Vivienne Westwood has also been very popular in Tokyo fashion the past couple decades. The rocking horse shoe, purses, and orb necklaces have been classics in Tokyo way before they were ever seen on Bella Hadid.

I loooove fashion history youtube. I feel like when i was growing up fashion was seen as a really shallow thing to care about, like it was a "mean girl" thing. But seeing amazing people on youtube talk about fashion history, how it reflects who's going on in society, and how it can do a lot of personal expression, has really made me happy.

I’m honestly kind of in love with the younger generations because of how diverse the fashion is. There’s so much revival of older fashion with contemporary flair and so many different styles to choose from (Y2K, goth, punk, VSCO, etc) that it makes me really happy to see everything get its rightful appreciation and time to shine

I also love how these aesthetics and style subcultures are no longer being viewed as “odd”. Like no one would find it weird to see a person dress entirely in vintage/vintage inspired clothing. It kind of makes fashion trends more unpredictable, which I find more exciting!

That's because all the younger generation does is follow whatever is trendy and hot at the moment. There's nothing distinctive or innovative about this generation/era hence recycling/copying everything. This shouldn't come as a surprise but it's honestly annoying, especially to those that are part of a subculture like the goths, punks, and those who love vintage clothes, and always genuinely loved it and see how it's being treated as a trendy thing for ig aesthetics and tiktok clout when they used to be mocked and seen as 'weird' is pretty much a slap in the face
@chaaaargh

@@per_se_phone but at the same time, yes it's annoying, but what about us in this younger generation who have also always loved vintage clothes, older subcultures and styles, you act like everyone is just copying whereas there are actually young people who loved these styles before they were trendy, but i digress.

Maybe to some. To me, pearls are the little black dress of jewelry though. Not flashy, not innovative, but always a good choice. Certainly I would say that no jewelry box should be without at least one strand of pearls. I also love faux pearls or pieces that mix pearls with other things. I have a very Vivienne Westwood-esque piece that has a red velvet ribbon through a silver chain, with a pearl strand attached. I’ve worn it both as a necklace and a belt. Might even be Westwood for all I know, I acquired it second-hand. I also have a string of silver “pearls”, which I got for babysitting when I was in High School. They are perfect for times when it would be gauche to wear fake pearls but you don’t want to risk real ones (which can be damaged by anything the slightest bit acidic, stained by ordinary items such as chocolate, and easily crushed unwittingly).

I guess one reason people aren't so keen on pearl jewellery is that pearls can often be seen as very "old lady" same happens with the like of Chanel No5 so many people view that as something only old ladies wear. Personally I adore pearls.

thanx everyone for the contribution!! the video and other comments really made me feel abit singular so its noice that its not just me. yall real cool and real tasteful 💕✨ tbh this video has me thinking abt pearls and what it meant to me despite in actuality i don't really see it explicitly or even owned any myself (yet) personally/handed as heirlooms. But i've seen them in cosmetics, in olden paintings of beautiful women, old jewellery of higher class peranakan chinese, ming dynasty style furniture.. so maybe in some recess of my mind it was silently an aesthetic that made itself at home and i find myself favouring pearls or faux pearls heavily when it comes to personal jewellery. its very minimal and effortlessly elegant without being obnoxious like big diamonds or gold. and where i live in the world, we have pearl producers as well so the certified and locally produced pearls kinda adds to the allure. bless yall

I feel like the reason why Gen Z love nostalgic fashion is probably a combination of one, growing up in the technology boom where everything is new new new, so of course young people want the opposite. And two because of the rise in sustainable fashion, fashion influencers feel they should be promoting more second hand and eco pieces, which obviously will have a “vintage” style. I wonder if all this nostalgia with 70s, 90s and y2k being so in trend, maybe in 2025 we see a huge demand for futuristic fashion???
@alicegonzalez4997

it is also because of the political climate, for example, right now we have a good number of gen-z being anti-capitalist and protesting for social justice, expressing sexuality, advocating for the environment, just like the 60's, which is the fashion time period which is really in

saying english fashion while showing a load of tartan seems like a bit of a miss considering the yikes history between the two countries and that tartan is usually so associated with scotland, not england, but i really am glad you covered this topic. i love vivienne westwood and your fashion analysis is always so well done!

it's also very important to distinguish that english =/= british, so if you meant general british fashions it'd be better to say that. england oppressed scotland and wales (and ireland), so making sure there isn't misunderstanding about what countries you mean (or if you mean the uk) is really important. not trying to be hateful, just wanted to point this out!

I have always really wanted to own one of those pearl chokers, but then for me the fact it's become such a hyped piece that ever "influencer" or "wannabe influencer" owns it puts me off buying one. I've always loved how Vivienne pays with the past with her designs, and often finds a way of incorporating the more punk and fetish side into it as well.

i remember reading tons of japanese streetstyle magazines in the early 00's and that the VW logo was so prominent in almost every look. seeing as how i can see a sort of trickle down of looks i saw in fruits in 2002 today, i won't be surprised if we see more of the logo like you said. even a few years back the VW SEX era had a small resurgence in accessories....

When you mentioned that part about Tiffany not wanted to alienate their older and wealthy buyers due the popularity of their affordable heart necklaces among teens, I couldn't help but roll my eyes. anyway, vivienne westwood has been my favourite fashion designer since freshmen year in art school. I found her work on tumblr and completely fell in love with it! It even made me believe that someday I too could be a fashion designer. But oh well. When you have time, I'd appreciate if you made more videos about her history, work and the influence that it had during those decades (c.80-90-00s). Or just a short video with your favourite items from the brand.

As a punk who's into fashion, I really struggle with my interest in the fashion industry. I appreciate the origins of Vivian Westwood, but at the end, didn't she end up enforcing the same standards as everyone else? Yeah you can mix high and low end fashion, but the models walking in your runway are still tall, thin, and mostly white. Your prices aren't affordable for the working class and feeds into the exclusivity of fashion. The brand is just another part of the establishment now - promoting the same kind of beauty, for a price only the elites can afford.

She literally capitalized from punk that's supposed to be a rebel of a working class and I'm in love-hate relationship with her because making underground into mainstream and beings so contradicting to her own message yet she still did a brave thing when we compare her work to other designers of the time idk I respect her but I'm not sure that I like how punk went from car paint hair dying and leather boots for work to pearl necklace, 100€ hairstyles and 200€ Doc marteens

considering its roots are as an alt fashion brand i think it will always appeal to alt subcultures, so even if it hadn't been popularized by celebs it would've been popular there (and with tiktok it would've inevitably trickled into the mainstream regardless)

vivienne westwood has been popular in japan among consumers for a while, and is frequently featured in street snaps in shibuya its just trickle down asian trends. it was even popular enough to be in a few anime like nana which lead to a huge trend in punk styling there using a lot of vivienne.

I am obsessed with VW, I first found out about it when reading Nana. I related to the show so much as I play guitar and took the loner vibe from Nana. I wanted clothing like her and became obsessed with the orb lighter necklace. That’s when my loophole of VW began. I have 17 items from last year and currently just bought the 1980s pearl three layer neck in silver. It’d going to be my prom statement outfit.
