In today's video we are looking at the history of Wes Craven's work. How he started with The Last House on the Left, and how The Hills Have Eyes informed decisions that he would make on A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream. Thanks for Watching!

Hey everybody! Hope you're doing great and that your year has started off well so far. I've been working on a few projects that I'm really excited about, one of them is pretty far along so I think I'm going to be able to get two videos out in February (hopefully). Also as I said in the video, I would love it if you went and gave Pim's Crypt a watch. The link to their video is in the description and I think they make great stuff. Stay safe until I see you again, and thanks for everything.

I mean, there ARE films that make the points this Soystache thinks this one makes, but this film is not it. Wes Craven did essentially War On Terror propaganda with Red Eye, though he's still ostensibly left but that I don't think what he's reading in this is what the creator intended him to lol. Btw, I should note I do like Wes Craven and even Red Eye, but being super hyperpolitical all the time seems like a very miserable life. And I would think in a way, the "final girl" trope makes 80's horror RIGHT WING since it's always the "pure virgin" who survives at the end. All in all, Horror can be political, or apolitical, or partly political, it's not inherently ANYTHING. The guy is seeing shit that's not there, though I wouldn't want the drugs he's on.

@@leogazebo5290 You didn't elaborate and you're simplifying what he said and taking it out of context. First of all, this is a movie analysis and not a personal narrative about the creator's personal views on race or the real act of cannibalism. I'm not ignoring what he said, I'm actually listening to it rather than being triggered by someone who is commenting on the deeper message of a film about wealth inequality and generational trauma in America. This is what he says about how the "Hill People" look and behave in the context of the film that is a metaphor for wealth inequality and disparity in America: "The hill people in reflection of that are dressed in an almost stereotypical parody of how Native Americans are often presented in older westerns mixed with with a caricature of the classic idea of the inbred redneck hillbilly. On the most basic surface superficial level this is a film about cannibals eating and killing a family who get lost on their summer vacation. Cannibalism as a theme in both "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "The Hills have Eyes" is a subversion and commentary on how historically rural country Americans are constantly crushed under the turning wheels of industry and drained of everything that they have so that the goods that they produce can be purchased at a fraction of their value and shipped off to larger wealthier areas leaving those rural stretches of lands as husks that never grow or prosper under these conditions. In these films those seen as rural hicks are rising up and eating the flesh of their symbolic masters. Consuming them as they themselves have been consumed. And in a way the film asks if these people are wrong for killing their invaders: is it wrong to eat the people who have been who have been eating you and your ancestors for decades or even centuries? Consuming everything that you and your people have ever made without creating anything of substantial value themselves? The phrase isn't kill the rich, it isn't hang the rich its eat the rich and was done that way with intention. In a way are they not justified for their actions? The hill people can be representative of anything that you want them to be really. They can be Native Americans and the hills themselves could be allegorical of them forced onto reservations. They could be black Americans that have for hundreds of years been forced to live within a dehumanizing system that has balances in place that ensure they never get ahead. They could be anyone who has been a victim of hundreds of years of horrifically violent white wealthy educated progress." Words and phrases of note here: "stereotypical", "parody", "theme", "symbolic", "consuming", "allegorical", "EAT THE RICH". I honestly don't understand how you are insinuating that he is actively comparing Native Americans to literal cannibals when he is merely discussing his interpretation of a revenge themed movie about wealth inequality and disenfranchised people who have been forced into a bleak, ruined, desolate environment after centuries of oppression. He literally says that they are "victims of hundreds of years of horrifically violent, white, wealthy, educated progress". He's saying It's a horror movie based on the concept of "eat the rich" and that it's an allegory. He is no way says that Native Americans or any other minority are actually sadistic cannibals but rather comments that this movie is a metaphor for groups of people who have been so abused by systemic, white capitalism that they are now coming back to essentially kill and eat the masters who have not only invaded their home but who have killed and eaten them and their ancestors for decades. I swear it's like 3/4 of the people in this comment thread have no idea what he's even talking about. It's like the second anyone flips the surface level interpretation of the film and sees the Carters as anything more than helpless victims of literal cannibalism, they lose their collective minds. The interpretation here suggests that the family may actually be symbols of the evil of American society who have driven any and all "others" into a barren wasteland and then simply expect to walk into their home and expect to have their privilege extended. It's akin to a white, wealthy family led by an ex-cop driving their half a million dollar Winnebago onto a reservation or into a ghetto and being expected to not be fu*ked with and welcomed with open arms by the people in those communities. The only difference is that this is a horror exploitation film from the 1970's. Get it?

@@darkjapan the tragedy and horror of indigenous people being exploited and harmed is in them being wronged. The hill people weren’t wronged. Some dudes got lost and then they tried to murder them. This doesn’t work as an analogy at all because when I read about (for example) the exploitation of the Native Americans, I think “wow. That was horrible and never should have happened and we should try to help fix the long-lasting damage which has resulted as a consequence.” But when I watch The Hills Have Eyes, I think “Wow. A supposed group of inbred cannibals that prey on people who passed by their cave. Bean was lazy man, rather than work he chose to live in a cave and kill and eat honest people. If anything the fact that Craven decided to base this story on this legend it suggests he was rooting for the victims rather than the cannibals.

Agreed. Plus, the “seemingly decent people” accidentally ended up there. It wasn’t like they went there to instigate or pillage. See, a core element of the 'White Savior' activism perspective is that it requires the internalizing of the concept of the 'noble savage'. You can't 'save a racial group from themselves' without first seeing them as lesser than you, in some very important ways. In this case, if you think that, for example, a racial or racially motivated activist group is incapable of acting in any way outside of horrific violence, and defend them by claiming said violence is justified? It does not change that you THINK THAT SAID GROUP IS INCAPABLE OF ACTING IN ANY WAY OUTSIDE OF HORRIFIC VIOLENCE. And that's the racism. That's the discrimination.

Especially considering how integral those scenes were in making the hills have eyes, last house on the left etc. so disturbing, and is a driving force in the plot - the Carter daughter being raped ramps up their desperation, stealing their infant daughter, the cannibal daughter rebelling against her family due to misogynistic abuse. The Hill people try to sexaully assault and kill people. I understand you don't like rich people but it comes off as overly bitter and less analytical. We don't have any proof from the film that the family is overly rich. And even if they were, unlike farmers and the lower class, the hill people contribute nothing to society meaning they aren't being taken advantage of by anyone. To also say that The Hill people represent minorities or other oppressed groups is also a huge stretch. I think it says a lot more about how you view marginalzed groups rather than what the film is depicting. I stopped at the Patreon ad and thought about unsubbing. But I'm going to stay because I really like your content and think you do a great job. Just not this vid.

I don’t disagree with the idea that the hill people are a metaphor for the lower class, but his claim that this is only represented in the original and not the remake is ridiculous. The intro alone shows this heavily. Not to mention the idea that he calls this horrifically violent film insensitive, but not because of the violent rape it features but because the hill people are featured with real life deformities. Like what kind of argument is that. If you want to call the movie bleak that’s fine, but it’s not mean spirited because an aspect of it was grounded in reality.

In case you care about how ridiculously off you are in terms of authorial intent, I had a chance to sit down with Wes Craven in 2009 (ironically shortly after the housing bubble crash at a very "eat the rich" moment in America). I asked him about the class warfare reading of Chainsaw Massacre, Hills Have Eyes, etc, and he absolutely lambasted the essay I was quoting. Said essay contained nearly exactly the paragraph on how the white overlords won because of a class traitor and how cruelty was somehow the point towards the hill people despite the clear and obvious self-defense going on. Craven stated in very absolute terms that none of that was in any way meant to be conveyed by his writing. in case you wanted to know.

Up until 2015 I'd have said go to a convention and ask him yourself. Sad that he's gone. In any case, I guess the answer to your question is of course, people can always lie, especially on the internet. All I've got to share is the experience. However, I do seem to remember that Craven had multiple interviews where he evidenced a very Tolkien-esque hatred of allegory and message beyond the story itself, so in a more general sense (and perhaps specifically, I haven't seen all his appearances), I think he's made his feelings clear on such.

Ah nah, you don’t get to play the whole moral relativism and say the visuals are akin to modern racial politics; thereby stating that any violence we see is inherently just, simply because the Other is rising against the conventional. If the audience can’t cheer for themselves because they’re actually the bad ones, while also uninterested in cheering for the Other, then why be invested at all?

I am so sick of content creators who try to fit woke ideology into everything---DESPITE THE FACT THAT WES CRAVEN NEVER SAID THAT THIS FILM WAS MEANT TO PORTRAY, RELATE TO NOR REPRESENT SUCH THINGS. Wanna know what Wes Craven himself said about this movie? Craven said of The Hills Have Eyes, “This picture has a lot of power. *It is all about family.* It is all about competition between the various generations-not wanting to be embarrassed in front of them, not wanting to expose them to something you think you are protecting them from. Competition between father and brother… *it was all about being a man.”* STRAIGHT OUTTA CRAVEN'S MOUTH. Nothing about race, class or any other social justice bullshit.

The difference between myself and the perpetually offended is the fact that I'm not calling for this Creator's cancellation. And who are you to try and be the arbiter of my emotions and intent? Nobody---that's who. Pointing out my "anger" (I was more irritated than angry but go off I guess) does *NOT* give you the moral high ground. My point was the creator inserted his own biased opinion onto a body of work that Craven created, and touting that this was Craven's intent--- despite what he has said about his intentions being the complete opposite of what the creator says about it. "iT's hIs oPiNioN, tHo." So? Just because it's someone's opinion doesn't mean it makes that someone's biases valid. It's one thing to express an opinion, it's another when you use said opinions and project onto those who never voiced those sentiments. That's more disrespectful than putting words in someone's mouth. Possibly worse, because everyone who buys that BS will not watch it get out of the movie the way Craven wanted it. And this type of content with these types of opinions is all over every form of media we love. Damn right I'm sick of it. Get over it and go clutch your pearls somewhere else.

People make choices, and the hill people chose to stay in the hills - chose to remain cannibals over leaving their land. That was their choice, a result of their own prerogative. Had the hill people opened up a dialogue with this traveling family, this family might have been able to send them help. They chose to eat the family instead. Cannibalism shouldn't be excused. Craven simply transposed the cannibal clan idea through space and time, to 70s America. All this political analysis is just to please film professors! It's not really what Wes Craven cared about. Wes Craven simply made a new people-eating Bean clan in America because it was a cool idea, scary. And he probably couldn't afford or be bothered to go to Scotland, so he just did it in America. No big political statement! Just making a good horror movie on the cheap, with scary legends borrowed from Britain.

Dude, I think you missed the point of The Hills Have Eyes. It's a story about an everyday American family who are brutally attacked by a vicious group of cannibals. Tada! I have no idea where you got your take from. The cannibals may THINK they're justified because of what has happened to them, but they're not. They're savage cannibals who rape and torture a family who accidentally end up crashed in the desert that they THINK they own because Jupiter ended up there because his Dad didn't want to deal with a vicious little monster. It's not nice, but he is a monster. I am actually amazed you made a link to marginalised groups and actually resort to victim blaming here. Honestly, its not cool. I understand interpretations, but the idea that this family is in anyway slightly or indirectly guilty or deserving of what happens because they're white and privileged is a pretty gross interpretation. The politics you're discussing has nothing to do with this film. And if it does - which I doubt - the creators did a fucking terrible job with it. Making the marginalised groups cannibal rapists? Yeah that's a great alagory. This is a poor take, dude. Sometimes horror isn't meant to have a message. Sometimes it's just creepy campfire ghost stories brought to life through the magic of cinema.
