In this Our Changing Climate environmental video essay, I look at the hidden costs and sustainable claims of Apple. Specifically, I look at Apple's efforts to reduce its environmental footprint through solar and wind projects. I also look at the repairability of Macs, iPhones, and iPads in order to figure out whether Apple's sustainability claims are marketing ploys or actual commitments. At the end of the day, Apple's products seem to fuel an increased desire for new and shiny tech, which ultimately leads to more e-waste.

Companies certainly could be doing more but no one is pressuring people to buy their products. I still have the same Macbook pro I bought in 2010 when I started my masters in Architecture and it still runs Autocad and some 3D modeling softwares. And the battery still last around 2h which is spectacular considering it only lasted around 3/4 when I first got it. I never had to pay a single penny for repairs to the computer itself, I just had to buy a new charger in 2015. It is good for us to demand accountability from companies but people also need to take some responsability. We need to stop buying stuff just for the hell of it. Oh and I bought an iphone 4 that same year, it has been 9 years and I am only on my second one. My iphone 4 was lagging and freezing so I replaced it in 2016 for a 7 plus that I still have today and still runs perfectly. Love your videos. Cheers from Portugal

This is not totally fair, in Apple's defense they give you a pretty damn long software support (for example the iPhone 5s, released in 2013 is up to date in software, with the latest iOS), they also use recycled materials (the new MacBook Air is made of recycled aluminum) also they focus on reducing toxic components from their products and they have pretty good recycling programs.

Apple products are known for their longevity snd software upgradability. iPads, iPhones, laptops and Macs can be used for many years if you take care of them. This is one of the main reason for their high second hand price, unlike windows laptops and other phones. This is good if you buy them and keep using them until they give up. However, I do think they should be easily fixable and upgradable (the laptops) because right now apple is trying to glue everything to the motherboard. Another point, all though I don’t like it; that premium price is making a lot of average consumer hold on even more to their devices without upgrading, which is better for the environment.

@SmokeFan2014 if they were planned obsolescence, how did the iphone 5s supported for 6 generations? heck, even the 2015 macbook pro is still widely used. they do both quality and quantity and hook their customers on long lasting services and support for continous stream of revenue. its a win win situation.
@csl2583

@@IrvineIkari The newer iOS updates are only compatible with the iPhone 5s for planned obsolescence. The software updates purposely reduce the speed of the phone to 'save battery life' according to Apple. In reality they are slowing older phones to a crawl just to get a tiny bit extra battery to get consumers to buy a new phone as they don't want their slow phone.

Definitely agree with the sentiment in this video! Every one of us use tech everyday (we must be if we are watching this). I personally am a video editor so require updates to my setup even more so, and out of all the companies providing that tech Apple is at least mostly leading the way environmentally. However as noted, it's a pretty low playing field, so whilst we should celebrate when things are done right, that can't be a free pass - we need to constantly push for more and certainly not be sucked into the false upgrade cycles that are so prolific in the industry. I also like the fact that apple has worked on the ethics of its mineral sourcing and manufacturing - for instance its new MacBook Airs are made from recycled aluminium and 'know the Chain' independently ranked Apple's supply chain a close third out of 40 technology companies in 2018 where Apple scored highest for workers voice and monitoring.

Great video. For me, the iPhone has replaced around 100+ products. For instance, for the past 7 years, the only electrical products in my house are... a MacBook Pro, my iPhone, Apple TV connected to a TV. I stream my films so no nasty DVDs/BluRays/CDs with plastic boxes, distribution, manufacturing etc - no DVD players, radios, satellite boxes etc. Plus my Apple products can be recycled and use top quality long lasting components. I stream from the Apple servers which use 100% renewables and power my house with solar! Doing with the Apple route has been fantastic for me PLUS I have my films & music on my iPhone whenever I travel :) With the iPhone I never need to buy a camera, camcorder, radio, CD player, DVD/BluRay player, satellite box, clock radio, egg timer, sat nav, scanner, watch even!!!!!!!!! It allows me time to enjoy and no stress from these as the software is perfect & reliable. Plus I like Apple's liberal views along with protecting DACA, all nationalities/race etc. To me that's an important part of the 21st century!

Apple is still supporting the iPhone 5s from 2013, which is great! I don‘t think there‘s a single android smartphone from 6 years ago with the latest os. So they are trying to keep their phones alive for longer than any other company. But we have to push Apple on other issues, like the right to repair movement. If sustainability really is important to them, then they should allow third parties to repair their products and even design their phones/tablets/pc etc with repairability in mind. While a glued in battery might shave half a millimeter of a device, I‘d rather have a slightly thicker device with a replaceable battery, screen or what ever. I think that a lot if not most people would subscribe to that idea. As the biggest tech firm we have to push Apple harder on these issues because they lead the way and they could do a lot better. Thanks for the great video.

For the record, for buying a new laptop I'd recommend Framework. You can buy them pre-made or make your own and because it's so customizable and DIY friendly it allows for incremental upgrades and fixes (by yourself or by a repair shop) on specific components and that cuts down on e-waste. It's really worth shining a light on this as an option. I also think it has merit in making DIY fixes seem less daunting to an average consumer, we're smarter and more skilled then we know if given the chance.

I think Apple does some good and some bad. Their tech is supported for longer than their competition - Samsung maybe gives you 2 years of support, Apple more than double that, around 5 so youre getting new features and don't really need to upgrade. And even after that you can rest assured that your device will remain fast and secure, something many competitor devices cannot claim (they get slower, and may be vulnerable). There is a major misconception that Apple has planned obscelesence. In fact I'd argue the opposite. It is the other manufacturers devices that seem to quickly slow down. Furthermore Apple only releases new devices once per year (typically) making it transparent for consumers and easy to buy at the time that suits the person to get the most value. Compared to Samsung, which releases flasgships twice as often as an incentive, Apple gets high marks from me. But enough good, Apple needs to sort out its repair system. They see it as pro consumer so they arent on the line if a customer opens their device and breaks it. But this is not good for the environment or some customers. But maybe there is a little merit I have no figures. Also Apple needs to cut carbon emission from its manufacturing. As you said well just because they are better than the competition doesnt make them perfect. Great video

I really like this channel and I'm an Android user since 2010. However, I believe that people from the media are not fair to Apple. 1) Apple has now a 3-year circle in renewing the main design of the phone while Samsung and Chinese manufacturers are pushing completely new phones every year. 2) they are supporting their phones for 5/6 years compare with 2 years of the competitors. 3) I've a 2011 Macbook that I'm using for work every day (I'm a software engineer) and it's still perfectly usable. I believe Apple is really well placed for years to come compared with other companies. They already understood that we're going to buy far less hardware and the existing one need to last longer. Btw, my next laptop it's going to be a second-hand Macbook. So I agree with the author, if you can, buy second hand.

@Viggen Samsung, OnePlus (phone that I own), Google etc allows you to trad id phones that are 6/12 months old. Regarding the laptop, after 5 years, most of the third-party components (CPU, GPU, scree, speakers etc) are not in production anymore. This is why the PC can't be serviced.

Two more points about Apple and their wasteful techniques: The fact that if you have a 'faulty' logic board (something as small as a blown fuse or capacitor) they will replace the whole thing. That they have deliberately slowed down phones' performance to encourage people to upgrade. (Thanks for covering Apple! They are a big concern in the tech repair community!)
@springbok4015
@springbok4015 4 жыл бұрын
At least their iMac lineup is user accessible and repairable. But yes, it’s a problem for sure. Regarding the slowed down phones: they do this when the battery drops below a certain health, this extends battery life and potentially reduces fire risks. Generally the batteries in Apple products are of decent quality, so this mostly happens on phones 5+ years old.

@@springbok4015 They could've definitely be more upfront about it. While yes, they actually slow down the phone to make sure the battery lasts longer and the phone is more sustainable, in that process they saw a profit opportunity and wasn't upfront to their consumers why the phone is slowed down over time. This "forced" consumers to think they need to upgrade sooner instead of just paying for a battery replacement.
@atonomical8489
@atonomical8489 4 жыл бұрын
@@springbok4015 hallo, I would have replied a little earlier but I wasn't notified. First of all, unless you have a souldering iron and a good microscope, imacs are very hard to repair, especially as Apple now superglue the displays down, which is the only area to access the logic board from. (apart from the ram slots but that's only for upgrading ram.) Secondly, the whole slowing down of phones. Apple do this to force people to upgrade their to newer models. An iPhone only consumes a few Watts and this saving power by slowing the phone down wouldn't affect battery life too much. Plus I've never seen a (2011 onwards) apple battery last much longer than 2 1/2 years before drastically decreasing in health. That is just from my experience and people complaining in my life, but I've heard people online complaining frequently. Another fun fact about batteries is if one were to replace an apple battery with an apple battery in the iPhone x line, it reads always as very bad health even if the battery is new. Large repair centres can purchase some kind of appliance that authorises the battery as new and healthy, but you have to buy if from apple. If you'd like to be convinced a little more then I'd recommend watching some of Louis Rossman and ipadrehabs' videos on this subject. They're great people and I've learnt how to repair a lot from them. I wouldn't recommend going on apple forums to protest about batteries and bending iPhones etc because you will be banned. (they also have videos about that!) Have a nice day and stay safe! :D

Just a different perspective probably, but, Apple is greener than some of the other tech firms out in the market. Blatantly blaming Apple for creating the problems for upgrades is rather void considering literally every company releases new upgrades on a yearly basis. As far as stocking of old tech in concerned, it again is not Apple's fault, its just how our consumer market is shaped. That said, Apple is working year-in/out just to move towards a more eco-friendly future which is far more than what some other tech companies even intend to do. As a matter of fact I would argue Apple is probably the only tech firm providing workable updates for devices even after 5-years of release, for the consumers not wanting a device upgrade, which is definitely more than the updates (roughly 2-3 years of patches and updates) provided by some other companies. This might be just my point of view, and I am definitely gonna be blasted for it because I'll surely be called an "Apple Sheep", but you can't deny the facts.

We have an E-Waste collection day at my facility and I see some of my coworkers throwing away perfectly good but out dated iphones and ipads. Instead of trashing this and having a third party haul it off to a recycling plant, I refurbish it and salvage what I can by either using it for myself, giving it to someone I know may need it, or just selling it back to the apple store. Another man's trash is another man's treasure! It's just to sad to see perfectly good items be discarded

The leasing/payment plans that American carriers (as well as Apple) have pushed since T-Mobile started the trend around 2014 might be the most significant contributer to the e-waste turnover. Apple now charges $1000 to actually buy their phones, which is completely inaccessible for 90% of Americans. So instead they and carriers rent them for an extra $30/month on top of the cell bill, plus required insurance of $10/month, but you never actually own the device. Some carriers, like T-Mobile, even push you to upgrade every THIRTY GODDAMN DAYS. I bought my 6S used and unlocked in 2016 for $200, it's still super fast, I've replaced the battery once for $30. No problem with it. If I had instead gone with the program every sales team is pitching, I could've gone through 42 different cellphones in that time, and spent an extra $2,000 while coming away with owning zero of the devices.

The processors are not as big of an issue as the battery, I would say. Lithium-ion batteries WILL degrade over time just due to how they work. My S9+ after nearly two years of use, according to AccuBattery, the battery life has been reduced by 25% from the original 3600 mAh battery claim. We either need bigger batteries to begin with to offset this loss as much as possible, or at least make them more easily swappable on the user-level. The Fairphone is unfortunately the exception, not the norm as all the major flagship manufacturers are. Apple is notorious for being especially egregious towards users wanting to provide their own maintenance on phones. Repairing the rear back glass on say an iPhone X or iPhone 11 will cost up to $500-600 according to Apple (because they put all the hardware right onto the back), the price of what could be essentially a new mid-tier Android phone or a year-old Android flagship. This is undoubtedly to persuade the user to just buy a new Apple phone rather than going through with the repair. Meanwhile a replacement Samsung flagship back glass panel costs roughly......$20. I'm not defending Android, they have their own issues too. But there's a reason why Apple recently became the world's first trillion dollar company, and it's not because they're being consumer friendly.

To be fair to Apple it is doing something, which will hopefully evolve. Their products do last and my recent purchase was principally made out of recycled materials. Contrast a Chromebook which I purchased in 2012, which died on me within 2 years outside warranty (never again). No doubt things need to improve, but it is not all awful. We could do with changing our consumer habits - buying less. Some of the fault sits with us!

What would you guys think if companies like apple switch to a rental / service based model? Pay a fixed monthly price and apple will keep your device up-to-date / replacing it when needed. This means apple remains responsible for the hardware and would have an economical incentive to take care of it & recycle parts. For customers it probably gets more expensive overall though but at least you don't need to gamble on an expensive device anymore that might break randomly after the warranty runs out.

Recent data also shows the stagnant growth in phone sales. That contradicts some of this video’s narrative of exponential waste. As people hold on to phones longer, demand decreases, production volume decreases, and waste growth slows. I thought that’s what the unsustainably factor of this video was going to be about.
