Uncle believes that the Shadowkhan are Chinese because of Chinese assassins that exported what would become ninjitsu to Japan centuries later. Apparently its why the Lin Kuei gets all pissy when they are called ninjas. There seems to be a book called China's ninja connection that explains this. Which gives evidence about this group. Which is also called the Lin Kuei. So basically its an incredibly obscure piece of Chinese history.

@@aliastheabnormal I did some research on the Lin Kuei, but I couldn’t find much conclusive information that this is what inspired ninjas, I’ve even read other sources that say the Lin kuei were ninjas that moved to China. That being said, this was the conclusion I came to for why uncle would believe the ninjas are still Chinese in origin

It's hilarious to realize everything that made Shendu dangerous was stolen, aside from possibly the dragon zodiac power. It also explains why it was so relatively easy for Jade to usurp control of the Shadowkhan earlier in the show.

I think they do a good job of showing this when shendu meets back with his siblings and they just beat him up and insult him, he comes off more like a con artist which is pretty funny

I like that even after they retired Shendu as the antagonist, he's still connected to EVERYTHING that happens afterward. They're still dealing with the fallout of his defeat three season later. I also liked the weird running theme in the season about Jade's place on the team. It was fitting that she ultimately got the final blow.

You know, another meaningful thing about El Tora taking his mask off for Paco is, while he never removes his mask, it was forcibly removed in season 1. By the Shadowkhan. And now he removes it of his own volition to save Paco from the Oni and Shadowkhan. Just a small thing that may have been unintentional, but I still like it.

I forgot they actually removed it in season 1. Yeah this definitely is a lot more powerful of a scene because of the intent and what paco means to him, and i don’t think it was my favorite episode of the season, but I think by a significant margin it was the best written episode

For sure, the talismans are so iconic, but the masks are probably my favorite power of the show just because the characters are affected so much more

I also like what it does to Toru and Uncle's relationship as the masks being Japanese makes Toru more knowledgeable and causes Uncle to feel useless. However Toru supports Uncle by showing that Uncle still has alot to teach Toru showing the situation isn't a student surpassing the teacher, but rather the student standing on equal footing to the teacher and both working to elevate each other. Which just a lovely wholesome mature message.

Rewatching this season on the Throwback Toons youtube channel, I honestly thought it was one of the most fun seasons to watch through. It was great seeing Toru growing into his own. And seeing a less powerful set of Mcguffins helps make a balance in the cast.

One thing to note about this season is how Tarakudo is pretty chill and nice to The Dark Hand. Hands down the best boss they've ever had. If he wasn't an evil Oni bent on ruling the world, one might consider hanging out with them.

@@Colby2D what I think adds to this is that Tarakudo needed the Dark hand and even in failure he didn’t punish them. Shendu was trapped in stone and Valmont. So he had to rely on on the Dark hand for talisman retrieval and handling the Pan’ku Box. Even without the finale revealing that the heroes played into his “hands” Tarakudo needed the bodies to have power. Tarakudo also encouraged anyone with a mask so he could have a puppet.

It sort of makes sense. His power is delegated between all these different Oni Generals whilst the Shadowkhan he personally controls are the most basic, so it makes sense that his strength lies in management and interpersonal relationships.

I've been really enjoying how the "power levels" increase in this show more than I remember. They slowly bring together different concepts throughout to deal with stronger and stronger opponents by being more and more tactical and learn to combine the different elements to face foes they cant flat out beat.

You missed the point with the hak fu episode, it focused on the shadow kahns so much because that was the running gag through the season that hak fu was longing for his own mask and his own army of shadown kahns... yet when he finally gets them they turn out to be these lil Chihuahua like smol cute monsters... or should i say Chi - huahuas. What Hak Fu dismissed as useless kahns turned out to be the most fearsome until now, and even growing bigger than the sumo kahns and potentially having unlimited power.

That’s a really good point. I think it was a good decision for the episode to make, because hak foo already overpowers Jackie more often than not in seasons 3 and 4, there’s not much of an angle to push that further with hak foo getting a mask, unless they call in the j team and just 5 v 1 him lol

A funny thing about Uncle's struggles to learn Japanese is that his voice actor is actually Japanese himself. Regarding the season itself, it was a lot better than I thought it would be, when I first watched it. And you can see them laying the foundation for Season 5, by wrapping up a lot of loose ends in this season (while setting up new characters). My only real complaint is that the finale felt rushed. The ninth mask and ninth Shadowkhan didn't get much exposure, and Tarakudo's true form hardly gets any screentime. If I couldn't put in another episode, I'd at least replace the Chang episode. Also I love how Valmont degrades over the course of the series.

Awesome, another Jackie Chan Adventures video! I remember the auction episode and just found it absolutely hilarious. I also loved that they designed so many versions of Shadowkhan. It does seem like a missed opportunity to not have an episode with Tarakudo getting Jade on his side for an episode despite referencing back to her being the Queen of the Shadowkhan. Maybe they planned it but it was scrapped for whatever reason.

Count me amongst those for whom season 4 is their favorite, and I would argue the best based on consistency alone. I appreciated the fact that they actually took time to address "Hey, we have both Japanese and Chinese mythical elements in the main plotlines of our show; let's explain why that is.", rather than just lumping it all into an "East Asian Mythology" and leave it at that. Granted, that's the minimum one would expect these days, but it's the early 2000's when this show was first airing. That's pretty outside the norm for the time. I also appreciate the fact that we technically got foreshadowing for this TWO SEASONS PRIOR with the "Queen of the Shadowkhan" episode with Jade. That was always one of the episodes I remembered best growing up, but I thought for sure it was a one-off. To see it come back, and play into the main plot of the season, was amazing! I'm not sure if production had it planned back when they made the episode, or just realized how they could use it when they were planning season 4, but either way, kudos to them for a good tie-in! It's either an amazing example of forward planning, or managing to naturally retcon an earlier event to make an entire story. Tarakudo as a villain also really stood out to me compared to the likes of Shendu, Daolon Wong, or the villain we'll see in season 5. Not that I dislike any of those villains, but Tarakudo always seemed more chill than them, and frankly nicer to the Dark Hand in general, which helped make him distinct. His wit, as you demonstrated, was pretty good as well. Seeing a villain who was more of a corrupter than a mastermind made him stand out. And above all, I love it when the villain wins no matter what, and Tarakudo is arguably the only villain in the show who had a foolproof plan. He/the Dark Hand get the masks? They can cover the world in darkness themselves. Chan and the gang get the masks? The generals resurrect, and they cover the world in darkness. Either way, Tarakudo wins. As an aside, my head-canon is that Tarakudo got the Dark Hand down from that branch they were trapped on. Realized his minions had been gone for a while, psychically located them, then came and telekinesis-ed them back. Speaking of the masks, they are probably my favorite item to collect for the show. They just presented a lot of creative opportunities for the storylines. Apart from just the design perspective of the different tribes of Shadowkhan, the fact that the mask kind of blends with the personality of the person it's worn by, while slowly corrupting them, was great fodder for stories, and they went some interesting places with it. Yeah, we got your standard "Dark Hand member wears the mask" storyline, but seeing how it affected the likes of Captain Black? Paco? Scruffy? Didn't see that coming, but it was a really creative idea, and led to some great drama. Plus, it's fun to see how even the "evil" characters interact with the mask. I still laugh at the fact that once Ratso gets the hang of summoning his Shadowkhan (speaks to Ratso's character that he has a noticeably harder time with it than the other "evil" characters), all he wants to do with them is play baseball, and has to be nudged into fighting Jackie and the gang by Tarakudo. If the season has a flaw, it's the finale. Not that it's bad; everything that happens in it is fine, but I wish they'd had the episodes/budget for a two-parter. Everything happens so fast, it lacks the epic feel this season really deserved. Still, overall, fantastic season that does a lot of things a lot smarter than it really needed to, and got very creative compared to other shows, or even seasons of its own show. Totally agree on the consistency, I would say it’s the most consistent season, and depending on the day is probably my favorite season too. I think if I were to show a friend a season besides one, we’d have a slightly more fun time with 3, but 3 is much less consistent than 4

It also feels like a more wholly original plot than the others. Season 3 was a redo of the talisman hunt from season one. And season 5 was a redo of season 2. Albeit both with slight twists and still fun execution.

For the final episode about the oni breaking free from their masks, it was also stated in the first episode of the season, where the mural states that when all the masks are together, darkness will cover the world. So that was a massive oversight for the crew, and it showed that Tarakudo really was a smart dude. Even when he lost one of the mask, he would still get what he wanted in the end

I like how after s2 they flesh out filler episodes into seasons. Like Dowlonwan was just a one off filler villain and this whole season is a reference to that temporary tattoo episode. Given enough time I’m sure we’d get hopping vampire season if the show kept going on.

30:21 This is true about northern and southern styles. Also Northern uses a lot of jumping techniques, jumping as a way to switch stances and jump kicks. While southern is more about footwork transitions. In the movie "Ip Man" the differences can be seen when Donnie Yen(Ip Man) fights the Northerner.

Scruffy transforming while wearing the Oni Mask was likely a reference to the Jim Carrey movie "The Mask." Oddly enough, the mask in that movie does something similar to the masks in this season. Maybe that partially inspired the whole thing.

About the uncle thing, never heard of uncle being used to refer to other men but I know grandpa is used to refer to the elderly, specifically grandpa on the fathers side (Yie Yie) as there’s a different word for grandpa on mothers side (Gong Gong) At the same time apparently uncle is used to refer to male family friends in Chinese as well similar to Japanese but that’s something I learned recently so not exactly sure

You question the Rock/paper/scissors dynamic. How does paper actually beat rock? It makes no sense... Ever since I was a child, I always thought it should be Rock/dynamite/scissors. Dynamite (represented by thumbs up, the thumb being the fuse, the hand being the dynamite stick) blows up rock, but has the fuse cut by scissors... That would make sense.

Technically Oni being translated to Demon is more to do with it being as close of a translation as possible. In truth Oni occupy roles in Japanese folklore of demigods, Demons, monsters, and judges of the dead. They are believed to be something of a Japanese Import of the Indian Rakasaka which themselves occupy a similarly broad role in Hinduism and Buddhism.

@Colby2D because the role they occupy in Japanese Buddhism is the same as the Rakasaka occupy in Indian. Being those who punish the wicked in the various hells. The thing not noticed is that a lot of Japanese gods and Bodastavias do have Indian deities as origins. Which is due to Buddhism recontextualizing the Indian God's with some of them being Buddhas themselves and getting exported alongside Buddhism.

There’s also ayakashi which are closer to evil spirits than simple demons. Those ones as depicted in Noragami are basically monsters created from dreams & negativity. They whisper evil or suicidal thoughts in the living’s ears and consume the ghosts of the dead to turn them into one of them, like A Nightmare on Elm Street meets the Flood from Halo. Sweden have similar monsters called Kamalas which are the exact same thing but are exclusively shadow monsters like the Shadowkhan. Those were popularised by a Swedish horror game called Fran Bow. Ayakashi also appeared as the monsters in Bungie’s FPS RPG Pathways into Darkness as creations of an entire species of Azathoth like elder gods called W’rkncacnter, partially inspiring the Flood later. Marathon Eternal, based on a scrapped Halo draft even had ayakashi standing in for the Flood in episode 5 but later builds replaced them with with unique Kamala counterparts which somehow ended up being scarier.

"Samurai" also is just another term for warrior. They probably could have used anyone's hair, but since Toru is Japanese, it makes the most sense for his. Especially since this season has a heavy focus on respecting these cultures.

I had already seen Ash leaving his friends behind as he traveled to new regions or Meilin from Cardcaptor Sakura going back to China mid season 2, so it wouldn't have surprised me if Jade was suddenly sent back to her parents. it felt so nice to see that we would not be losing her (I never found her to be annoying, always enjoyed her character a lot).

2nd Favorite season of JCA for me. It partially comes down to the macguffins the Chans are searching for and how fresh they feel to the show. Individual episode quality is also a factor, but all of the seasons have their high and low ones. I'd rank them like this: 1) Season 2 2) Season 4 3) Season 1 4) Season 3 5) Season 5

The Uncle thing isn't that odd. If Uncle is the brother of Jackie's and his brother's father, and Jackie's brother has a daughter, then they're great-uncle, uncle, niece. Unless her parents call Jackie "uncle" too, which would mess things up.

Jackie is Jade's dad's cousin. Uncle is Jackie's uncle, which makes Jade's granduncle. Thus, three of them bear the same surname. Uncle is referred to as Uncle by Jade for simplicity's sake. Jade is Jackie's first cousin once removed. It's much more specific in the Chinese language.

I see Agent Black as a true neutral person. After all, despite being one of the good guys, he did have his men pretty much kidnap Jackie back in episode 1 of season 1. And at the time, he was working to take down the Dark Hand. So he and his men may have used some underhanded tactics to undermine Valmont's criminal empire. Which makes his Ying and Yang both being neutral. With the Ying side being corrupted by the power of the Oni Mask before its removed.

This really is a fantastic season (my favorite alongside 1 and 2) Tohru got extra focus, incorporating a different country's mythology, the new villain treating the Enforcers nicely was a funny change, felt like it built on previous show lore (finally explained WHY a Chinese demon dragon had Japanese ninja minions lol)...just overall a great season. Kinda wish Tohru's mom showed up and wish Tohru played a more active part in Tarrakudo's defeat...but honestly pretty solid.

I think it happened to her last season too, but I never thought of the fact it only transforms Jade. My assumption would be because they’re already adults it wouldn’t change their muscles or structure much, and making Jade buff is a pretty funny and easily recognizable gag

Again going back to my comment on recommending the fanfic J-WITCH. Just a slight little spoiler here, it mostly combines elements from Seasons 3 and 4 of Jackie Chan Adventures and what’s presented here is just as if not more engaging than in the canon JCA show. Plus in regards to Jade, she surprisingly gets a certain amount of development in the fanfic, and that includes her interactions with the W.I.T.C.H girls. I can’t give you all the details, but I will say this, as good as she is in the canon show, this fanfic made her a lot more interesting in my opinion. Also if you want to check out W.I.T.C.H, the first two seasons are available on KZbin for free.

Season 4 has always been my favorite for this show. The different types of shadowkhan was a more interesting power system than Shenlong's talismans. The corrupting influence of the masks gave a negative side to using the power. It expanded the world, which was nice after 3 seasons of "Shenlong can't be allowed to get his powers back." It was a good callback to a one off story. And it hinted at more adventures to come thanks to the new villains and the time travel episode.

Fun fact: 1:42 this tradition sounds *eeerily* similar to an old tradition in Europe that is occasionally still a thing. Just replace the Namahage with Krampus & St. Nicholas (the former looks for naughty children while the latter seeks to warn them and tell them to be good) and its more or less the same thing. Which is both a FASCINATING and kind of freaky coincidence xD

35:24 I think Medarot (medabots in the west) has this exact problem. Wonder why they did that? In Medarot's case, the episode swere broadcasted in a seemingly random order so everything feels weird and disconnected. The episodes leading to finding the "rival" robot are sometime after they've already interacted eith him I believe. Then there's a tournament, then some more random stuff.

I honestly didn’t think I watched season 4, but I actually did after you refreshed my memory lol. Although, this season isn’t very memorable to me, which makes it not my favorite season. I would say my favorite episode from this season is the one when Hak Foo gets a mask. I like how Uncle gets humbled, and I like how Hak Foo’s ninjas are little cute guys lol. Oh, and how his first attack with the mask is called “Demon Compensates for Inferior Ninja Army” hahaha. As for season 5, I doubt I watched it, but you might jog my memory lol.

The Grim Pumpkin scene feels more like a Peanuts scene to me. With all of the different ideas the show had, the weirdest one was Adult Jade Chan. Also, I never did like Chronicles.

The Oni Masks were my favorite addition to the series, unlike the talismans that can be taken from you the masks can only be removed by a specific spell for each one. If I had one and saw someone with the power to take it off, I would order my Shadowkhan to teleport me out of there. Depending on the mask, like the one Jade and Valmont wear, the special ingredient can be so rare that another potion would be near impossible to get. I would win the war via attrition, then use my ninjas to become a vigilante and take out corruption, if only the Oni spirit didn't try to corrupt you to be basic one dimensional evil.

I'd definitely want to be a Plesiosaurus. I don't have any good reasons for it except that I like the thought of being a marine dinosaur and there's a fossil of a plesiosaurus giving birth where I study. That's one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

I stopped watching JCA at S4E1 because something else was on in the same timeslot on a different channel that I wanted to watch more, but for YEARS my brain was stuck on the whole Tarakudo seeing Jade and calling her the queen of the ShadowKhan thing. Like... was dying to know how THAT concluded and it wasn't until I was in college and was watching Gargoyles at 4:00am with JCA on right after that I was able to finally watch all of season 4 and... was so frigging bummed that in reality that scene went NOWHERE DX
