs. worse.
@VyseLegendaire9 жыл бұрын
Marcelosahgo The only difference between us is that I dont see the new Arslan as having a multitude of poorly handled scenes.
@Marcelosahgo9 жыл бұрын
Vyse Legendaire I never said that! =O All I said in the video itself was that some scenes ran longer or were too fundamentally different to be compared (and that old Arslan helmet was awesome -- albeit silly). I think the new anime is very competent (I don't even have that much of a problem with the CGI, only when it's too jarring), has great backgrounds, a very fitting, strong soundtrack, good pacing, etc etc. As for the scenes themselves, it has a lot of really great scenes too! I love that shot of Andragoras ordering his army to attack (2:31), it has way more of a punch than the 1991 movie (that was definetly going for more of a "down-to-earth, not overdoing" tone -- which is also great, but for a war scene, I particularly prefer the new anime's more 'shonen-y' take on it). Honestly I have more problems with scripting, though that I couldn't express in video without going on full boring rant mode. And it's not really "problems" as much as they're "I really like the quieter, more subdued tone of the movies over the shonen-in-your-face dialogues of Arakawa; but they're both well done for what they are".
@VyseLegendaire9 жыл бұрын
Marcelosahgo Basically, the way Im looking at is that any direct comparison of the two is bound ot look bad for the new one. Mainly because 1991 was the *good ol days* of anime, and nostalgia will always win out in a question of remakes/re-iterations. I just want to watch the new show on its own terms without trying to make either one look bad in the process. Certainly my feelings about 1991 films will be camouflaged in my first impressions and may not be unbiased, but you also need to take into account the time period, audience, format, and source material which also determine the production decisions. There is just so much unfairness asking the new TV show to be like the old Arslan, even if it would be cool as hell if they tried to emulate the same style. ;)
@raisentou10299 жыл бұрын
+Vyse Legendaire I for one don't have any nostalgia to the 1991 OVA series, because i watched it after watching the 2014 series. I liked the story so much, i decided to take a look at some of it's roots. The OVA in all honesty is not remotely comparable to the 2014 series. Not in Music or sound effects, character or plot development. The 1991 version feels rushed and dry. It fails to pay proper tribute their characters. I honestly didn't feel like Arslan learned anything in the first 2 films. He is literary the same person from minute 10 on the fist film and minute 56 on the second.... (probably cause there is no heroin to challenge and expand Arslan's thinking) We are given a complete product, instead of the young, ignorant and inexperience boy that grows to be a king. This obviously gives depth to the entire world, not clearly stating a right or wrong. Specially when it comes to slavery!!! (which is wrong, but perhaps not too bad in some cases, and could be a decent life style in the setting portrayed) and individuality (all other characters, aside from the main felt empty.... well, even the main characters felt empty overall. "Fate chose me as the crown prince. I don't know why. But i will face my destiny bravely." Quote from OVA 3 from Arslan. I personally find this quote incredibly distasteful, but maybe that was cool those days. By this time on the 2014, Arslan has grown to accept human equality and decided to obtain the throne to follow his ideas, even if he most go against the rightful heir. On the other hand, 1991, does make it a bit harder to hate Hermes. The Princess that is searching for him gives the feeling, there are some good qualities about his character that a decent woman might fall for. Lets be honest, the horn helmets are wack. Final Verdic, 2014 takes the time to span what the 1991 version did in 4 episodes ~ 3 hrs into 25 full episodes ~ 10 hours. After that, 2014 is in the dark

@LuciaMalpense9 жыл бұрын
***** You do realize that in the 1990s animation, the soldiers are literally black shadows with no detail? I'm not sure how 'actually having faces' isn't an improvement to 'repeated looping animation of the same horses' at best and 'black shadows' at worst That's not including the vastly improved background animation (1990s was white background, white background, and oh- look- another white background! Just looking at the amount of detail in 2015 animation shows how much animation has improved in twenty years), better fire and cloud animation, and much better shading. The foreshortening is also terribly awkward at many parts in the 1991 animation- for example, when Daryun pledges loyalty to Arslan. It's much smoother in 2015. And of course, Arslan actually looks like, y'know, a teenager. Which he is.
@AratakiBullPowerSiddo19 жыл бұрын
***** So you are basically calling the 2015 version to have a bad art style ? ... Okay. Let me tell you this very clearly. Your interpretation of what's a good art style and what's a bad art style is very shitty. If you're calling the art style of the present AS adaptation bad , then you're in a way calling the art style of the mangaka of Fullmetal Alchemist bad and you're basically disrespecting her work. You want to know what a bad art style actually is ? One Piece's art style. And I'm talking about the anime not the manga. The characters in the anime are drawn so badly that they don't even qualify as Cartoon. Yes I know the difference between Anime and Cartoon. That's how bad the art style of the One Piece anime is. And you're pretty ignorant if you still think One Piece has better animation and detailing than AS. Even the 90s version has a better animation than any of the movies One Piece has got till now in the present day. And if you were somewhat familiar with animation in general , then you'd know that it takes huge time and effort into giving more than 50 side characters actual different faces and it's a solid waste of time because detailing side characters who won't ever play any importance in the anime , is a huge time waste. Keeping that in mind , somehow still managing to give animation to hundreds of side characters even with similar faces , even though with the use of CGI , is a pretty good feat. And this should be considered even better as seeing this company that animated the re-adaptation had low budget. Just because the 90s art style was good , doesn't means the present day art style can't be good either. For example : Daryun looked more of a middle eastern prince Charming like guy. While in the present one he looks more like an intimidating serious high ranked bodyguard. And that's how a middle eastern bodyguard guarding a young prince should exactly look like. But with those comparisons aside , both the art styles are still gorgeous in their own manners. How about next time , instead of whining and nitpicking over the tiniest things , why won't you show some respect and appreciation for the good quality animation you're getting ? I don't even watch AS , but I'll know good art style and animation when I'll see it.

Let's be accurate and fair here. First of all, the scenes were not from an OVA. Arslan 1 and 2 were theatrical anime. It was 3 through 6 that were OVA. So you are comparing scenes from a high-budget theatrical film with scenes of a TV show production.
@TiagoAMGomes9 жыл бұрын
aohige Budget has got nothing to do with well directed scenes, art style and well created atmosphere. And that's what we're comparing here (or at least I am).
@aohige9 жыл бұрын
***** You are quite naive if you think budget has no effect on direction of animation. With a movie budget, the director has far more freedom to choose how scenes are directed. With a TV budget, angles and presentations, as well as flow of each segment is strongly undermined by limitations. For example, a director can opt to make heavy usage of up-close shots and angle to try and minimize the number of horsemen shown in a shot, as they may not have the man power to depict them all in every scene present. With a film budget, such limitations do not exist, or is far more forgiving. Seriously, if you doubt me, go ask any animators in the field. I'm quite familiar with the industry.
@TiagoAMGomes9 жыл бұрын
aohige If you're familiar with the industry, you probably know about Neon Genesis Evangelion. The series was known for having a very low budget, specially in the later episodes, and still managed to create some of the most memorable annd best directed scenes ever. Yes, a high budget helps, but it doesn't excuse bad directing. Also, the new Arslan Senki seems to have a pretty high budget for an aime series, so I don't see why are some of the scenes so poorly handled when it's obvious that they have the budget for it.
@aohige9 жыл бұрын
What you're asking is equivalent of "why can't every TV show look like Game of Thrones" bub.

aohige I think you're missing my point entirely, because I never said anything like that. What I said is that high budget doesn't equal good directing, and low budget doesn't equal bad directing. Ping Pong the Animation is another good example of what I'm trying to say. If you're a good director, every shot will look interesting and engaging, regardless of the budget you have to work with.

Arakawa's adaption makes Arslan more human from the start and gives him both negative and positive character traits. At least the new Arslan seems more relatable and compassionate and likeable. Just started watching the new version so I found a copy of the old to see how they compared to a complete newbie--not knowing how either compares to the original novel, of course. The 2015 definitely benefits from having way more time to tell its story--developing its themes and improving the pacing, though I prefer the art style of the old one. Characterisation-wise the new version also has more space for development, though I think they've gone overboard with making some of the Luisitainians (sp?) unpalatable, and in my opinion Gieve (sp?) is a lot more likable in the original; brings out more of the 'lovable' in 'lovable rougue'. Elam, on the other hand, is much more preferable in the new version to his original counterpart, and I prefer 2015 Arslan as well--although I liked the old one I think he was kind of bland and more Gary-Stuish. I did love the posh British dub voices in the original though--Narsus especially!

I like the both version. The Arslan from the 1990s version is look more mature than the 2015 Arslan . I still love the both version.
1990's and before that was the golden age, anime back then was unforgettable and had left its mark even in this modern time however the modern ones is just so childish, It's like each year anime eyes gets bigger and getting more oa/cute facial gestures. I'm afraid good quality anime are diminishing now and even Berserk suffered the same cancer.

1991: First of all, the first two were *theatrical features*, which means they had a bigger budget. I agree, the 90's movies and OVAs had a way more fluid animation and had a historical-esque aesthetic which matches perfectly what Arslan Senki is, a historical anime. The music is also amazing and beautifully composed, take for instance the track "The capital is being destroyed by fire"; it has a tragic feeling written all over it which matches perfectly how Ecbatana is falling. Talking about character designs, its the same thing all over again. It has a historical aesthetic and they're all pleasing to the eye. It has soft color schemes, too. Arslan, in my opinion, looks much older and mature in this version. 2013/15/16: This is a TV anime series produced by Linden Films in co. with two different studios (The first season had one studio and Fuujin Ranbu had another). To be fair: The animation is what makes the designs look kinda ugly. It uses desaturated colors all the time, which slowly makes it look kinda bad when they want to put a shining sunny sky (take for instance that scene where Arslan accidentally sees Narsus painting in the morning), it fits perfectly in battle but not in the whole series. Hiromu Arakawa did a good work redesigning some characters (like Elam, Narsus, Shaghad, Jaswant and Rajendra...), and made an incredibly beautiful work stablishing how determined kingdom looks like (specially Sindhura). I like to imagine she made Arslan a delicate moe boy because of his personality: He's sensitive, often insecure, full of questions and weak, also innocent. Maybe she wanted to match these traits with his appearence and this is why he's a cute boy instead of a mature-looking 14-year-old. I bet this rendition of him will look more mature when he becomes an adult. The animation for this version is easily mediocre, specially in Fuujin Ranbu (since episode 5, everything looked uglier), the CGI is horrendous but some landscapes look beautiful. What makes me cry the most is graphic design: Arslan has amazing aesthetics in the "cut for commercials" parts and some merch, but pretty much a great part of the merch has ugly-designed pictures. As a graphic design enthusiast, this kills me. The OST is still amazingly well composed and beautiful; an example of a beautiful song inside of it that's not Tenkuu ni Mau Tori Yo, is Tenchi Raisanka; It has this peaceful anf angelical feeling. In the manga everyone looks more aesthetically pleasing, and has better storytelling than the Linden anime. I do like the art style that Linden Films decided to use for the series, but not the color scheme. But, in all honesty, I like them both. I like to see how Arslan Senki is being adapted in different eras, and I like to see people liking it. Both of them, 90's version and Linden/Arakawa version have their own magic and that's why I accept both of them. Arslan deserves to keep living in animation form and deserves an anime that probably would make Tanaka-sama himself proud (Linden's version is not that one, let me tell ya). Long live to the prince! Yashasin!

Also, to be fair, Arakawa's rendition of Narsus is better in my opinion compared to the 90's design. I'm still wondering why the hell he's blonde instead of black-haired (dark hair fits him very good); but I do love his color scheme (their all pastel yellows, soft blues, whites and pastel-ish browns. The purple of his eyes is an accent that also goes well with the rest of his appearence and breaks the stereotype of "blonde hair baby blue eyes"), I love his sharp and masculine facial features, his body type also makes him look way more mature than the 90's version. He often has this sassy-ish smile when teasing Daryun, which is a plus. Tbh Arakawa's rendition of Narsus is way more attractive physically. Psychologically is a sinnamon troll. xD

SeedNoctis "Kohun Ryuusui", it's the second track from the Original Arslan Senki OST vol 2. Norihiro Tsuru did all the music for the original OAVs and it is some of the best anime music I've ever heard. I'd highly encourage you to get a hold of the soundtracks, I've listened to them for nearly 20 years and they still hold up.

The original definitely has some beautiful animation in parts. But I think I prefer the more modern design simply because it feels more real, it feels like real people rather than a fairy tale. But seeing as it is a fairy tale I could see why others would prefer that more ethereal look.

I just started this series, and its strange to think that this anime is basically a huge part of modern Japanese/Anime culture, the original story was introduced in 1986, then the original anime was in 1991, then the recent reboot and remastered version in 2015.

I think the purpose of the video is solely to compare the animation, not knock either version. However, comparing the animation styles, you can't deny that the 1991 version looks on the surface like it takes itself more seriously, and fits the tone of the story better.

JoestarKisama lol, so much hate on cg. Please try to draw all of soldiers one by one like what animators does. It could take months... Even the 1991 deliberately highlighting only a small portion of soldiers to decrease the work they would had to do

The characters where beautiful on the 90s, the 2015 make them ugly, especially Geive.
@NOMNOM819 жыл бұрын
So sad.. Loved the old character designs. They were based on Amano Yoshitaka's designs from the original manga, and man were they not only beautiful but fit so well with everything. I remember watching the original anime back in the early 90s, and it completely reminded me of Final Fantasy II (original Arslan also made me buy the game Brain Lord, due to Sachiko Kamimura's work on the anime), I always thought of the wild roses theme when watching this lol. Hiromu's style is beyond terrible for this, it looks too damn cartoony, cutesy, and just ridiculous... Disgusting... I hate it. They couldn't get Amano, and Sachiko back? I even loved both the Japanese AND English voice actors. It was one of the few anime at the time that actually had good English voice acting.. Arslan's English voice was so cool, and fit with his design too. I was so disappointed when the original anime series just stopped, and I had hoped they'd redo or continue, got excited when I heard it was being remade.. Disappointed when I saw Hiromu was doing the designs -_-

There's a manga, isn't there? How do each of these scenes compare to the manga? Which is more accurate?
@oddyevil8 жыл бұрын
The 2015 anime is more accurate to the manga, because it's a direct adaptation of said manga. The manga didn't exist when the 1991 films and OVAs came out (as the manga started in around 2013, I believe). The films and OVAs are based on the original light novel series.
@MizukiUkitake8 жыл бұрын
Austin Parish So in short, the 1991 version is more accurate to the original, alright. Thank you. That's what I was looking for.
@oddyevil8 жыл бұрын
MizukiUkitake In a manner of speaking, yeah. I haven't exactly read the original light novels nor watched the 1991 series, but I've heard from some that the 1991 series does skip a lot of stuff that the 2015 anime and manga cover. I haven't heard any reports on the manga nor the 2015 anime being all that different from the original light novel series, aside from the obvious anime aesthetic and somewhat lighter tone.
