God I love vocaloid. I could talk about it for hours, I could listen to it for hours, learn about it for hours, exist within this world of possibilities and infinite opportunities and never ending potential for creation for all time.

I share this exact sentiment! The possibilities for vocaloid are endless! Anyone can be a creator and there are no bounds to art people make with it!

Miku is absolutely my favorite character ever and she deserve all the worldwide love she gets. My favorite thing about her is just how versatile she is-- anyone can make any song they want with her and there are hundreds of different designs of her, but you can always tell it's miku!! I was never a big vocaloid fan until the last couple years, but listening to vocaloid songs and animations was my favorite pastime when i was growing up. She can be anything you want, and that's something very unique and special to me!

WORDS TRULY WON’T EVER BE ENOUGH TO DESCRIBE THE RANGE OF FEEL I HAVE FOR VOCALOID. IT’S SUCH A DEEPLY FASCINATING CONCEPT AND WORLD TO ME, AND I’M SO GLAD I’VE BEEN ABLE TO EXPERIENCE IT IN MY LIFETIME. I WELL AND TRULY DO NOT KNOW WHERE I WOULD BE WITHOUT VOCALOID, AS I CONSIDER IT PRETTY MUCH A PART OF MY IDENTITY WITH HOW MUCH IT SHAPED MY TASTES AND LIKES AND HOBBIES. I CONSIDER I OWE HATSUNE MIKU AND YAMAHA AND ALL THESE WONDERFUL ARTISTS AND CREATORS MY LIFE AND I WILL THANK THIS SOFTWARE THIS, THIS COMMUNITY FOR EXISTING TILL THE END OF MY DAYS.

This video is so well made I was honestly surprised to see how underrated it is. It's a really good introduction to vocaloid for people who don't know much about it ^^

For real, I only thought of it as a synthetic robotic voice and couldn't really understand the aesthetics behind the vocals. But explaining the consumerist aspect of it and how it assist artists, musicians and collaborations really helped me understand that Miku is just a face for a literal software that produces a synthetic voice. I thought it was only for songs, hence my confusion when people cosplayed or draw her worldwide. But when she explained that the Vocaloid company made it usable by anyone, aka, no copyright it made more sense to me. Also, the Nyan cat was a nice example - it's a childhood favorite of mine. I used to play it with my Mother in bed, and as she is very adversed to Japanese media (anime, manga, etc.) it's nice knowing that the Nyan cat would not have been complete without the software itself. Also, I literally thought Hatsune Miku wasn't completely digital at one point when I saw glimpses of the concerts online. I thought it was owned by one person, maybe even a company so that was a misleading thought. This KZbinr explaining that Hatsune Miku is basically a mascot for a Vocaloid software just..clicked.

Thank you for making this video. With vocaloid and hatsune miku being as popular as they are you would think more videos explaining the history, how these virtual idols came to be and how their program and licensing works and such, would exist, but it was rather hard to find one quite honestly. So, thank you

Amazing video! I love how you went through Vocaloid's development history and how you explained the open character license Miku has. A minor correction/explanation for 21:14, in the Vocaloid EULA it states that you have to put the name of the voicebank being used in the work. It doesn't explicitly say the title of the work though and it by no means invalidates your point. I think it's just become common practice to put the VB name in the title specifically. Again, your point still very much stands with how the songs get attributed to the Vocaloid and not the actual artist who made the song. I also think people are more inclined to click on/listen to a song sung by their favorite Vocaloid. I am one of those people who was very inspired to create art thanks to Vocaloid, and it's always nice to see people talk about the human part of Vocaloid. If it weren't for Miku, I probably wouldn't have gotten into 3D modeling/animation and music production!

I think the robotic and ai sounding voice adds a lot of character and uniqueness to the songs where vocal lids are used. People often listen to vocal lid songs specifically for the robotic vocals. At least that’s why I listen to it :)

As a veteran vocaloid lover, if you don't credit the artist, we'll often cold shoulder you. Also, it's really time to stop the misinformation that she's always underage, she's not. Miku is whatever you want her to be, and tbh, the more adult songs really don't portray her physically as she appears in her original form. Yes, she's sexualized, and yes, many people sexualize the underage version of her bc they're fkn sick in the head, but this narrative from non veteran consumers that these characters are always rigidly a specific age or in specific relation to each other is getting really old. There's no canon anything because EVERYTHING is canon about Miku. Genuinely every single song is technically canon; we wouldn't have old lady Miku if this wasn't true, which we do. It doesn't make me angry or anything, but it's very disheartening to see a lot of people being introduced to vocaloid with blatant misinformation.

It's a goated video but I have one question. ARE YOU TELLING ME SOMEONE ACUALLY MARRIED A 16 YO FICTIONAL CHARACTER AND NO ONE SAYS NOTHING? Like, how is that legal? Another time, very well explained, I now know lot of new things about vocaloid that I didn't.

miku doesn’t actually have a fixed age, race, gender etc. but i will say that guy recently came on twt saying he married her with the intention of her being 16 so it’s definitely odd in that aspect…

They where marketed to wrong people because professionals have access to professional singers. amateurs do not. If not gifted singer recording your self it a pain because how much work goes into try make it fit with the music.. How ever vocaloid would not get good until v3 for English. synth vocals got even better with AI tuning with a program called synth v but it still amateurs make up majority of usa market and its still small. Hate how expensive vocaloid has become and making the hobby expensive. That what I like about synthv it is cheaper.
