I have to tell people all the time; CS is a mathematics degree, not an IT degree. Most tier 1 schools you will be doing some hands on, but its a lot of theory. I know a guy who went to a state school where the classes were taught in computer labs and was very hands on. It was much different than my experience, though we had computer labs too- just not integrated with the lecture and discussion experience. In retrospect I think a lot of people I went to school with would have probably developed more in the state program, than having the ability to put some "prestige" on a resume.

If you are someone that is expecting a safe career with a 9 to 5 schedule, then technology is not for you. You have to constantly upskill, work on personal projects, contribute to the tech community, conferences, meetups, online seminars, study for certifications. Just like any other industry, there is ageism, layoffs, outsourcing etc... but as long as you keep learning, you will have opportunities. I have been a self thought web developer for 10 years. I started working in Virtual Reality apps on my own time for the past 3 years. Soon I will start a new tech career in that emerging field.

CS major. Shane is accurate regarding the CS coursework. Not much practical application in the curriculum like you'd probably find in a Software Engineering degree. 2 programming courses, Data Structures and Algorithms, and 2 CS electives which may have real world usefulness depending on what you pick, then the rest is math and computational theory. But, every company's HR recruiter doesn't know the difference between the two, so Computer Science is always the degree listed along with "or related degree". I don't regret choosing CS but I can't deny that I probably would have chose SE if those programs were more common or as revered as CS.

I'm going for CIS and I see a lot of overlap in the job market. Some things in particular are the required degree for pretty much any IS or IT job. Most of these skills you learn in college are base line and can set you up to take nearly any route in the tech industry, once you have any one of the degrees mentioned in the video. I would argue you can apply for 80% of jobs and be competitive. Cheers, keep posting these they are interesting.

Don't forget that PLENTY of Electrical Engineers become Software Engineers. By no means do the majority of EE's only work on hardware. Throughout my two internships in Software Engineering (as an Aerospace Eng. Major myself), the majority of "Software Engineers" that I encountered actually went to school for Electrical Engineering (not Computer Science). While this clearly wasn't the intent, it's misleading to state that the EE major is only for people interested in hardware. It's a very versatile, if not the most versatile degree.

@achyuththouta69573 жыл бұрын
@@Tururu134 CS is saturated only for those with no skills. Let me break this to you. Programming in computer science cannot be taught. Period. It's a fact. If you're just learning what college teaches you and thinking that it's the same level of programming that industry requires , you're wrong. It's something that you learn yourself and it's highly demanding in nature. What people think is that the degree offered by the University would be more than enough and it's enough if they study what the college teaches them. These people might still get jobs but they won't be solving problems nor will they do actual computer science jobs. So this particular field is saturating. But the actual computer science which consists of skilled individuals who solve problems everyday with their problem solving skills is booming and has very little supply for the demand. Especially Artificial intelligence , data science and fields like that are in very high demand and there are hardly any skilled individuals. It would take 5000-6000 hours of practicing computer programming to become an employable tech professional with actual skills. Even if you go to a not so recognised college but if your top coder and GitHub profiles are very good you can get a high paying job. There's no other career path which offers this luxury.

Do you think that interdisciplinary science and computer science degrees are worth it? For instance, bioinformatics, cheminformatics, etc. Are they too niche ?
@dtae78554 жыл бұрын
Not bad, but I think there are better options. The job market of bioinformatics is a bit harder to navigate if you don’t have connections & in a lot of cases, you need a master's or Ph.D. for positions, although some labs will hire those freshly graduated with a bachelors depending on the need/ experience. To get the best bang for your buck, I’d suggest getting a CS degree (or something similar) & take bioinformatics electives instead of majoring in bioinformatics solely bc that’d give you way more options upon graduation & you’ll gain more practical knowledge with working with code & data. Unfortunately, I can’t speak on cheminformatics.

@@ShaneHummus Here's my thinking, now that you've indulged me. These degrees with "management" in them are a bit of a witch's brew according to their curriculum. The main ingredients of these concoctions or constituent disciplines are added in different proportions to arrive at each degree. Off the top of my head and based on brief but intensive reseach on >online< MS programs, the constituent disciplines are as follows: 1. Business (Finance, Marketing, Accounting, Economics) 2. Management (approaches, tools & techniques applied to processes) 3. Analytics for Decision-making (primarily Statistics) 4. Operations (Supply Chain, Production, Manufacture, QC/QA) 5. Technology (Hardware & Software and their deployment) Each degree is the result of different combinations of the five disciplines above. Personally I am interested in degrees heavy on 2, 3 and 4 above. Something to consider when choosing one of these MS degrees with a heavy business focus is the probability that you may have to compete for jobs with MBA grads who have a technical background. What do you think?

Can you become a Computer and Information Manager with a MIS or CIS degree?
@Atomic-Blast-2 жыл бұрын
Hey, a month late but here's my thinking. In short: Probably yes In long: here are my thoughts I am currently an MIS student, first year and nearing finals. Took two courses regarding computers, and I will be tackling the pure computer courses in the following two years. I have been practicing on my programming skills, and am just a beginner, having fun with HTML and CSS and mastering the knowledge I have of them, while beginning to learn some JS. What i discovered throughout this year, from various experiences, is that you cannot land a certain job, especially a manager, and an information or systems manager at that, via the degree alone. Once recruiters see that you have acquired a degree in a technical, computer related field, they'll know that: 1- You are disciplined and are ready to work under stress. 2- You have acquired technical skills that allow you to work on projects. 3- You most likely would accept the job offer, especially if you have no experience and this is the first job offer. That's in order to pay off college debts, and they know that, though that's a flexible thinking. As I have always been told when researching throughout this year, a degree alone might get you the interview, however your skills will get you the job. You got to work on your skills in order to get that job that you aspire or dream of. Looking at myself, I plan to work in web development as a first job. If I only rely on my degree, I will learn the course during the 3rd year, first semester, alongside other courses. Stress is high, I've got lots of other courses to attend to, lots of studying to do... I just won't be able to focus too much on the Web Development course (HTML, CSS, JS). The result of that would directly translate into the job interview, they will see that I really couldn't focus too much on that course and able to do those projects and all that work they'll thrown on me. Thus, it's a lose situation, for me. After all that long ass reply, and I apologize for this I didn't want to write that much xD, I just want to tell the following: 1- Research that job you dream of. 2- See what skills and which programming languages (if any) you need to know in order to work in it.. 3- Start practicing !! You will get experience and knowledge while practicing it, you will have time in order to further enhance and refine your skills, and you'll really know and understand if this work is for you or not. So, if you, get that degree, it will help you by introducing you to computer related courses alongside others, and it will most probably get you that interview and maybe even help you in getting a job. You will get to know what this job consists of, what skills are required in order to thrive in it, and such. However, if you either cannot afford to get that degree, or basically have another plan in your head, practice and refine the required skills for that job. You don't really need a degree in order to get a job, it's just way harder and really requires you to be brave, tough, knowledgeable, and straight up smart.

@@Atomic-Blast- Thanks for the reply. Do you think it's wise to go ahead and get your Master's degree if the market/economy is bad? Especially if you want to do management later on?
@Atomic-Blast-2 жыл бұрын
@@JPE_DRAEB in order to get a management position straight after graduation, yes maybe it would be wise to do so. However, in the long run, I'd say experience is more valuable then getting a master's. If you work for an organised company, and have what it takes to become a manager, they would promote you to that position, through skills, hard-work, leadership, etc...
