The first time Sean Connery and American Director Sidney Lumet worked together. This is without a doubt the best of the five films they made together. Ian Hendry plays the sadistic psychotic staff Williams. Jack Watson usually played a Sergeant Major but plays McGrath “ the useless article made in Yorkshire exported to the Middle East and marked fragile. “. Incredible cast Ossie Davis as jacko King. Harry Andrews as the RSM slowly losing control to Hendry s Staff Williams. Ian Bannen as the sympathetic Staff Harris. Alfie Lynch Roy Kinnear and Sir Michael Redgrave all excellent. Cinema goers back in 1965 probably weren’t expecting to see Sean Connery in such a serious Drama. He made The Hill between Goldfinher and Th. IThunderball. Whenever Sean was invited to a film festival of his own films he always insisted they show The Hill. Without a doubt Sean’s and Sidney Lumets most underrated under appreciated film. Ossie Davis is an American civil rights icon. He and his wifeRuby Dees civil rights activism probably hurt their careers. It took Director:writer Spike Lee to bring them to a new generation of filmgoers in Do the Right Thing and Jungle fever. All told just an incredible character study of soldiers enduring brutality under tortuous conditions in a British military stockade during World War Two. The Hill was made in Spain where temperatures would reach about 110-115 during the day. Sidney Lumet said “when I asked the actors to run up the hill. They ran up the hill. Did they ever. Brilliant script by Ray Rigby. Bloody Brilliant performances By Sean Jack Ossie ,Harry Andrews Roy Kinnear Alfie Lynch,and the two Ian’s Hendry and Bannen.

Ian Henry was not playing a psychotic , he was British Army . When I left the Royal Marines it was the ONLY film I ever saw that portrayed a British Army drill instructor.
@buddyvilla73932 ай бұрын
@@columbmurray It’s Hendry not Henry. Ray Rigby who wrote the script was in the British Army during The Second World War were you??? RSM Wilson brilliantly played by Harry Andrews tells Staff Williams “ you break them gently break them ,then you build them back up into men ,into soldiers who the Army can be proud of”. Does keeping private Stevens ( Alfie Lynch) out in the 120 degree heat running up and down “The Hill” in full kit with a gas mask on until he dies. If that’s not psychotic it’s definitely sadistic!!! Staff Harris ( Ian Bannen) warns RSM Wilson. “If Williams cripples the lady ( private Stevens) you will take the consequences!!!

Your comment is so full of information👍 👍 When the 🌎was messed up from Covid/lockdowns in England some had plenty of ‘time on our hands’. I spent some of it going ‘behind the scenes’ of all the Sean Connery films up to the 80’s. I watched THE HILL I was born in August 65 and OH What a cast of the great and good of British Films. My late father spent his 2 years National Service in the Army made up as Sergeant from 1952-54 out in Libya, based in Benghazi He told me that there were real life Army personnel just like the characters in the film. Like Jack Watson type/Roy Kinnear type Norman Bird type with the prostitute Sean was trying to ‘escape’ the Bond role. If the film had been made a bit later after Sean had completed YOLT in 66 ? ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍 👍 🏴🏴🏴🏴

I love the scene where Connery is injured on the ground and shouting back at the Sergeant Major about the punishment for mutiny. Immense clash of hard personalities!

I love it where King "resigns" from the British army and is lolling about demanding he's referred to as "Mr King" from now on. Then, when staff Harris is challenged about it, he replies "He's gone stark raving mad. Can't do a thing with him Sah!" (That was from memory)

Outstanding acting all round, but three career defining performances. Connery is excellent & showed he could be more than just 007. Harry Andrews is superb. His presence alone in the film says something. But it is Ian Hendry who really steals the show. He is Oscar worthy
@justonecornetto80 Жыл бұрын
Harry Andrews served as a British Army officer and was a D-Day veteran. His film persona however didn`t match his real life self as he was gay and by all accounts a very friendly person. Ian Hendry based his performance on an NCO he encountered while doing national service. A great actor who sadly succumbed to his personal demons at a relatively young age.

Sadly overlooked film. Stunning performances. Sean Connery's character is an old sweat. Knows you just have to keep your mouth shut and do the drill and you'll get through it. The black soldier is on a hiding to nothing but they'll only go so far with him as he's nothing to lose. Alfred Lynch's character is grist for the mill. Roy Kinnear's character always survives. Ian Hendry is perfect as a martinet that would be terrified of action. But Harry Andrews excels as the WO1. Perfect.They have their rank that nobody can tell them anything. But they have maturity and an understanding of men and how they can fail. You have to meet one to understand.

They're in a military prison yet their webbing is incorrectly assembled with the water bottle on the left and the small pack on the right. It might be a consequence of their being prisoners and not having small arms yet it would only serve to make getting at the water bottle awkward, ie for a right handed man as most are it would reaching across the body and having to steady it by holding the carrier with the left hand.
