This was written by Australian Robert Drane in 2001, when Kostya Tszyu knocked out Zab Judah. It takes a few justified jabs at the Yanks, who still don't give Kostya the respect he deserves. It describes one of the best "throwaway punch" knockouts we've ever seen: Tszyu’s movements are noticeably quicker now. He seems satisfied that he’s found out all he needs to know. The Straight Ahead Slugger stays just a little outside Judah, steering him around the ring. Already, he has him dodging phantoms. Smart power punchers can do that. Duran did it to Leonard. A devious, hard left hook changes Zab’s demeanour. He darts like a skeet, dodging with exaggerated head and shoulder movement. Slow Hands catches him with a double right and Zab scoots off, shaking his head with overstated disdain. Another right. Judah moves away quicker, but desperation is creeping up on him and it shows in his movements. Tszyu cannot be shaken off, even for a moment. The ring seems to be assuming the dimensions of a bathroom. The Fast-Moving Target backs up, catching a quick right to the cheek. As he wheels around to Kostya’s left, the No-Brain Brawler sees something. He follows Judah, closing the gap quickly. He throws out a left to the left side of Judah’s head. Another phantom. It wasn’t meant to land - just to initiate another of those exaggerated movements, like pushing a child’s to-and-fro toy and waiting for it to come up. Judah backs up and dips to the right, and he’s just lost himself the fight. His reach is 13cm longer than Kostya’s, and he’s two of those arms’ lengths away. Yet, in the time it takes for the toy to come back up, as it inevitably does, the Man With No Footwork traverses that distance with two quick, gliding fencer’s steps and thumps him on the point of the chin with a cruel right, so perfectly executed that full power isn’t required - like waiting with a pin for a balloon to bounce off a wall. Pop! 2 E-Z! The effect is akin to that of a sonic boom going off next to Judah’s ear without warning. He finds himself on his back. If ego wasn’t at issue, he might stay down. But he doesn’t. Instead, he bounces back up as if to try to convince us all that we saw nothing. But his legs refuse to obey. With inebriated pride, he tries to walk, thrusting an impertinent glove at the referee on the way past, mouth moving as though he’s resuming a heated conversation that was interrupted by Kostya’s punch: “You talkin’ to me?” But his eyes aren’t seeing. They roll up in his head, which wobbles woozily. He’s the drunkest man at the party, comically trying to convince his wife to hand over the car keys. His right leg stiffens as though he’s stepped into a pothole. He trips, both legs plait, and the kingdom of Judah falls on its face. The referee, recognising severe concussion, waves it over, grabs his forearms as he half-rises, and prevents him falling once more.

The throwaway back right to close the distance and throw a hard swibel jab or a leaping lead hook has been very very effective for me in sparring. I wanna try the swipe left right now !

Not surprisingly, every clip of somebody getting clipped involves the recipient having a lapse moving their feet or head, in the midst of the punch traffic.

4:30 junk left to right hand I feel like is a staple here in cincy much like the crab /shoulder roll has become in Detroit. Ez used to throw this masterfully but we’d always learn it wasn’t just throwing the shot. It was training the opponent. He would take many rounds to train his opponent to circle with him. If he could get moving left, and get his opponent to throw their left it would set up the sequence. Then you’d pull and throw your left on the counter as a further distraction while you’re both leaning left. bc this is a throwaway you use it to load up the right coming over top. With everything so trained to be focused on your left side, coupled with the fact that they are now throwing their left while circling, your right hand is going to be a blind shot . And if you throw the junk left correctly, it should sting them - atleast touch the right eye but not even really meant to do anything . I’m sure atleast i hope you’ll talk about Ezzard for this one he was the king. Def have a soft spot for it growing up and training here in cincy

Tyson and Patterson also used throwaway punches. Patterson used a throwaway right hook to open up Johansson, I believe it was in their third fight. This was followed by an uppercut that put down Johansson.
