in the video u were wondering why we used anime gifs along with future funk tracks and its because at the time yung bae and macross were sampling 80s/70s japanese city pop tracks and i thought it only made sense to use retro anime as the visual and we thought that using gifs would stand out from the crowd since no other music channel was really doing that at the time
@DaydreamDeluxe4 жыл бұрын
Ahhhhh that makes sense! Thanks for clarifying that, Artzie! Appreciate you! 😁
@Cargo_Bay4 жыл бұрын
Definitely trendsetters! Some of the biggest vapor/futurefunk tracks have a single gif that is attached to its upload on youtube that people forever associate it with. I can't listen to "Better" without having the Alfonso Ribeiro gif in my head! And other people do the same thing when they upload random tracks too
@IconicMicrowave4 жыл бұрын
To me, the music always sounded like something you'd hear in the anime too. I watch a tons of old anime and they always use 80's/90's city pop, dance pop, rock, disco, etc. as the soundtrack, so hearing the music kind of paints the old anime picture in my head. The gifs capture it really well.
@IceQueen9754 жыл бұрын
In addition, a lot of what we now call City Pop was used in the opening and ending theme songs of animes in the 80s. It's why if you listen to old 80s anime ops, they sound so similar to city pop. Because it IS city pop! So using anime gifs from that time period specifically is a nod to the city pop roots future funk has.

The first time I encountered future funk, I was confused, it felt so familiar but also different, however I really liked it. After a while I started to look for the original tracks, since then, I really appreciate some of the old music. I would have never tough I would be interested in such. Some Future funk tracks are vastly superior over the originals, while other tracks aged like fine wine. Really curious how everything develops and how it will be in 20 years from now. Everything I know, we should keep being optimistic, positive and euphoric, just like future funk is.

I just want to add to your last bit, about the evolution of genres in general. I hope future funk evolves in it’s current trajectory. I was really into Psy trance in the early to late 2000s, but that genre’s artists became too commercial in order to attract a larger audience, such as Infected Mushroom. In my opinion they were too late to break into the larger EDM scene as it was already crowded. I hope that the artists continue to evolve away from the allure of the commercial stage. My hope that it will stay strong as music movements are far more democratized now than it was in the 2000s. I mean, who could have predicted the ridiculous popularity of LoFi.

Great vid! Love the long form, video essay format. Pad and Pinkas shed more light on what really IS futurefunk from past vids, but you definitely filled in the gaps in an all-in-one presentation. I now finally know wtf Artzie is (just know of its association with Discoholic, but never noticed they mostly started the trend of the simply using a looping gif with the vapor/FF tracks. In the future, it'd be rad if you did similar vids on history of Lo-Fi and Outrun (which seems to have the same issue with distinguishing itself from regular synthwave the way futurefunk does from french house or even vaporwave).

I credit Onra as the godfather of future funk with his 2010 album Long Distance, followed by 2012 EP Deep in the Night. He could have been influenced by the modern funk scene going on at the time but on those albums, he chopped up 80s funk and soul Dilla-style to create hip hop, vaporwave, future funk masterpieces.

vaporwave and future funk born in tumblr as a political satira (video musical meme); as a joke but well fundamented in anti capitalism movement. In tumblr live the ultra left comunist-anarchists from US people and otaku people (manly latinamerican); and remember tumblr is the social network of artist, .....The vaporwave are the US people version (artistic anti capitalist movement); the future funk are the otaku people version. They are styles brothes, one not descendet of other. Imagine the typical greek statue of vapor wave and sailormoon shake his hands and both say: we must destroy capitalism.......it´s the 60´s verision of movement hippies and its music

Future funk definitely focuses more on melody and on re-purposing samples rather just looping a sample segment around a beat as the song structure that French house does. The beat accents the melody in future funk and is usually introduced later in the song, not as the first thing you hear. Plus, French house songs are typically longer since they're made to be house-oriented club-based music. Tempos are often slower too. The imagery is more in-line with vaporwave in future funk. Future funk spawned out of vaporwave subgenres, not house. It just implemented house beats and and some production techniques. The earliest future funk was just upbeat vaporwave that sampled funky stuff. You could argue that some future funk is French house though, or made by French house producers such as Agrume, Hunter, Skibblez, Unibeat, or DJ EQ, but artists like Saint Pepsi, MACROSS 82-99, Yung Bae, Desired, Night Tempo, and proto-stuff like Teams and Topaz Gang came from or are vaporwave. Plus the genre and artists have evolved over time and added new influences or adopted more elements from other genres.
