Even the Pune state board failed to tell us much about Goan inquisition. I remember a sentence in history text book which said, its the northern regions and Maharashtra which partook in freedom struggle. Not much contribution was seen from southern regions. But i know, this is not true. Even in Karnataka, there were many who were involved. Only, what i feel is deliberately the distortians hid the contributions from southern regions

Interesting! It is true that the Portuguese conquests with their religious fanaticism did harm the cultural and religious fabric of this land. However history is never black and white! It is right that we should know about the persecution our ancestors suffered for their religious beliefs. However I have a few questions to the Prachyam team and Ms. Shefali...are we to react and persecute the present day Christians of Goa and the entire konkan coast for the crimes of the portuguese? I have many Catholic friends and have been with their families. In my observations they have been very rooted in their traditions and love for the Konkani language, the only difference is that they worship in the churches. Besides in my reading of the goan inquisition history from various sources...the people who were mostly in the inquisition trial were the converts to Christianity (who were mostly forcefully converted!) partly because the neo-converts were accused of keeping their traditional cultural practices (eg. roce ceremony, using of betal leaves for ceremonies..etc

that also explains why thousands of goan converts to Christianity left goa in 17th and 18th centuries to the coastal towns of Karnataka. We need to take care of the narratives we set when we speak of history...does this narrative make us vent our anger or hatred towards present day Christians esp those of Konkan coast who have already suffered along with their Hindu brethren the wrath of the Portuguese fanatics.? My take is that an enquiry into the past should make us enlightened that we do not end up hating our own people ...neither can we retaliate with modern day Portugal which almost nothing in the present day scenario of global politics. Let us not repeat the history of hate ..because our ancestors too were victims of hate. Sincere enquiry of history should lead us to build peace, and rebuild and upkeep our traditions and culture...and not subjugate or belittle people...Remember hate and revenge is an endless vicious cycle....only a sincere and profound growth in spirituality can help us conquer these...

However as a Hindu living in a foreign country I have often come across a number of our youngsters who have violent reactions to events of the past. Especially through hate comments, name calling etc. This kind of outburst of reactions don't help...the comment I expressed was in that regard. We are a great, noble and an ancient culture, and now we have significant presence in the international level. This calls for us to reflect and react and not imitate the mad frenzy of the ancient invaders! Our focus should not be mere narrations of the past, but focus of reshaping our glorious heritage for the future.

The British couldn’t get their heads round the fact that Sanatana Dharma had so many paths for Bhakti and Practice of Dharma. The British didn’t understand Sanatana Dharma nor did they try too. Before the Brits arrived sanatana dharma had no caste divisions as classified by the British. It was all about divide and rule.The word caste is derived from the Portuguese word Casta.
