Since lots of comments are really honing in on the negatives, I would just wanna point out that Cities Skylines 1 was not a great game when it came out first. It took years of updates, mods, and expansions to get to what everyone now thinks as the "standard". It was way better than SimCity, but again that was not a huge hurdle to cross. Colossal Order is still not a massive game studio (they're pretty much still indie for crying out loud) by any stretch of the meaning, and they are not super well versed in releasing feature complete releases in the past either, that much should be clear with CS 1 and the expansions. Where they shine is working on the game to tweak, improve, and fix things over years upon years. Did they rush Cities Skylines 2 out? In my opinion yes. They could have taken longer to fine tune and fix things. Is it unoptimized? Yes, but again, aiming for similar 8 years of longevity I don't mind, as long as we would get options to tune down performance and simulation. Most likely those options will come, but they should have worked those things out better and focus better on key aspects of the simulation first. Will the game be amazing if given time? Absolutely yes, no doubt. Remember that Cities Skylines absolutely revolutionized this genre of games. We should not expect a second revolution, that would be very difficult for anyone to pull off. Just chill a bit and wait for how things unfold, I'm sure we'll get our props in due time.

The problem is that you are paying 50 euros for a game that could have offered more. You shouldn't have to wait multiple months to get updates and DLC to make it more worthwhile and make it a good game. I know that its a standard these days and they are not at fault on their own. Early Access is there for a reason. It seems that with a couple more months of development and some more additions, like bicycles a lot of the negatives would have not been there. And that's kinda disappointing for a lot of people. Supporting a game for 8 years should not mean releasing a bare-bones game to then add content in the form of DLCs. Which Paradox absolutely loves to do, so its always the question of how much Colossal Order had to say in this.

@@rakuloe I do myself also wonder if Paradox is rushing them. It's worrying if they are. Their most profitable game ever needing to be rushed to a sequel? Hope they're not close to going under or anything. However, the same argument applies to the price tag. It was the same situation with CS1, the game was very rudimentary at launch. Again, not a commendable standard for a gaming company, but clearly a Colossal Order/Paradox thing. And most stuff taken for granted have always been part of the free updates that came along with the DLCs, so I still am not too concerned with that. They could, and should have done things better and just take an extra 6 months if they this clearly needed it (with the console thingy first and foremost). It is still easily the best game series in its genre by a long shot, which is unbelievable for an indie studio out of Finland.

very true, i actually bought CS in 2015 on launch and refunded it because i didnt enjoy it. i bought it and tried it again during the covid lockdowns in 2020 and i was absolutely addicted, mostly due to the insane amount of mods and assets + the dlc and patches that perfected the game. vanilla CS at launch was *not fun* (in my opinion) give it time.

This is my impression. While there are many good features and improvements over CS1, this doesn’t feel finished. The industry stuff looks like it was developed (!!) for a child’s game and appears at odds with other parts of the game mechanics. I think I’ll give this a miss for now.

At a risk of sounding repetitive, my main concern with CS:2 is that every creator's city I've seen so far has looked INCREDIBLY similar. When you are forced to zone low density (on top of the typical RCI of these games), you end up with a really flattened out diversity. You can do minor things like work in excessive amounts of parks and neighborhoods and things, but at the end of the day, it's still the same ratio you see in EVERY build. And it really destroys the personality of a city.

Probably the most informative of today's vid's FC, so huge thanks for this! In terms of the demands and the warnings not matching; I'd be interested to see what the commercial that is complaining is actually trying to sell. Couple that with the unemployment and the jobs available: are the jobs available for well-/highly-educated but your unemployed less well educated? Or it could just be buggy beta-code of course! The whole industry thing? Sure looks like they might say "We will be revisiting this shortly!" to... we hope!
@japes7
@japes7 Жыл бұрын
I agree. If you look at her residential, the fact that commercial is complain about lack of customers does not cause R demand to climb, makes sense. The problem is rather with the location of that C stores, or the product like you said. R demand was low because there were unoccupied buildings, so big buildings take time to fill up, especially if the location or conditions of that building isnt attractive for the cims. Education level I think is playing a role there about why jobs are empty, or those jobs are not at good locations, or the commercial and office may downscale, they can reduce their jobs of they are not doing well.

I don't think it costs a lot of computational power to display every citizen living in a tower considering what the game is already doing. From what we've seen, CS2 is doing what the developers call "deep simulation." I seems that means they're basing the entire simulation, everything from traffic to resource demand, on the aggregate needs and wants of every single individual Cim. If they're already doing all that, it's trivial to show you where they live. I tend to look at all these random game "features" as potential exploits for modders. We can now track the progress of individual Cims. By extension, we can build genealogy maps, and define prominent dynasties within the communities. Wouldn't it be fun if, after a hundred years, a major Boulevard were automatically named after a prominent family in the community? Or maybe a park? Or an airport? I love this level of detail.

So, this is what I think the demand conundrum is. You have high demand for industry because you are importing ALOT of stuff, just viewing your empty cargo ships leaving and full ones arriving is evidence of that. The electronics you have stored in your port are what was recently imported and waiting for trucks to distribute it around town. So, the game is asking you to build more industry to lower your importation needs, and once you have more jobs from those industries, your residential demand will go up... Thus fixing the "not enough customers" complaints at the same time.
@Kristofburger
@Kristofburger Жыл бұрын
In CS2 it seems to matter a lot more where commercial is located because there's an infographic on customer density. There's just not nearly as much commercial demand in low density residential areas, and content creators generally have been confused by this because they autopilot to CS1 zoning habits.
@jceess
@jceess Жыл бұрын
@@Kristofburger low density residential in CS2 seems to be absolutely brutal (in a realistic way). Huge single family neighborhoods only support a few shops at best, whereas 4-5 blocks of medium density or just 1 block of high density supports the same amount. Not to mention mixed zoning which is basically a perpetual motion machine in that regard.

I wish there was more dynamic "uglification" of the city because all the textures and assets just look too.. perfect. Too clean for a bustling city. Maybe if the roads and sidewalks were slowly deteriorating, cracking, and the facades were getting more dirty and people would leave trash and litter in poorer area around... that would be cool and more realistic imo

Amazing video, really went in to depth and you seemed to be very unbiased and direct. I didn't know until this video that bike infrastructure was not going to be in the base game. Bike infrastructure is such an integral part of city design, and such an effective and important mode of transportation. It staggers me that they just straight up haven't included it. It's not just the netherlands anymore that enjoy their bikes, across the world more and more cities are implementing proper bike infrastructure as the way forward. It's incredibly upsetting knowing i'll have to just build any old north american city - especially considering that most cities in the US are used as examples of what went wrong with urban design throughout history!

For all those electronics in the harbor, your city has a deficit of *locally* produced electronics. The reason that you have 200t of electronics sitting in your harbor is that your city has about 387t of electronics delivered into that harbor per month. That "deficit" is not a shortage, instead its the total tonnage of import orders on electronics.

For the demands, I remember the transportation video emphasized the distance the citizens have to travel to a destination effect if they will. Maybe that’s what’s happening here, yes you have enough people but where they live is too far away from where they’re needed or as you mentioned it may also be due to the rents - the people needed for those jobs were priced out of the market.
@jemleye
@jemleye Жыл бұрын
In terms of demand: 1. I wonder how much taxes affect that. Maybe the game expects you to tax industry and commercial harder than residential. 2. Demand most likely is not exactly that the city "needs" something. I imagine it works more akin to there being businesses and industry that want to move into the city, which means there is demand on the free estate market for these new businesses. These explain one another as well. Low taxes make the city an enticing spot for new commercial and industrial development, but the taxes might be too high for the residents, meaning they don't really want to move in. Ofc the system should have demands better eat into other demands, as your situation is indeed rather odd and lopsided, and it wouldn't take a genius to figure that you wouldn't really wanna put your business into the city despite low taxes if you can't find the workers. Small optimization stuff really
@fewcandy
@fewcandy Жыл бұрын
Yes it;s really baffled me but I'm sure there is method behind the madness, I just don't think it's super intuative! I had lowered residential taxes and made it higher for most industry and commercial, waited a long time, and still nothing changed!

And also they might be trying to have positive mindsets that some things could be improved soon. Because remember, they were able to pass along their concerns and criticisms directly to CO. Being honest is important, I think we just have to wait for release version reviews.

Very informative video, thank you for your hard work! I think I can make sense of your residential demand by putting together the pieces of information throughout the video. I am sorry if this is presumptuous, obviously you have played 100 hours and I have just watched for like 50 hours. ;) You are right, unemployment is high and also empty residences are available. The reasons no one wants to move in anyway are also listed, unfortunately without any indication of their respective strengths in cancelling one another out. I am certain taxation is your problem. You have residential taxes between 4 and 18 %. You wrote in a comment that you had lowered it for highly educated people. I saw a few KZbinrs do that to encourage people to get educated so I suspected as much anyway. Your CIMs are happy with education in the city, so I assume you have no problem with it. You didn’t show the workforce stats, but I would think you may have unemployment in another education bracket than the one the open jobs in your city fall into. At least in CS1 people moving in were uneducated and since it would be pretty game breaking if it were otherwise I come to the conclusion that your tax rate for uneducated may be as high as 18%, making residential demand impossible to materialise.

29:05 I kind of think the reason the oil field looks like this is that the devs made one field then went on to make more pressing things. Sot hey just made this one place holder for the grain farm and just copied it over. They are probobly coming back to this and fix it at a later date. My guess is that it was the season assets that was more pressing, and now when that is done they probobly are about to fix this. I kind of doubt they get it done by launch. 42:20 The clothing don´t take simulation speed, that take gpu power, and it almost certainly in a LOD, so when you zoom out the high detail clothing is unloaded and replaced by a low Polly model. Typically most modell would have 3-5 LOD so when you zome out the very detaled dude is just replaced with one with solid color pants, top and hat/hair

One thing I would love to know, what's the water like? What's the viscosity? is it thick and syrupy like CS1 or is it more " runny " like real water?

Great video and thank you for showing us more of the assets. Although I think CO were headed in the right the direction, I still think they dropped the ball with their design choices. The most disappointing (besides the specialized industries appearance) are the low residential assets and to a lesser extent, the industrial buildings. For the low residential, they really went wild with the driveways and made them too big, which means smaller yards and less greenery in general. This makes the zoned houses look like concrete jungles instead of nice, cozy areas. Looking at places like Tampere, Finland in Google Earth, I'm not sure I understand why they chose this art direction when in Finland (where the developers are located), the suburban homes have big yards and there is a clear distinction between those homes and the more industrial and urban areas. Everything in CS 2 is just too grey as well. Again, in Finland, you have these houses and buildings with grey roofs, but you also have a lot of nice looking orange roofs there as well, which could have brought more variety to the vanilla assets. I'm really hoping they do better with the dlc (which I hate to look forward to just to enjoy the game more).

The job thing makes sense, you may have a demand for high skill workers that the 8.9% low skill workers cannot fulfill but I really don't know if that's the case.

11:15 The name is probobly algorithmic generated. So it don´t matter to the simulation what the person is named and so on. It just cares where they live and work and where they currently are. Still a list of a million units don´t take that long to update.

37:01 the bridge height makes much more sense for clearance. Ferries, ships and trains should only clip bridges/overpasses on podcasts about engineering disasters.

I am super excited for this game, however the more and more gameplay I see of it the more worried I become at its performance. This is a step back from the performance of Cities Skylines 1, and with the bump in recommended system requirements and the delay on consoles, I'm deeply concerned. I am lucky enough to have a PC that goes beyond the recommended and even still I think this game is going to run poorly on it, feel bad for those who are now left under the specs requirements

Think of all the folk that complained about accuracy of traffic in CIM1… you can’t have it both ways, there needs to be a trade off. This will be around for over a decade, performance will improve as will PC specs as people upgrade their PCs.

You got to realise the potatoes people were running when CS:1 launched - I'm sure it challenged many people's rigs. Now nearly 10 years later we have CS:2 in all it's naked glory... awaiting patches, mods, assets and dlc. And yes, most peoples rigs are going to struggle on high settings. But in 5 years this will be running easy on your shiny new setup... and with all the goodness that CS:1 developed, plus some. Just remember how clunky CS:1 was on launch - fear not.

Thanks for this informative Video, was much needed to have a little deepdive in the simulation part. Just some questions that came to my mind. For the low residential demand, could it be because of the higher taxation (in an unbalanced way), so taxes play a too big role for the demand, less than the availability of Jobs? And second Question for the high commertial demand, is this a mean demand value, so that you might need massive commercial in a part of the city, where there are more customers? I saw there is a heatmap for customer density, when placing commercial zones. These are just my theories of how one might be able to explain these contradictory demands and stats. Obviously i haven't played the game so i think you and other creators now have a much better knowledge and overview of things. It might be really just unbalaced but wanted or an uninteded bug. One thing I really like about the game so far, just as you, is the time simulation with the rush hour, thats the type of depth I wanna see for other parts of the game to. I'm looking forward to how the devs will further develope the game after release and I hope the performance will get optimized throughout that process. But overall I'm on the positive site even if a later release date surely could have benefited the game.

Early on, there was a list of console achievements that included a "rat infestation." At the time, I figured that might be result of not picking up all of the garbage. I'm a little disappointed that it isn't happening. LOL

I've just subbed. Cheers for that honest play through. The ability to control industry in your city through tuning taxes and imports was a big sell, sound disappointing that it's not quite there. Out of interest, when does your media imbargo lift, when can we start to hear some of your thoughts.

Thank you @fewcandy, I suspect from what I've seen it's not miles off, it looks like specialised industrial assets could have been refined. And there seems to be some clear balancing issues and bugs and performance probably could have benefited from a little more time in the oven in regards to optimization. It doesn't look that far off. I'm not sure how much they can readily address in a week. Looking forward to your take though

I like your city... Although wat are the specs on your pc, really getting worried about my pc running the game. (the fps usage (lag) seems pretty high). One more thing that I notice again about the roads is that where vehicles drive it should be darker in the ashphalt not lighter as the rubber of the tires give off some polution and exaust's immision darkens ashphalt. so I really hope that they would look into that... (am I wrong?)

Nope. Won't be happening right now. You can just purchase the tiles. There are lots of permits given especially around this milestone they are at. It's so that you don't grow everything on the first few milestones. Your city should progress with time.

close up everything looks so slow!, those ambulances pulling out took ages? But it looks gorgeous. I'm definitely going to buy it, but I'm going to let it settle and develop a bit first, let the mods build out. Seen too much that would drive me nuts right now. EDIT: Hate those cranes when buildings are going up - hope theres a mod to change that, especially for small buildings EDIT2: Just finished watching Biffa's episode, he was also complaining about the economy and High rent warnings, seems to have happened after the last big update, so hopefully just a bug that needs sorting.

With the demand, it tells you why you don’t have residential demand. You need to lower taxes as that was a major issue. Once you do that, you should see a rise in demand.
