He could've regretted what he said the next day, but refused to apologize out of stubbornness, and as time went on it could be he never contacted them out of guilt. Ok points you missed. Granny didn't want to talk about the feud because it brought up memories of her son and daughter in law who she missed dearly. Grandpear took so long to reconnect because he held onto the grudge for so long. But with his life coming near to the end he doesn't want to die with regrets so he returned to rectify his mistakes. And no one said anything about their parents because no one asked. Applejack and Big Mac had memories of their parents compared to Apple Bloom who was too young to really remember them. And it would be rude to just shove yourself into the family business especially about parents that passed away not too long ago (Apple Bloom is again still young, don't know exact age but it is presumed they passed withing that time frame). If someone comes up to me and tell me they knew my mum not long after her death, I'd be pretty upset as it will just makr me mourn about her again. It took a long time for me to even srop crying all the time i talk about my deceased nan or cat. Yet i still find myself crying over them if I'm not careful enough. If no one of familial relations has told anything to the Apples, then they have no right to get involved. It was only when Golden Delicious did that the Apple siblings went around asking stories. Like, my mum barely told me about her life before me until i asked. And boy did she have a lot to talk about.

I think with grand pear the thing is that when he did regret his actions and wanted to go back it was much like the other ponies in town not telling the apple siblings about their parents. You'd be surprised on how silent my family is about my mother. It's been 15 years since she died from sickness and at the time, it was just too painful to bring her up. And she had a friends from childhood that I only met later in life, never when she was alive, for all I remember. As Ms Cake said, it's never easy to talk about that kind of stuff, it depends on how far you are in your grief. And the more you postpone it, that guiltier you get, and the harder it becomes. It's actually so heartbreaking to realize than Gran Pear will never be able to make amend to his daughter, but he'll had Granny to share memories with. I just love how the series makes you understand their parents are dead while never actually say it out loud. What probably get me the most in Bright Mac asking to come back for more stories, and Burned Oak agreeing with tears in his eyes. A wonderful episode with a beautiful song that often make me cry.

Family names in MLP work a little weird. Sometimes they work just like a regular surname. The Pie family, the Cake family, etc. Sometimes when the parents get married they change their name, but don't pass down a family name. Like Spoiled Rich and Filthy Rich, but their daughter is named Diamond Tiara. And it's not always the last name that gets passed down. Like Twilight Psarkle and her mom Twilight Velvet (but Shining Armor doesn't take any part of their parents' names) And of course the Apple family mostly just revolves around the THEME of apples, but don't necessarily pass down an actual family name. Though Bright Mac does pass down into Big Mac, but Macintosh is also just a kind of apple so 🤷♂️ That's why I kind of think that Pinkie IS actually related to the Apples even though they couldn't find solid evidence in-universe. I imagine at some point there was a pony named Apple Pie, who then passed down the name Pie instead of apple. But that's just my silly theory.
@runic_raptor5 ай бұрын
So TLDR: ponies don't ALWAYS pass down a family name, and the family name isn't always the last name. Ponies are weird. Since we don't know the Shy parents names, it's possible one of them had Zephyr or Breeze in their name, or it could be a totally new name they invented

I love how to this day "The Perfect Pear" is considered to be one of the greatest episodes of the FIM series! It was so awesome that we finally got to see what the Apple siblings parents were like before their off screen deaths, In fact Bright Mac and Pear Butter instantly became two of my all time favorite season 7 characters! Just as "You're In My Head Like A Catchy Song" song instantly became one of my all time favorite season 7 songs, I can't help but cry a little every time I listen to it. It's just that damn wholesome and romantic! It was also interesting that the writers decided to give the episode a bit of a Romeo and Juliet type of twist to it. But I remember a lot of people in the fandom not liking it back in the day and on some level I could see why, Hell I certainly hated it when Grand Pear disowned Pear Butter all because of a stupid and petty fued. And by the time he decided to patch things up with Pear Butter it was too late, But even though Grand Pear was too late to patch things up with his daughter. At least he met his grandchildren and getting to be part of their lives is the best second chance that Grand Pear could've asked for, In fact I have no doubt that all of them being a family again is exactly what both Bright Mac and Pear Butter would've wanted for all of them.

I honestly think the directors didn't wanna shows how they died because they want us to see how they lived. It's actually really beautiful to think about, since many times the main focus about dead characters is how they died. They were people too, not just corpses, they had personalities, they had dreams and fears and hopes, they were alive, and it's something that most people forget about their dead relatives. I lost my dad three years ago but I remember how he lived, his smiles, his jokes, not only the day I saw him into a grave. I always cry when I watch this episode

13:33 That's what Mrs. Cake is helping to explain here; her current name is "Cup Cake", and she used to be named "Chiffon Swirl", meaning she changed it (even further than what simply marrying her husband, Carrot Cake, would do). It's not an unreasonable leap to apply this to other ponies (we even see it with Spoiled Rich, who used to be named Spoiled Milk before she got married, as well as Pinkamena Diane Pie [Pinkie Pie] and Princess Mi Amore Cadenza [Princess Cadence]). We also get to see Princess Cadance and Shining Armor name their kid Flurry Heart, after the events surrounding her birth. Several names are also passed down/related to family (like Fluttershy's parents being Mr. & Mrs. Shy, the entire Pie, Apple, and Pear families, and even Twilight Sparkle and Shining Armor being named closely to their parents, Twilight Velvet and Night Light). And even if all of that fails, the different types of ponies have naming themes that they can fall back on (for example, pegasi are often named after fast/flying/weather things, such as Zephyr Breeze, Spitfire, Soarin', Lightning Dust, Windy Whistles, and Rainbow Dash; unicorns are often named after lights/astronomy/time/fancy things; and earth ponies are often named after food/plants/geology). TLDR: There are many ways the show uses to explain how ponies get their names, going to show just how much thought was put into the world building. Edit: forgot to add that there are still plenty of ponies whose talents don't very well match their names (for example, Cheese Sandwich is a party planner similar to Pinkie, Kerfuffle is a fashion designer, and even Miss Cheerilee [Cheer is very general, and her talent is specifically teaching]). In those cases, their Cutie Marks seem to either only represent the talent (as with Kerfuffle, whose Mark is a yarn ball), or blend to fit both the name and the talent (Cheese Sandwich's is a cheese sandwich that is being pulled apart to resemble an accordion [since he's played by Weird Al], and Miss Cheerilee's is sunflowers with smiling faces [as she explains it, it represents how she wants to help her students grow learn and grow]).

The two things I love most about this episode is Burned Oak and Granny Smith. Oak was just so somberly happy to talk about his friend, he's missed BrightMac, he lost a friend and he's finally able to talk about him, go over fond memories with people who want to hear it, to teach them about someone he loved. And Granny, despite the recidulous feud, she watched a girl be disowned by her own father, and she knew she couldn't just walk away from that. Granny knew now was not the time to worry about childish rivalries, Pear or not Buttercup needed family now more than ever. I think it made her unwillingness to talk about the Pears more understandable. She didn't just dislike them because of competition, she hated Grandpear for doing that to his daughter, she was angry at him, she was sad for Buttercup, and she was still mourning her children

Some of why this episode is so well-regarded is that the fandom had spent 7 years theorizing about the apple parents, while the show almost never alluded to them and we were all resigned to it never happening. Then it finally happens out of nowhere, and is also a great episode. As far as I recall the only previous references to their parents are when a pair of shooting stars fly over the barn during the apple family reunion episode (happens twice that episode - once when AJ is thinking about family who might not be able to attend next time, once at the end of the episode, and it was confirmed by the creators to be a reference to her parents), and during the song We'll Make Our Mark (which I believe you've reacted to), when AJ says "Mom and Dad would be so proud of you". The latter already got a bit of an emotional reaction from fans, as a shock that they were actually acknowledged. So when, two seasons later, in an episode that up until then didn't seem particularly unusual, we suddenly find that it's an Apple Parents episode, it was a pretty huge deal. For additional context, Burnt Oak and Grand Pear did not appear before this episode, but the family historian previously appeared in the episode where Pinkie thought she might be AJ's distant cousin, and they made a family road trip to Goldie Delicious to investigate. I believe you've reacted to Apples To The Core from that road trip. Others have mentioned that William Shatner plays Grand Pear, I didn't notice anyone pointing out that Felicia Day is Buttercup (maybe I just missed it).

I love how you keep asking 'why has no one talked about this?' Obviously the short realistic answer is this story didn't exist until now but I have a better answer. Granny Smith probably always regretted how she acted to Pear Butter. In a future episode in the last season we get another semi flashback of Bright Mac and Pear Butter working together on the farm with all three kids (Applebloom being a literal baby and being carried). Pear Butter never shared this story because well...Her father left her and there was no need to share the story (plus maybe she wanted to in the future but then they both died). Granny Smith might not have shared because maybe she was worried her grandkids will treat her differently knowing how she treated their mother. Grief is a hard thing for everyone and it's hard to bring it up. I know when my Dad passed away I didn't talk about him for years, it's only recently I spoke to my mom about him and gotten stories of his past that I never knew. A Grandparent isn't supposed to be the one still alive to tell stories of their children to their own grandchildren. It's just very sad but in the end the family is brought back together and can let go of the grief they held.

"They live in such a small town, how have they never had these conversations before?" I get where you're coming from, but they're also hard conversations. I get that it's just a show, but it seems they were all kids when their parents died and these are conversations that the adults around them probably wouldn't initiate until the kids asked for more stories and stuff. Like the firewood guy talking about how he figured they'd come asking eventually, in fact he hoped they would and how awkward Applejack was when she asked about it initially, that actually seems more natural and realistic to me than the idea of them having these conversations a long time ago.

13:31 maybe the reason why they hasn’t been coming up their parents in conversation before this, was because it’s such a hard topic for them, specially, with Apple Bloom, not be able to remember them because she was so young. And big Mac and applejack had to grow up to take care of the farm and their grandmother and baby sister, after they died. it’s just a topic that’s not exactly easy to talk about so I think they were more waiting for apple siblings to start the conversation.

I've heard it time and again that this story handles loss and grief so well because it doesn't tell you how they died. It shows you how they lived. And its the memories that follow you into the future long after someone is unable to be a part of it physically. Who they were when alive is what shaped and changed you. Loss can change you too, but you feel it because you loved who they were when they were beside you, when they held you, and how they guided you. And in cases like this where the siblings didn't really know their parents, they can see the great impact their parents left on everyone they knew and feel closer to them through their memories. It was their life that tied everyone together, not their death.

There's a fan comic (with several dubs here on KZbin) suggesting why Grand Pear chose to come back when he did. The Life I Never Had. While not OFFICIALLY canon, most in the fandom have accepted it as lore. The comic dub by Scribbler Productions, in particular hits hard, because it uses Grand Pear's final words between him and Pear Butter as echoes in his mind when he finds out she's dead. As for why nopony talked about it, think how both angry and heartbroken Granny Smith would've been as her grandchildren are growing up while their parents are dead any time the fued or the Pears were brought up. She would've been carrying guilt from not trying to end the feud sooner so Pear Butter wouldn't have been forced to choose between families and furious at Grand Pear for letting the feud blind him so much he'd be willing to abandon his own daughter. She basically became not only a Mother In Law to Pear Butter, but an actual mother as she now had no parental figure left in her life. Those combined emotions would've caused so much turmoil within her, is it really a surprise she couldn't bring herself to talk about it? The same with the Major, Burnt Oak and Mrs Cake. Once both of them died, they felt it wasn't right to bring it up unless the Apple siblings asked themselves, because of all the baggage the feud and Grand Pear abandoning Pear Butter would come along with it.

Pony names - names often follow familly lines... Pie family, cake family... though unicorns tend to reverse it with the first name being the family name... Twilight Sparkle, Twilight Velvet, Twilight Mist. Earth ponies often share last names. Saffron Swirl, when she got married became Saffron Cake. Spoiled Milk, when she got married became Spoiled Rich. But yes often there is an are of magic about the names where the parents choose a name that will fit the mark... though not always.. sometimes its pretty vague.

13:53 it's likely Burnt Oak's family were also wood sellers so that's why they gave him a name that eventually matched his cutie mark in practicing a family business. That's just a theory ofc, a more concrete example is Twilight Sparkle. Her parents are named Twilight Velvet and Nightlight. They didn't name her that because they knew her cutie mark was gonna be a sparkly star, but because naming kids after stars and space is something many, many unicorns do. We also don't know if either of her parents have jobs related to astronomy or anything. On the other hand, Babs Seed, despite being an Apple family member, got a cutie mark in hairdressing, despite her name not having anything to do with it. In other words, the names, the pony's jobs, and their cutie marks are never strictly dependent on each other. Then ofc we've seen Chiffon Swirls and Pear Butter going by Mrs Cake and Buttercup. Who knows how many other ponies have changed their names to match their careers/status.

This episode did a good job introducing us to the complete story of the Apple family. Having always been used to tell many different types of stories about family relationships, the mystery of who the parents were was always present. And they tackled it here without leaving room for doubts. The staff wasn’t able to say out loud they’re dead, but we see that they clearly passed on, and how it left an impact to the people in their lives. Talking about the pains and struggles of their parents is not easy, especially when they’ve passed away. Out of respect for them, and respect for the grief of their kids. Granny was never able to talk about the Pears because she saw first hand the pain they brought to her new daughter. The moment Grand Pear disowned Buttercup all the animosity Granny felt towards the union vanished. She welcomed her into her family without hesitation. And in that time Buttercup’s identity as a Pear was no more. She became an Apple, had three beautiful kids, and lived a life full of love. The only regret she could have had before passing away, was never seeing her father again. That grief, the grief that a daughter could never reunite with her father was what made it hard for Granny to talk about it. She lost her son, and her daughter. And she was left to raise their three kids, hoping they’d never have to suffer that same fate. In a sense the town was also protecting them from learning about the truth. It’s hard to know when it is a right time to talk about these things. Burnt Oak never shared the stories of his friend because it leaves him emotional. Cupcake never talked about it because she wasn’t sure when it would be a right time to bring it up. She lost her best friend and was always there to witness how much pain they went through to be happy. And the mayor wasn’t close to the family. She simply was the one to officiate the wedding so it wasn’t her place yo talk about it. Even the family historian was unsure of talking to them about it out of respect for the grief of the family. But as they’re older now, minus Apple Bloom, she decided it was time they got answers. Given the fact AB doesn’t have memories of her parents, they passed away when she was a child. And while we don’t know anyone’s ages, she’s still clearly very young. At most she’s a preteen. The death is still recent enough for the wounds to be fresh. With everything out in the open now, the family can finally start healing again.

"What do you mean no wonder? That makes no sense!" ..because Granny Smith is equally at fault for what happened and it`s a very dark subject that is not easy to talk with kids about in general. Of course she would not want to talk about it.

@peregry5 ай бұрын
Apples have been bred for a variety of utility, more tart and sour varieties, like Granny Smiths, are meant to be cooked, while others like Honey Dew, are meant for eating raw. Apples are also bred for long term storage, hence why they tend to be harder. Pear were bred more to be eaten raw and when preserved tend to be candied.

About the "Why didn't they say anything sooner ??" other than the justifications in episode... Apple Bloom is very young. They didn't die that long ago. And word of god says they got mauled by Timberwolves. But you can guess how tragic their death was because of how they're clearly Roméo and Juliet.

I think it's implied the Apple Siblings had the time to grieve about their parents, but as for how they got together and parts of their lives with their friends the siblings didn't really know about. Also when Applebloom gets her cutie mark in S5 AJ does say "If Ma and Pa were here, they'd be so proud of you." that at the time, besides AJ looking at 2 shooting stars wayyyy earlier in the show's run, was practically proof of cement that Buttercup and Bright Mac were gone and this very episode, solidified said cement if there was still any doubts. Edit: Fixed a typo

I think I have a theory on how they are named. Just like we have our last names to define from which family we're from, they have their special trademarks(Apples, Sparkles, Beauty, Lightning, Pears). So the apples for example, are all the families names from apple kinds(Big Macintosh, Apple Bloom, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith) or variations of recipes with apples. Like wise with the other families.

As to pony names, it seems to be a voluntary thing. Ponies change them when it seems appropriate , so a pony that has a name that particularly suits their job and/or Cutie Mark may have deliberately changed it to fit. Chiffon Swirl married a baker and became Cup Cake. This is frequently, but not always, connected to the fact that some families practice a particular naming scheme and others don't. Two perfect examples are the Pie family and the Apple family. The Pie family obviously practices a pretty strict naming scheme, the last word in their name is always Pie (Pinkie Pie, Marble Pie, Maud Pie, etc). On the other hand, the Apple family practices theme naming, where they don't have to specifically have apple in their names, but it should be something relating to apples (Applejack and Apple Bloom, but also Big Mcintosh and Goldie Delicious). Sometimes marrying into such a family results in a name change (Spoiled Milk became Spoiled Rich when she married into the Rich family), but other times not (Pinkie Pie's mother Cloudy Quartz did not change her name or add Pie to the end when she married into the Pie family). Other families don't practice any kind of naming scheme and simply keep their names the way they are. Mi Amore Cadenza and Shining Armor did not change their names when they married and their daughter Flurry Heart shares no name in common with them. Likewise Rainbow Dash and her parents Bow Hothoof and Windy Whistles. Twilight Sparkle shares only her first name with her mother Twilight Velvet and none at all with her father Night Light or brother Shining Armor. Ponies don't seem have surnames as we understand it, even though it sometimes seems that way when they use addresses like Mr. and Mrs.. But Rarity, Fluttershy, and Applejack show that it's relatively common to only have one word as your name. And Rarity at least has certainly been addressed as Ms. Rarity on more than one occasion.
