I used to be addicted to social media. I was the kind of girl that's always posting selfies and uploading stories of her breakfast. I was obsessed with my self image for 10+ years. A nervous breakdown made me give it all up months ago. I can assure you that social media was the poison of my youth. I deleted IG, Facebook, Twitter, reddit and tiktok at the same time. I have to admit when I started I did fall into a lot of the traps mentioned in this video but when you learn to use it as a tool and not a life sorce then your safe. If it wasn’t for social media I wouldn’t of met some of my best friends but the predatory side of it needs to be fixed

This is what it should be.. unfortunately I have never found people who wanted to consistently interact with me. So it becomes a platform where you just stare at stuff others post. And you don't post anything because that's better than posting and it being ignored completely.
@HK47_1153 жыл бұрын
@@hgzmatt same, that's how I am on social media. I have tried talking to people, I have had long conversations with people. I have never met one single person on Twitter, Reddit, Facebook absolutely anywhere that has ever ever ever ever ever ever wanted to continue the conversation the very next day. Especially Reddit., I mean it's amazing by the fact that anybody can truly find a friend anywhere and develop a collection anywhere across the world through a screen. But I feel like that takes its own set of skills to do. Such were some of us out there, such as myself, and probably for you to maybe, I need that in person human connection. I personally can't do that constantly over the screen never in the same room bulshit. And good for those who can't but I just can't. Not to mention I just can't develop a relationship or friendship with somebody like that. And I truly think that's more so person-to-person think I don't think just anybody will be able to make friends online. Whether it's just not for you are you just can't possibly see how anybody ever anywhere in the world can ever make a friend on Reddit or Twitter or fall place. Discord sure, but read it? Those got to be fake people. People actually being friendly to each other on read it, it is a very very very very very rare sight to see. Even more rare than seeing people being friendly on Twitter. Let alone watching to be somebody's friend

This is exactly what I went through with dealing with social media over the years. At first it was new and fun but then I realized that my "followers" weren't real friends since we never met in real life etc. And only communicated through funny one liner jokes on their posts. There is so much distance even though your there to connect with others. I used to get really sad when some people unfollowed me or left because I didn't follow them back. It made me realize they were just doing it for the number gain and not to see my artwork. I'm just at the point where I don't care too much how many followers I have on IG or Twitter. I just want to go on and look at art or watch funny videos to relax. I don't want friends for the numbers, I want friends for the laughs, trust and kindness. However, I am also learning to be friends with myself and accepting myself more.

I understand that we shouldn't place too much value in social media status and that we should try to balance out how much we use it. But for some people, it's the only way they'll be able to "associate themselves" with others in the world. Take me, for example; due to my learning disabilities, I'm unable to drive on my own and meet people. But since I joined Facebook, I was not only able to reconnect with people I haven't seen since I graduated back in 2004, I've also met people who were just like me; people who've lived with Hydrocephalus for years (if not all their lives)

All my life growing up, I never even cared about social media. In my highschool, everyone had social media accounts but me. Did it upset me? No, because I’m not one of those teenagers who do the whole “I feel like I don’t fit in since everyone has something I don’t or everyone has these so I want it as well to fit in” bullshit. I never cared about views or subs because I don’t even know these people. I didn’t get a social media account until April in 2018 and I only made one just to put my voice over work on there because putting them on social media is the highest possible way for me to build up my teaching career to get a job in voice over. 13 years have passed since I was 6th grade and I am still asking myself this question: Why do people make such a big goddamn deal about followers, subs, or friends that you have in social media? These people have nothing better to do?

You, my man, speak the goddamn truth! I used to BEG my mom to let me get a Facebook just so I could fit in. Then, not even like half a year after I created my account, I realized that social media is kinda stupid thanks partially to this episode. Everyone was so obsessed with followers and likes that it just felt unreal and fake to me. I remember when I got to school one morning, everyone was obsessing over the color of a dress. At first, I had no idea what the fuck was going on and when I found out, I thought to myself "this is really stupid". Like who cares?! I now understand that, for some, it's a fun debate, but this is some of the shit people obsess over on social media. I also don't feel the need to constantly post about myself and let everyone know what I'm doing. I like living a private life, void of the toxicity of social media. I'll go on platforms that aren't youtube maybe like once or twice a year. Maybe more if I'm talking to someone I haven't seen in a long time. I am now getting very tired of using the Internet in general. My plan is to use the Internet only when I need to at my local library. No smartphone, no wired connection, no pc, no console. I'm going to buy a Mudita Pure phone which has no Internet but is 4G capable so will be future proof as 3G is being switched off soon and eventually 2G will be too. In the UK we pay a tv licence because of the BBC, but you are exempt if you only watch dvds and blu-rays. So that's my plan. Watch what I love with no adverts, read books, newspapers (not too much though), reignite an interest in real life games like cards, board games, pool/snooker etc. Keep fit. Enjoy nature. I look back on a lifetime spent behind a screen. Is this really how we're supposed to be?

First I genuinely enjoyed social media. It was a great feature to everyday life, until everyone, myself included, cared too much about it. Today, Facebook seems like a tv channel made for ads 24/7.

5:51 sounds like The Meaning of Nerd was trying to stop himself from laughing, whether that was the case or not, I still found it funny

As someone who deleted their FB account and have toxic ass family who use this site, I couldn't agree more! Back when I was younger my first time using Facebook was in high school because I always wanted to get the view of cool kids, but then I had to realize that's all a lie, it's all illusion just put yourself in a bad position, even back when I use that my parents did as well but I had to realize how toxic they were when they use, it's why I deleted my account because my step mom keep controlling it like it was bad so I deleted my account ever since and I don't regret ever since, there when I know use Facebook but not me I don't care they make me look bad or whatever you see you why I don't use Facebook no more because losers and amateurs and amateurs like these people, thank you toxic family for helping me get rid of something that I don't need! Also this episode published why Stan's my favorite
