In the Street Fighter games, Zangief is a good guy. He was a villain in "Street Fighter: The Movie" and describes himself as a bad guy in the movie "Wreck-It Ralph". In any canon Street Fighter game he's on the hero side and quite friendly...when he's not hurting you...and sometimes when he is.
@Triknor

Yeah, the whole villain thing in Wreck-It Ralph never made much sense to me. I never saw Zangief as a “bad guy”.

@casanovafunkenstein5090

Yeah, he's also likely to be inspired by a guy called Victor Zangiev (pronounced Zang-Ee-Ev. Not certain if it's a spelling mistake due to someone not being sure how the name was spelled after hearing it spoken, or if it's for avoiding lawsuits for unauthorised use of his image. Kind of like how Mike from SF1 isn't the boxer from the sequel, even though M.Bison could easily be Mike Bison, causing them to swap the names around internationally and call him Balrog) Zangiev was a wrestler from the Soviet Union who was signed to New Japan Pro Wrestling in 1989. The thing to remember about depictions of the Soviet Union is that not every country was as hostile to them as the US. Japan would have had a complicated relationship with them, being on opposing sides in the war, but given the damage done by the refusal of the military to admit defeat (which would have prevented the nukes from being dropped on them and would have saved a lot of people from dying unnecessarily) and the imposed US occupation of the country making significant changes to their cultural norms and work lives there was a very significant amount of communist sympathy within the Japanese population. (the whole thing about Japanese companies utterly dominating the lives of the employees to the point where they never see their families, feel shamed for taking a holiday and collapse dead in their mid 30s after doing 6 months of 15 hour days. All brought over by an American Banker named Joseph Dodge, who was an advisor to General MacArthur. MacArthur had previously overseen work to protect the right for workers to form unions, granted the unions the permission to go on strike during a national dispute, had put into law that working conditions required that the health and wellbeing of the employees to be protected, so that they could live a decent standard of life. Looking into MacArthur himself I can see that he was born into a military family where his father was an officer, with him also being groomed for a leadership role. I don't think it would be sensible to try and infer his political opinions from his upbringing and actions during occupation. When it comes down to it he was there to help Japan recover stability enough for US corporate interests to turn it into a cheap source of labour and goods. As a military man he likely was just focusing on what would actually make it possible for the country to rebuild and would reduce the resistance to occupation. One could argue that the laws preceding the arrival of Dodge were a clever tactic: if the occupation didn't improve workers' rights then they would never gain legitimacy or favour with the largest part of the population. With unions being legally recognized, and the rolling out of new workplace protections, their energies are going to be put towards holding their employers to account)

One day in the late 80s my parents took us to Toys R Us and let my brother and I pick out one game. The game we picked was Karnov, and we played the heck out of it. Never could beat it, but it was still fun to play and that music can certainly get stuck in your head. I didn't know there was an arcade version of Karnov until much later, and when I discovered the NES version had a crappy ending, I was retroactively mad at Nintendo. lol

I discovered Karnov when I was a child on Amstrad CPC, I played it a lot. A few years later, I played Chelnov in Arcade and I associated these two games in my mind for their "bizarre universe". It then took me a few years of maturity (and emulation) to understand why. Thank you Mr Patman for all these memories ;-)

I always thought Karnov was the dude who fought Indiana Jones in The Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) But he didn't blow fire. I bet if he did then that fight might have ended a different way! I've not played this at the Arcades, but I did gravitate towards it due to the art work on the NES! Karnov is so iconic on the cover standing there with Dinosaurs all around! In my opinion the BEST NES Box Cover Art period. That box alone is what sold this game! I saw plenty of kids begging there parents to buy it at stores when I was growing up!

The NES version of Karnov was one of those games I always wanted to play back in the day but never did since I didn't know anyone that owned it and the Hogan's Video near me never had it available to rent. For a relatively early NES release it's not a bad game. I never did play the arcade version or any of the home computer ports so thank you for this video!

Karnov could certainly benefit from a modern remake or sequel, if only to make use of the shoulder buttons on a modern controller for cycling through items. 😉 Also, when Karnov was made to look more Asian in later appearances, it gave me the impression that he was meant to be a Mongolian-Russian.

I actually remember renting this game back in the day, I think I was 8 at the time and I remember looking at it but I wasn't sure but some other games were rented out that I wanted so I was stuck with Karnov. I didn't like it at first but the game grew on me that I actually went to Toys r Us and bought the game a few weeks later.

Only one of the arcades in my town (we had at most 3 at one time) had this game and only for a brief period so I never got very far in it. Had to spread my quarters around on other games as well.

Beat this game on the good ol NES! It was a tough playthrough, but a lot of fun! I remember keeping the game paused for sleep and school because it took me a couple days to get through it. LOL... Those were the days back in the 80s. 😊
