Why Did We Sleep on The Heroic Legend of Arslan?

Today we're lookng back an an anime from 2015 which I only got around to watching a few weeks ago: The Heroic Legend of Arslan. Let's try to figure out why this show wasn't as popular as it perhaps should have been, and why it seems largely forgotten 8-years later.

I am very pleased with the story and displeased with the historical accuracy. But even if I write it down as a fantasy story, the battles and sieges are super off, just to mention one: trebuchets weren't used by the defending side...

There is a manga and novel + a 1992 version of the anime. The manga/ second anime diverges from the novel somewhat, but most is the same. Worth noting the author of the novel is the same author of legend of the galactic heroes, so if you like LOTGH it may be worth it to watch/ read the other versions of the story.
