Dr. Gad Barnea is not your typical Bible scholar-he’s reshaping how we view ancient Judaism and the Hebrew Bible, tackling one of its core assumptions: that Moses and his story are older than the 4th century BCE. As a Lecturer in Jewish History and Biblical Studies at the University of Haifa and a Research Fellow at the École biblique et archéologique Française, Dr. Barnea focuses on Yahwism under the “Iranian Age of Empires,” exploring how Persian rule and Zoroastrianism likely shaped early Judaism, suggesting the Moses narrative may have emerged far later than commonly thought.
Beyond texts, Barnea has uncovered a groundbreaking ostracon from Elephantine, the earliest known Jewish curse text, and evidence of a Jewish priestess-a revelation about ancient Jewish rituals. He’s also restored a Qumran scroll (4Q550) containing a forgotten Achaemenid court tale, set to release with Brill, and co-edits a book on “Yahwism under the Achaemenid Empire.”
With years of tech experience, Barnea is also advancing Digital Humanities, making biblical studies accessible and transforming how we understand figures like Moses in light of hellenistic influences.overing a history that reshapes our understanding of the Bible and Moses himself.

For me, this discussion with Gad Barnea is one of the more interesting videos you've created. His perspective on Yahwism, as a diverse phenomenon that includes other forms of Yahweh worship that we don't appreciate from reading just the Bible or Josephus, helps us to understand the amazing richness and complexity of religious and philosophical thought during that era.

Yes, but it is a two way street. Your German ancestors from the 20th Century that got swept up in the "WW2 National Socialist" movement were REACTING to prejudice and oppression from the very Judaic residents they later targeted. Prejudice or racism is always REACTIONARY at its core. No child on Earth is born with "inherited racism" but rather it is developed via REACTING to an external source (of a collective people or organization) causing harm or an oppressive environment. Don't hate your genes nor your heritage, but rather understand your ancestors were REACTING to decades of harm and an oppressive environment thrust upon them. Research "Edom" and "Esau" as it relates to European Caucasians. There is an ancient "source" to why these racist and prejudiced REACTIONS keep occurring in an endless spiral of REACTIONARY violence. Take care.

@@amuthi1The premise of your argument is extremely broad. The word Pagan is a vague term. You could be considered "pagan" for simply not recognizing a formal religion or worshiping more than one god. Throughout history there are many instances of pagans using religion to justify war. All you have to do is look at the Roman Empire. They use their religion as a justification for imperialism by way of waging war. Look at the Roman religious ritual evocatio. "Essentially, a Roman general or magistrate would ask the patron deity of a foreign city to defect from its current home to enjoy a superior quality of worship at Rome. This was typically carried out before the Romans began a siege of a hostile city and if the city then fell then this was interpreted as the god expressing its approval to be moved to Rome. This transference was both spiritual and physical as any surviving statues of the deity found in the besieged city would be moved to Rome. "

If YHWH is a myth evolved in Alexandria and other places over centuries of time... what exactly does the word "Jewish" mean???

@dennythedavinchi3832 16 күн бұрын
The deity actually existed before 4 th century B.C. Most popular theory is Egyptian mentioned on a script called Yahweh of Shasu(nowaday Jordan region). I personally thought Yahweh came from the deity Yam cause associated with Rotan and Leviathan. Like Yam- yamu-yahu pronunciation changes over time but I can't prove it.
@andrewsuryali8540
@andrewsuryali8540 15 күн бұрын
Well, YHWH predates Alexandria by at least a millennium. What Gad is saying is that the current mythology we NOW have of him (meaning the Bible) was heavily influenced by things happening in Alexandria. To him and Jonatan Adler (and actually the majority of Israeli historians) "Jewish" technically means the culture and the people that abide by the general norms and ideas of what is now considered "Judaism". He further defines "Judaism" as the cultural milieu surrounding YHWH-worship with the various commandments and rules contained in the Torah. It should be noted that Gad is also of the opinion that this definition is more reliant on the Torah than on the rest of the Tanakh because there are books in the Tanakh that not all branches of "Judaism" agree on and there are books that many did agree on that aren't in the Tanakh. While he doesn't state this outright, Gad thinks the Septuagint was originally more authoritative for the majority of Jews than the Masoretic, so the deletion of the Apocrypha/Deuterocanon is actually a sectarian reduction.

@ ... so a "Jew" is one who worships YHWH... right?
@andrewsuryali8540
@andrewsuryali8540 15 күн бұрын
@ Well, no. A "Jew" in the modern Israeli scholarly technical view is one who worships YHWH in accordance with the laws of the Torah. This definition automatically precludes the Elephantine Judaeans, the Persian-era denizens of Jerusalem, Ezra, Nehemiah, the people exiled to Babylon, all the prophets, all the kings, priests, and people of Judah and Israel, the non-Judaean Iao worshippers in Egypt, Gaul, Spain, and other regions of the Roman Empire, the gnostics (who Gad thinks started as an offshoot of Yahwism before they became Christians), and of course all of Christianity who technically still worship YHWH. Those are all Yahwists but not "Jews".

@andrewsuryali8540
@andrewsuryali8540 16 күн бұрын
No, he is talking about Ariston of Chios, the master of Erastothenes, the first librarian of the Library of Alexandria. Ariston was a stoic philosopher who developed the critical mode of thinking and evaluation of ideas that Erastothenes later used to, for example, calculate the circumference of the Earth.
@willmosse3684
@willmosse3684 15 күн бұрын
@@andrewsuryali8540I don’t think he is talking about Ariston of Chios, because he said the idea of a city like Alexandria was created by Aristo and his student Theofrastus. According to a quick google, Theofrastus was a student of Aristotle, who took over Aristotle’s Lyceum after Aristotle died. He also said Aristo never got to see it realised, never actually got to see Alexandria. It wouldn’t make sense to say that of someone who was a librarian of the Library of Alexandria. It also makes sense that he is talking about Aristotle because Aristotle was the teacher of Alexander the Great, and Alexandria was constructed on orders from Alexander. So, I think the Dr is talking about Aristotle. All this said, the fact that there are these different possibilities only demonstrates further that it would be useful to clarify exactly who he is talking about using the standard English terminology. My guess is that “Aristo” is what they call Aristotle in modern Hebrew in Israel, but I could be wrong about that.
@andrewsuryali8540
@andrewsuryali8540 15 күн бұрын
@willmosse3684 I think you're misunderstanding the relationships. He isn't saying Theofrastus was a student of Ariston, but that the Library came about from the visions of the two men, and that BOTH never got to see their visions come to fruition. That's because the Library was founded on the works of the two men's students. Demetrius of Phalerum, the student of Theofrastus, was the founder of the Library (or in any case the guy who convinced Ptolemy to build it), while Erastothenes the student of Ariston was its first librarian. The idea of critical evaluation of texts mentioned has to do with Ariston's approach that Erastothenes implemented. Aristotle was more into writing new stuff and "grounding" Plato.
@willmosse3684
@willmosse3684 15 күн бұрын
@@andrewsuryali8540 Okay, fair enough. Well, it would be beneficial if they explained who this person actually was, rather than just saying Aristo as if we all know who that is. Could it be that the prohibition on uttering the name of (god) arises from the multitude of Caananite gods that were originally independent but over time became in effect interchangeable (El, Ywh, Baal, etc) and the prohibition was in effect an effort to get all separate cults to merge into a single one under the influence of a single priestly caste? Kinda like prohiting us from saying Toyota, Ford, or Volkswagen and insisting that from this point on we can only say “Car”.

That was how the Greeks actually syncretized this deity when they encountered him in their dealings with the Phoenicians. The idea that Enki was cognate with Poseidon is a modern idea based on the findings of modern Assyriologists because we now know Enki was god of the waters under the earth in the original Sumerian myth. However, the Greeks of the Classical and Hellenistic era didn't know this. They knew nothing of the Sumerian myths outside of some remnant divine names. Stopping a few minutes in - something just popped out at me I felt compelled to mention to Derek. This is totally coming from a place of a friend who wants you to have the utmost success so please take it constructively ❤ - Derek you look like you’re wearing your pajamas. This is strictly about channel presentation and branding. Your guest is looking sharp and has come to talk real academic research and you look like you just got out of bed. You’ve heard the saying “dress for the job you want”, right? It may seem pedantic but my background is in video and film production and I’ve spent a long time studying how every part of the “shot” is perceived. How to craft a shot to tell a story and the story you’re telling is you don’t respect your guest, audience or topic enough to put on a jacket. Forgive me if that’s harsh but a true friend tells when you have spinach in your teeth before you talk to the cutie at the bar. I know how passionate you are about this work so I’m not questioning your intention. It’s just food for thought. You are talking about serious historical and archeological research and you want your audience or “new” audience to trust your presentation so you have to as the presenter not look like the guy podcasting in his basement. People are funny and will have biases for things they didn’t even realize. It’s not a typical thing most podcasters or YT’Rs think of when they don’t have a production background but you need a wardrobe department. The wife is usually a good place to start 😂. Since you have multiple types of videos you do, IE - interviews, responses , podcasts with Neal, I’d recommend setting some rules and style for each type of video. Not all have to be formal but for interviews with scholars I’d say go a bit more professorial. Set some rules for types of clothes to wear for each type but in none of them should you wear sweat pants. 😮…😂😂. That’s my two cents for now. You don’t have to take it of course but I do hope it’s something you consider for a moment 😁🤙

This guy Derek ..and Neil...they really need...hey do this. Write a book. Now do not attack "religion" but instead attack "literalism" and then show the majesty of the Abrahamic faiths in a new way. Show how they synthesize and "grow" as human understanding does and are still doing today. Show the transition of many different gods and how humanity is moving more toward "the most high" whom is universal and how "a guy" represents him to humanity. Show how the "gods" become more and more perfect until "a guy" whom represents perfection teaches the "universal faith". do that....what a great book imo. Peace.

Ishtar or Astart. And all triads and Trinity represent duality and time and reality. You ave a yin and you have a yang. You also have the whole yin yang that's the realitive third in the Trinity while the third part is its own thing in a triad. The first is like the sum of two numbers added together and the third part would be both the numbers but it would still be those numbers where is the other example the Triad is like having a child and the mother and father are the creators of the child they built the child but the child is not them that's an absolute. Hey dude, if you knew a thing or two, instead of confessing the listeners with your self hate, you would have told them that EVEN the word “Palestine” is a Hebrew word, from the Hebrew bible! Coming from the word “palash” (פלש) - which means “to invade”. It came from the Israelites in the Hebrew Bible calling a nation that invaded the biblical Israel with the name “Plishtim“ (they basically called them “the invaders“) Only when the Romans conquered that same land again from the Jews, they renamed the land Palestina to mock the Jews by renaming their land on their biblical enemy’s name. Palestina is the Latin word for the Bible name “Plishtim“. And then you keep on going to talk about Islamophobia… Of course you did! What else can a lefty self hating Jew could possibly do when he’s in front of an audience??? Definitely not talk about antisemitism for example! Pathetic! In general, great topic but I’ll go learn our history from someone else, less biased!

One of those tribes descend from Judah from which Jews get their name. Separately, in the Kingdom of Judah, there were multiple tribe descendants living there, not just those of Judah, when the Kingdom of Israel was destroyed. So why is Gad mixing all these things together

The One True Creator G_d gave specific details to the Hebrew prophets about when the Real Messiach comes. No One! Especially the so-called "Jesus" has fulfilled any of them yet! 1. When the Real Messiach comes, he will be a normal man from the line of David through Solomon and will sit on the throne of David and rule from there forever. *Obviously, that hasn't happened yet! 2. When the Real Messiach comes, it will be at the End of Days. * Obviously, back then was not the End of Days! 3. When the Real Messiach comes, the Temple will be rebuilt never to be destroyed again, and The Messiach will start the animal sacrifices in the Temple again. * The opposite happened back then! The very fact that the Temple isn't standing proves that the so-called "Jesus" is Not The Messiach! 4. When the Real Messiach comes, Everyone around the world (including atheist) will know that he is The Messiach! * We KNOW that the so-called "Jesus" is Not The Messiach! 5. When the Real Messiach comes, death will cease to exist. * Obviously, that hasn't happened yet either because so many people are still getting sick and dying. 6. When the Real Messiach comes, there will be World Peace and weapons of war will be rebuilt into farming implements. * We're still waiting for that one!!! 7. When the Real Messiach comes, Everyone around the world, from every language, will grab the Jews and say "Now we know that we have inherited only lies and G_d has been with you Jews all along. Please 🙏 take us with you!" * We're still waiting for that one, too!!! No where in the Torah/Tanach does it ever say that the Messiach will keep failing and have to come back again and again. According to Christianity, the so-called "Jesus" already came back a second time, but he still never fulfilled any of those Prophecies about the Real Messiach. So now Christians are waiting for a third coming. Christianity strikes out again!

First Nations know that the One True Creator G_d wrote the Torah before Creation. The One True Creator G_d encoded the Torah/Tanach, The Hebrew letters, and the Hebrew language, so there is much hidden in the plain sight. Hebrew is the Sacred language, and the Torah is the Book of Life and the Blueprint of Creation. The 613 Mitzvahs are only for the Jews. Before that, there are the 7 Noahide Laws. They are rules for everyone. Christianity and English keep mistranslating so much, and then they totally misunderstand what they mistranslated and corrupted.

Yaweh is the god of his chosen people. But not the previously unknown God of love, grace and forgiveness, Jesus came to tell us about and be the model for us to follow for. Jesus himself said to judge a tree by its fruit. Use that litmus to compare and contrast yaweh to what Jesus taught in the first bible, the testamentum-1 gospel (Paul's gospel of the Lord), with his original 7-10 epistles, not the pastorals, and not the "acts". Pure Christianity for the gentile's was to be instructed by Paul and Barnabas. Simon(Peter) & James were to minister to the circumcision, the Jews.

Archeological finds may confirm that there were historically true facts embedded in the text of Hebrew scripture. But it does not prove that the Hebrew religion's claims of supernatural events are true. It's like claiming that because modern superhero fiction includes facts about real US cities that Superman can fly or Spiderman can shoot spiderwebs. Your comment shows a shallowness of thought that explains why you believe in supernatural religion.

@ Matter and energy cannot be created nor destroyed, therefore no matter nor energy would’ve existed to do the causing. Consequently, whatever did cause the universe to exist, would need to be immaterial and exist beyond time and space! Genesis 1: 1 God creates time space and matter! The KILLER is, Entropy! Entropy is somewhat opposite of evolution and why did this come into the universe if everything’s getting better? Genesis 2:17 says death came into the universe through the first sin! First two chapters of the Bible not the 500th chapter or the thousandth chapter; explain what evolutionists have not explained; and no other worldview EXPLAINS ENTROPY -The 2nd LAW AT ALL, let alone the first law of thermodynamics! So the Bible explains how matter, space, time, entropy, and energy get here; Right out the gate! DNA does not auto encrypt, it did not write itself the code writer is outside of the code. 3300 billion lines of computer code in 1 humans DNA genome, would fill the Grand Canyon 50 times of Books, let alone plant and animal DNA and it did not write itself! One person‘s DNA could stretch to the sun and back 61 times! Psalm 139:16 “in my members you have written many books“. John 21:25 “I suppose everything Jesus did the world will not have enough room for the Books, telling of it“! God made matter and energy, a.k.a., the first law of thermodynamics and DNA, pointing to himself; pointing to an outside source beyond the realm of the universe; that these things were made there! Job 38:35 “were you there when I created the lightnings and they say ‘here we are!”’ This is God talking to Job! 3300 years later, James Maxwell discovers that light rays and electricity are two forms of the same thing! The Bible Predicted telecommunications Biologist Edwin Conklin said the probability of life originating by accident is comparable to a dictionary resulting from an explosion in a printing shop. That reduces the chance of the theory of evolution being true. But the terrible thing about evolution is that it rejects the word of God. It’s a godless propaganda. Imagine the progression of this type of thinking reducing the value of human life. Look where we are today. You’re thinking that a human fetus is nothing but a clump of cells. How deluded this society has become! But you see my friend humans are created in God’s image. And God has a special purpose for every human ever born. Even the babies that will die their silent screams are noticed by God. And those babies have left an imprint in my heart and in the hearts of those of us out here.
