As I've been exploring and investigating Catholicism for a little a year now, one of the most common comments that I receive is "the Catholic Church is more than the Latin Rite. You should visit an Eastern Catholic Church." Recently, I toured a Syro-Malabar Cathedral, a Catholic church with based in India, going all the way back to St Thomas the Apostle. This video is part two of that experience where I sit down with Fr. Joby to discuss the history of the syro-malabar church and what that means for the Catholic church today.

They’re not orthodox. They’re straight up catholic. They have all the catholic sacraments, they have all the catholic rituals, and they are also subject to the Pope in Rome, with an archbishop and a couple of bishops representing them in the Catholic Church. So they’re catholic as it gets. The only difference is just few ceremonies and traditions that are exclusive to the syro malabar church.

Though I belong to the Roman Rite, I have been attending the services at the Syro-Malabar Church and it's been a immense blessings. Catholic Church in India is alive and thriving because of to the traditions of St. Thomas.

Great video, the syro-malabar videos are some my favorite so far because this rite is so unknown in the west. This priest was so kind, I'm latin rite but I would love to go to a Syro-malabar Eucharist, their liturgy seems so rich from what he explained, no syro malabar here in French Canada but at least I get to learn from them on youtube. St Thomas is the saint I'm walking this year with. Thanks for making this videos!

Austin, a question you could ask Fr Joby for the enlightenment of the viewers is about the Charismatic movement in the Syro-Malabar Church. There is a great influence of the Charismatic movement in this Church probably more than in any other Catholic Church. Charismatic movement has an ecumenical perspectice and it is common for faithful from other Churches( non Catholic) to attend these retreats.. .

After his resurrection Christ gave the great commission to his Apostles (including Thomas) to go out into the world and proclaim the Good News (the Gospel) to all the nations. There is a strong reason to believe that Thomas, the Apostle of Christ evangelized in India. The reason for the Apostle Thomas to arrive in India was because of a Jewish community that lived on the Malabar coast. At least in some sections of the Jewish community in Israel the expectation in ancient times was that when the Mashiach (Hebrew for the Messiah or the Christ- the Anointed one) comes, as per the prophecies, the Mashiach would first proclaim his kingdom to the Jews and then to the Gentiles. It was therefore left to his disciples to take the Gospel further to the Jews and to the Gentiles beyond Judea. The coins recovered from excavations in Kerala (India) strongly support the idea of a flourishing Indian trade in spices with Arabia, Rome, China and other East Asian countries in the first century. Thomas obviously travelled the trade routes. It is reasonable to assume that Thomas started his ministry with the proclamation of the Messianic kingdom to Jews and then the natives. Early Christian writings of the third and fourth century about the missionary work in south eastern coast of India lend credence to the traditions that India had a strong Christian presence since the first century. Hymns of St. Ephrem (4th century), a beloved saint from Syria describes the martyrdom of Apostle Thomas in India. Eusebius of Caesaria (4th century), a church historian and Bishop, wrote in his book Ecclesiastical history that Pantaneus visited India in 180 AD and says that he found a Gospel of Matthew written in Hebrew, left with the Christians there by St. Bartholomew. St. Jerome in his writings mentions a deputation sent from India to Alexandria. This deputation requested Demetrius (127-232 AD), the bishop of Alexandria (Egypt), to send Clement of Alexandria (150 AD- 215 AD) to India. These writings point to a Christian community existing in the first and second centuries in Kerala (India). As per the traditions of the St. Thomas Christians, Thomas established seven churches in south India. Today there are above 4 million St. Thomas Christians belonging to various denominations (Syro-Malabar Catholic, Syro-Malankara Catholic, Syrian Orthodox, Jacobite, Mar Thoma Church etc) in South India. Cosmas the Monk was a Greek merchant from Alexandria of Egypt who wrote in his travelogue (Cosmas Indicopleustes ) about his travel to India in the 6th-century during the reign of emperor Justinian. In 522 AD, he visited the Malabar Coast (South India) and was the first traveller to mention Suriyani Christians in present-day Kerala in India. He wrote, "In the Island of Taprobane (Ceylon), there is a church of the Christians, and clerks and faithful. Likewise at Malé where the pepper grows; and in the town of Kalliana (Maharashtra). The present Day Kalyan where Comas used to rule, there is also a bishop consecrated in Persia." The apocryphal Acts of Judas Thomas narrate Thomas, the Apostle, travelling to the court of Gondophares I, the Indo-Parthian ruler. From archeological findings in Taxila (Pakistan) Gondophares ruled from 19 to 46 AD. In the excavated Palace of Gondophores, the guide at the place point out, that in addition to Jain and Buddhist worship places in the area there is also a baptismal font which Thomas would have used for his conversions. This suggests the route Thomas would have taken from Jerusalem to Persia and finally into India through Taxila (Pakistan).

What the priest kindly meant was that every Catholic is welcome to this church to take communion, as we are all linked to the central part of the mass, which is the eucharist, as well as the sacraments. But being part of a church also means understanding the liturgy, and for Roman Catholics this can be quite confusing. If by chance a Roman Catholic feels welcome in the Syro-Malabar community, then it would be better for him to go through the community's catechism to understand the liturgy, as the catechism also includes teachings about the liturgy of that tradition. But in the central core we are one church.

Joby talks about the text for the hymn "Let all mortal flesh keep silence" being in Syriac. Is it sung in Syriac or Malayalam, in the Syro-Malabar (East Syriac) Rite or in the West Syriac Rite churches of Kerala? The hymn seems to be originally from the Liturgy of Saint James, the principal liturgy of the West Syriac rite. Can anyone help me find the text in Syriac or Malayalam?

While it's all the great past, reailty is that the kerala christian community is dying. The Protestant funded by west was converting a lot for sometime but now more than that the population is in -ve growth by all govt census. There are more than 1 lakh unmarried men over 30 in syro malabar catholic itself. If other Syrian demoninations like jacobite/orthodox is also considered it would easily go up 3 lakh plus. When this is the situation, many christian women are marrying hindu and muslim men leaving the community. The modern outlook and the spread of atheism all fueled by west is hurting christian community most. So it's good to hear this great past and all when the present statistics is that the community will be totally vanished from kerala in next 100-200 years with the current -ve population growth.

Hopefully it will continue tolive somewhere else. Most of the places Paul evangelised are muslim now... But the church still exists in other places. Europeans used to send missionaries to africa. Now Africa is sending priests to europe. This tradition will have to continue to live somewhere else to survive.

@@julianaq7633If any place is there then Kerala is the only place that the community has favourable circumstances to stay strong and has the base of around 2000 years history. We are seeing way too much migration happening to western countries which are permanent migrations, super low birth rates, this high number of unmarried men and women marrying to other religions in huge numbers making the community go extinct in near future. Until few years back not just worldwide but within india too if syro malabars move out of the state of Kerala, they used to join near by latin parish. In fact within india, a lot of latin churches and dioceses got established like that. Now all these generations and the folks who move to western countries mostly adapt western lifestyle of atheism and a lot even marry random people and leave the community. No new members come to the church when in western countries even the western churches that were there since long itself are dead. Hindus and Muslims are encouraged more in the western countries and also they stay within community a lot unlike christians and the west also in general has the ambience that Christianity is bad while Hinduism and Islam is great. Even the Portuguese who came in 15th century tried to latinize and the coonan cross oath protest happened which itself is why syrian christians got split into all these denominations like today. So how does the tradition have anymore chance of surviving than in Kerala which has better atmosphere? Even in there the realities that I mentioned are leading to extinction of community in future. A late syro malabar bishop of a diocese, mar anikuzhikattil once said the blind aping of western culture is leading to destruction of kerala christians. It is somewhat true though many good things were adopted much more bad things from protestantism to individualism and atheism that spread is only leading to decimation of Christianity. So that's why community being extinct from Kerala is huge risk.

This is all within a relatively minor sup-topic of the video-the main take-away of the video being the Glory of God at work through and being revealed in the Syro-Malabar Catholic tradition and what that means and how we should relate to it- but I wanted to bring it up since it can be educational. Unless I’m mistaken… Patriarchal Catholic Churches, unlike Major Archiepiscopal Catholic Churches, do not need Rome to approve the Bishops, the Church sui juris appoints them themselves. Or is it just their Patriarch? Or am I missing something? I know my Church, the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church has desired the rights and privileges of a recognized Patriarchate for a long time, so much so that we call our Major Archbishop “Patriarch”, since the law says that he has all the rights and privileges of a Patriarch unless otherwise stated in law. I heard that the role of “Major Archbishop” was kind invented on the fly in the last century for ecumenical expedience, so as not to offend other communities and Churches the Catholic Church is in dialogue with while at the same time allowing for some more independence of our Churches as is fitting. …of course Rome maintains some measure of control in the Major Archiepiscopal Churches especially by the appointment of Bishops so that the Pope can steer our Churches as Rome would like to help with reconciliation with the alienated Apostolic Churches whose Sacraments we recognize. That’s why there’s talk that maybe we’ll get full Patriarchal status with many setbacks and maybe some bridges being burned with the Russian Orthodox Church since the invasion of Ukraine (I say maybe because we don’t know what internal turmoil and implications might happen within the ROC and within the Orthodox Churches in general with what is happening, first with the Schism, and now with the invasion of the very canonical territory in dispute within Orthodoxy that led to the current Schism… though at the end of the day, the Pope may simply give us Patriarchal status as our credibility goes up as we had long been accused of overstating the very real threat of Moscow’s political ambitions and the ROC’s claims in Ukraine, and with our having possibly earned a Fully-recognized Patriarchate by the blood of all our martyrs for Christ and our level of organization and service to the whole Catholic Church and its ecumenical intentions in Ukraine and abroad). … The main reason I’m mentioning this is that Rome has committed to step back in its level of control in different Eastern Churches definitely at least upon if not by the time of large-scale institutional reunification with our separated brothers and sisters who yet remain faithful to Christ - which is the long-term plan for the Catholic Church as we sort through the issues that have divided us in the past. If the UGCC gets full Patriarchal status… I wonder if the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church would be far behind? When we were elevated to the just-invented Major Archiepiscopal status (kind of a “You are on this Council, but we do not grant you the rank of Master” moment, only with less hostility than Anakin responded with [I’m such a nerd…]), so was the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church… so it follows that their elevation to Patriarchal status might follow ours as well. …If I’m misinformed on anything here -especially as regards the nature and canonical rights of Major Archiepiscopal and Patriarchal Catholic Churches-someone please correct me. I grew up Reformed Protestant (in the Southern Baptist Convention), and was received into the Ukrainian Catholic Church a couple years ago, so I’m still learning a lot about how all our Churches work. …but I do know that the goal is not to have the Pope running everything, but rather to raise up and empower the Churches to be fully what God intends and unleashing us for the mission of making God known, and making His greatness and goodness known so that as many as possible might drawn unto Him and find healing, forgiveness, and fullness of life in Him… What God desires our Churches to be is the Sacrament of His Self-Revelation to the world, being His Hands and Feet, gateways of His Grace and Mercy shining resplendently on and bringing life and healing and reconciliation to a world in need. Every Particular Church (Church sui juris), to which its members remain ascribed no matter where they are in the world, is called to “make disciples of all nations”, further reconciling different peoples together into visible unity in Christ in legitimate and holy diversity, even a living spiritual body and organism. The Glory of God will be known, and we get to be a part of that, as different cultures are caught up into (elevated into) the Divine Life in diverse and numerous ways on the earth in the life of actual Churches in space and time. Christ became Incarnate, and we really do meaningfully become united to His Body and are grafted into His Life. May this Mystery be ever more fully realized and revealed to the world, to the praise and glory of the Name of God.

The architecture of the church is off. According to Syro Malabar tradition, there Madbaha(Alter) should be veiled. Plus there should be a Nilavilakku( A ceremonial lamb) present.

At my church in Sacramento we had a catholic priest from India. After mass one day I asked him about these st Thomas Christians. I asked if they had the Holy Eucharist as the real presence as Catholics do today. He said yes,!of course.naturally I could not interview him further since he was very suspicious at my asking. As if I was accusing st Thomas Christians as not being catholic in ways of the sacraments and communion and the saints.

By me asking if church from India was close to Catholics and orthodox this would strengthen tradition that holy Eucharist is the real presence of Christ and unlike what Protestants think who invalidated many Christian tenets from Reformation times. To this day Protestants think it’s just Catholics That believe in the real body of Christ, saints etc. my point was to establish that all original Christian communities in world were like Catholics.

False history.. Chaldean church was established in 1553 AD. There was no Chaldean church in Kerala. There was only affiliation to Syriac church of Antioch. False history.. Chaldean church was established in 1553 AD. There was no Chaldean church in Kerala. There was only affiliation to Syriac church of Antioch. Portuguese and Western Catholics twisting and rewriting history to make themselves look better. syro Malabar church itself suffered so much under the Portuguese. This is the reality.
