Bravo, and thank you for this retrospective. Evangelion impacted (no pun intended) me like no other anime, to the point of obsession. I became a Gainax completionist, buying everything from Royal Space Force to Gurren Lagann, even titles like His and Her Circumstances and Petite Princess Yucie which I wouldn't have otherwise noticed if not for Gainax's involvement. It's a shame that the studio couldn't sustain its youthful creative fire or even simply avoid crippling dysfunction. But they created some of the most original and influential content, and their alumni continue to make their mark on the industry.

Long comment incoming!: 1. I feel that this whole era was a "twilight" where talented artists and storytellers were at the right time and the right moment for some controlled chaos without anime becoming mainstream and with the digital era still at its infancy, and personally, in a world where I could be passionate about "cars", being able to experience this twilight of ideas about human nature and images blending together beautifully makes me feel lucky to have my eyes open to the twilight, almost as if I were dreaming awake when I hear that song. 2. The only idea I disagree with you is, not surprisingly I guess, that Gainax's golden era ended before Evangelion. I understand that the friends who founded weren't there anymore, but maybe that chaos was needed in order for Anno to take the spotlight with others such as Tsurumaki, and to create their own masterpiece. 3. I hope you explore more artists and studios! Personally the other artists who make me dream awake are Miyasaki and Mamoru Hosoda, I would love to hear about them from you but honestly whatever makes you passionate too, because we can see that passion in these videos! 4. What a quality video, it was my best christmas present and I've been watching non-stop. I notice the effort put into the deep dive that only someone who is passionate about the topic can bring. Tik tok or wikipedia cannot give us this gem of a series. 5. I have some new backlog to watch after your suggestions in previous videos (Ebichu, Flcl , gunbuster) and I loved Abenobashi and a part of Nadia. In the meantime I wonder if there is a community where people discuss these topics? or maybe a discord? The twilight keeps happening when I see series such as Frieren presenting interesting ideas and would love to know what people think. I can search on my own in any case. 6. Thank you! These videos have been amazing!

Ya know, I was wondering how long this series would end up being, but I certainly didn't bank on you releasing the equivalent of like 4 episodes of material all at once to wrap it up. Great stuff, I think this has finally eclipsed the Gaming in the Clinton Years retrospective as my favorite content of yours.

Honestly I prefer the early 2000's anime artstyle to the more boring artstyle we get now for most anime.

90s for me. Anime was known to be bold but even shonen looks moeblobs today.

There are few things that I feel more intense nostalgia for than early 2000s Adult Swim. It was like a window into whole new world. So cool that it could breathe life into FLCL.

On the note of Pied Piper, there's a reupload of the playthrough on KZbin (the same one you used in footage) that has translated captions! It's a really enjoyable way to experience that game's plot.

I wonder if you have a similar experience to me whenever you replay the series-- Every time I beat Xenosaga 1, there's an excitement to the beginning of Episode 2! I'm like "Yes, new pastures! New presentation! The next chapter!" When that opening cutscene plays and the Old Miltia (14 Years Ago) theme starts up (especially given the lack of music in Episode 1), it's SO HYPE For just that one moment, when that beat drops, I live in the world where Xenosaga Episode 2 is the best game I've ever played. It, uhh... well, you know, I don't live in that world. Reality comes back quicker than one would like (I swear, you blink and suddenly you're in Subconscious Domain fighting those awful ghoul enemies and you're about ready for a break), but it's something that happens to me every time nonetheless. and the music's still pretty good

This is a fantastic series. I didn't even know about Money Wars! I had to rewatch to see if I blinked and missed mention of Battle Mode. It was a 1990 Gainax-produced CM made for an anime shop called Parody. Gainax released it on home video (padding the CM variants with a making-of short) and the cover sleeve can briefly be seen behind Tanaka-kun when he's explaining how "garage video" can work. I only saw it due to some old contacts having deep tape-trading connections that would make Tanaka's circle proud!

Don't think their is a connection for Medena tbh. It is city that the prophet migrated with his followers and its the first muslim city, he was born in Mecca his dad died when his mother Anima was pregnant and became an orphan at the age of 6. He started to spread word about Islam but after a while had to flee because a stronger tribe Qurash was threatening them. He and his followers left, also his uncle was with them and went to Medena. Might mean somethin if we know more about Medena but we dont know much about her.

Shaytan can be referred as satan but there is more meaning to it, it means evil being or troublemaker. An evil being that push a person away from faith and obedience to Allah. He seeks to exploit weaknesses, tempt individuals into sin, and sever their connection to Allah. Just more information on shaytan for those who are interested. Actually wanted to add this story about Iblis which is the name of devil in Islam. In islam, Allah commanded the Jinn (beings made from fire) to bow down to the first human, Adam (being made from clay, In islam all humans are crafted from clay) but Iblis thought he was better than him and he didnt bow down, he was then casted out of heaven. Its kinda the opposite of Citan story but I think you can draw some parallels.

Only thing I can find for Henry Mingas is Charlie Mingus, a jazz player but I doubt its connection tbh. For the dragon scrolls and plasma legend part, I feel like its wordplay, like dragon quest or something dunno.

Tldr: Sheva could also refer to Sheba, a country around modern day Yeman. p1 Shaytan refers to rebellion evil spirits usually jinn but not always who tempt people to oppose Allah's guidance. Story time: Suliaman is a king and one of the prophets in islam. He is able to speak to animals and control jinn. Their was kingdom called Sheba, who had a queen named Balkis, who was known for her disbelief in Allah's. The people of sheva worshipped the sun and idols. Prophet suliaman trys to convert the people of Sheba by sending them a letter. Balkis decides to bring an entourage and go to Suliamans court to seek the meaning of the letter. Suliaman asked his assembly of humans, birds and Jinn to bring the throne of Sheba, and ifrit (word that means a powerful jinn) said he would bring it within the twinkling of the eye but a human with the divine wisdom of allah brought it faster, which convinced the queen to convert to islam. Story represents a moral lesson of humility, seeking knowledge and journey towards faith. Dunno how this relates to Shevat tbh. Balkis rules Sheba. Sheba is the English word for sheva, which is hebrew word meaning 7. Which in some religions is considered a holy number. All 3 monothestic religions, see it as a holy number in islam, there are 7 layers of heaven. I just realised sheva and shevat completely different things but uses same root, but shevat is the month but the root word for both Sh-B-T means rest or reflections. Sorry for text dump lol.

Great video! I'd love to see something about the one crucial part of Trails DNA no one talks about: Arcturus, the Curse and Loss of Divinity, a 2000 krpg, and one of the most famous in Korea. It was localized for Japan by Falcom, and Kondo had stated it inspired parts of Trails. It received a fan translation fairly recently, and it's absolutely worth a play, if you've got a free 80 hours and love that genre of RPG.
