For these games, you typically had to shoot off the screen to reload your gun. One trick was to hold the gun in such a way so that you could cover the front with your finger while pulling the trigger, reloading the gun on the spot.

This arcade cabinet was absolutely everywhere. Easily one of the most common 90's arcade games found. I really loved Area 51 back when it came out, and I did buy the PS1 port when that released. However, I did not have the Konami Justifier. Toys R' Us (where I bought Area 51 at) had the MadCatz "Fazor" for sale to go along with the game. As bad as the Fazor looked, it actually performed good enough to get the job done, and was compatible with both the PS1 and the Saturn.

I had come home on leave to visit family after being in Germany for a year. During a trip to the mall I ducked into an arcade to play a few games and this was one of them. As we went inside we passed a Marine recruiter who was trolling for possible recruits. I settled into this game and tore it a new asshole. The recruiter noticed and was ready to hand me a business card when my mom stopped him. "Sorry gunny, the Army got him already." The Marine smiled, hung his head and moved to his next target.

Loved this game. Was one of my go to games whenever I was at any arcade, if they had it. It had so many power ups, bonus, and bonus stages that I never had the same experience twice.

Great vid as always, ty! I always loved hearing the screams of the dying aliens across the arcade or movie theater.

This game is at my local arcade! Play the hell out of them back in the day. Hell of a lot of fun

I owned this game on the PS1 when I was a kid and played it 100's of 1000's of times! Makes me super nostalgic. A local old school arcade bar near where I live, Pinky's Revenge in Taylors, SC, has an Area51 machine and it was the first time I played it in on an arcade. Brought back memories, as did your video. Thanks for this in depth look at the history of it!

I haven't thought about "There is currently a line for Time Crisis" in years! This is a serious blast of nostalgia.

Loved playing this and Maximum Force at Laser Quest (now closed) while we were waiting for our turn to go in.

This was in the arcade of my college campus back in the day. I couldn't play it as much as I would have liked, but it was so interesting that I'd stand there between classes and watch others give it a go.

Awesome doc! I used to play this constantly at the local bowling alley. I would love a bit of low volume background music behind the main audio of the video to give a bit of atmospheric pacing to go along with the great video content. I just subscribed and I can't wait to see more!

Where I lived, this wasn’t a game u typically saw at the arcade. You always would find them at movie theaters.

This games was so much fun. I spent a lot of time trying to find all the secret rooms. I always wondered if it influenced Resident Evil, STAARS vs STARS as well as a few other similarities.
