It's impressive to me that a country song can be about armed banditry, sailing, large-scale construction projects, interstellar space travel and reincarnation.

It was the 70's. The age of free love (and drugs) hadn't quite faded yet, and so you had some very unique ballads coming up in that time. You couldn't even say the 70's was anything in particular musically. There were soooo many good tunes coming from everywhere back then, that whole decade was swimming in gold and this was a part of that. It often felt like it was time to toss the old rules out of what couldn't be done and just go with the flow. These Boys were among those who helped revitalize country in a way no one had thought possible, and we'll all love them for it forever.

Not originally a country song. Written and first recorded by Jimmy Webb, produced by George Martin in 1977. Much more pop and orchestral. Webb was a friend of Waylon Jennings who recorded several of his songs including “MacArthur Park.”
@thejuliebean
@thejuliebean 4 жыл бұрын
@@tonkaGuy888 You aren't wrong, but for me the point is that country embraced the song and made it their own by implementing a country feel and beat. The lyrics being what they are were still embraced by country, which involves the song into the canon of country music. So the original comment can still be applicable. If country stars had said, "Hey this thematic content isn't country and we don't want to do it" then it wouldn't be a country music song. But it is because Webb's inspired lyrics inspired these stars as well.

@@dennisjakobsen1648 Are you trying to start a debate?. Real music was around in the late 1800's and early 1900's that my grandparents listened too, not mindless beats for cavemen that people listen today. Modern music has NO skill or talent from the musicians its just people selling a message of sin to manipulate the children to support evil (in my opinion). The highwaymen is great

To stick with the country theme, here are a few examples: Blues Saraceno (gothic country/blues/hard rock/heavy metal) The White Buffalo (alternative country/country/roots rock) The Brothers Bright (modern alternative rock) The Heavy Horses (country/roots) Brother Dege (gothic americana/lafayette indie/modern blues rock/rebel blues)

Look up on YT Marty Stuart's commenting about presenting this song to Johnny Cash. Marty was thinking of the 4 guys and knew they wouldn't have to sing the verses together/harmonize which was good because of Willie's and Johnny's voices being so different. Marty said Johnny said "I want the one about the spaceship." The Stuart quote is only a couple of minutes long and easy to find.

Lyrics.. I was a highwayman Along the coach roads I did ride With sword and pistol by my side Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade The bastards hung me in the spring of '25 But I am still alive I was a sailor I was born upon the tide With the sea I did abide I sailed a schooner 'round the Horn to Mexico I went aloft to furl the mainsail in a blow And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed But I am living still I was a dam builder Across the river deep and wide Where steel and water did collide A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound But I am still around I'll always be around, and around and around And around and around and around and around I'll fly a starship Across the Universe divide And when I reach the other side I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can Perhaps I may become a highwayman again Or I may simply be a single drop of rain But I will remain And I'll come back again, and again And again and again and again and again And again

Can we take a moment to appreciate the brilliant guitar playing of Reggie Young? The man was a legendary session guitarist in Memphis and Nashville. His band once toured with The Beatles as their opening act. He played guitar on some of the biggest hits of artists such as Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson. He was also a member of Jimmy Buffet's Coral Reefer Band.

That's interesting: tbh after hearing the song a few times I got the impression that it's from the point of view of a single soul being reincarnated over the ages from the highway man right finally through to the spaceman, and then there's the line "when I reach the other side, I'll find a place to rest my spirits if I can". That's the impression I got, anyway.

Lyrics I was a highwayman, along the coach roads I did ride With sword and pistol by my side Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade Many a soldier shed his life blood on my blade The bastards hung me in the spring of '25 But I am still alive I was a sailor, I was born upon the tide And with the sea I did abide I sailed a schooner 'round the horn to Mexico I went aloft to furl the mainsail in a blow And when the yards broke off, they said that I got killed But I am living still I was a dam builder across the river deep and wide Where steel and water did collide A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below They buried me in that gray tomb that knows no sound But I am still around I'll always be around and around and around And around and around and around I'll fly a star ship across the universe divide And when I reach the other side I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can Perhaps I may become a highwayman again Or I may simply be a single drop of rain But I will remain And I'll be back again and again and again And again and again and again
