Aquaman is exceeding expectations in theaters, a most welcome change from underperforming DC movies of the past years. But historically, many a DC movie didn’t just underperform, they never even made it out the gate.
With the ever soaring popularity of superhero films, it is inevitable that some of these projects would never see the light of day, but DC has had dozens of projects shelved of the years. Some of these films could very well may have been major hits beloved by fans, or they could have been reviled and mocked forever afterwards.
In this video, we will explore five DC movies that never were, namely Tim Burton’s Catwoman, Batman Unchained, Superman Lives, Jack Black’s Green Lantern and George Miller’s Justice League Mortal.

Justice League Mortal sounds like the Justice League Movie we should've gotten. It sounded reasonable. Big takeaway for me was that WB routinely allows profit and merchandising to be the central players instead of plot or character. I'm a little surprised we've gotten even the half decent films we have from them with this in mind.

I still would had loved a snort of that. We were robbed of Jodorowsky's version of Dune and what ever this Super Man acid trip would had been. I really liked that guy's attitude. I think he would of crammed anything in there. A mechanical spider, a two headed T-Rex. Leonard Nimoy as a wolf-a-gator. These creative flows happen when people stay up to late, start talking about strange stuff and no one puts a stop to it, until it is out of control.

Justice League is the cancelled project that intrigues me the most. I still remember reading news and rumors about the production of that film back in the day. Boy oh boy i wonder how different superhero movies would be today if a Justice League movie made by the director of Mad Max had come out before Iron Man and The Avengers.

@Tony Campuzzano Did Affleck's presence save either BvS or Justice League? Not at all. He was seen as competent in the role but Gadot's Wonder Woman and Miller's Flash are the only ones who actually made any lasting impression on audiences. And he will not even be involved in the solo film unless a miracle happens. So i would absolutely take Hammer's Batman over Affleck if it meant getting a much better franchise as a result.

Yet Marvel Studio announced MCU films until 2025, years in advance. What's the difference?
@JcgLounge
@JcgLounge 5 жыл бұрын
Dale Henderson The difference is that we don’t know what those movies could be. Also we know that Marvel Studios, unlike WB, don’t rush things. You see I think Dc wants to have a good cinematic universe but WB is screwing them over. They keep trying to push forward their projects when they aren’t always ready. Look at Suicide Squad. That movie sure as hell wasn’t ready and yet they put it out anyway. Studio Interference is why Dc can’t always have great films. Because WB is pulling too hard on the leash.
@dhenderson1810
@dhenderson1810 5 жыл бұрын
I agree and I think that DC needs to start their own studios like Marvel has, where they have more control. As for your first point, why can't they have origin films for Black Widow or Nick Fury? They feature in a lot of MCU films, but little is known about them. Scarlett Johansenn and Samuel L Jackson have helmed successful films before, and it being a MCU film would guarantee success. Yet they were introduced in Iron Man films and Avengers without having a standalone film. We don't need any more individual Superman or Batman films, and they have been done many times (I know they weren't DCU, but their origins are the same regardless) and Wonder Woman and Aquaman have been successful as standalone films. JL didn't fail because they didn't have individual DC films for each character first.

Even if they never picked up a comic in their lives, what could've possessed the studio into thinking the Jack Black Green Lantern was a good idea? There's being disrespectful to the source material, and then there's this. Even Superman Lives seemed less awful. Shame we never got Batman Unchained or Justice League Mortal though. It sounds like they could've been interesting movies. At least better than most of the DCEU tripe.

How exactly disrespectful would that Green Lantern parody be? I'm genuinely curious, because I have never found GL interesting to begin with. What does it stand for so noble and sacred that a Jack Black comedy would inevitably be disrespectful no matter what else?
@vincent207
@vincent207 5 жыл бұрын
@@Kaucukovnik666 With the exception of a few characters, Green Lantern doesn't lend itself to comedy quite as well as other DC properties. A more comedic tone for the movie could work, but going as far as using giant condoms is way too extreme, and would not sit well with most fans. As for Black, I'm not against him being in the film if he were put in the right role, but I can't really see him as any of the main Lanterns. Even if a franchise doesn't seem all that important to you or me, there are still people that care deeply about it. Take Transformers for example. I'm a casual fan of it at best, but I can still sympathize with those who feel the Michael Bay films have been an insult. Would you be fine with a property you hold dear being treated like a complete joke?

Honestly dude, it's not just about the actors, it's also about the crew. Even with Henry Cavill's talents, he had at least one moment in every DC movie he was in that made him the laughing stock of the internet. In the same token, Ben Affleck turned out to be a much better Batman than i expected, but he still abandoned ship of his own volition, after JL. Superman and Batman both are THE biggest and most frequently revisited/retconned roles in all of cinema, by a huge margin. If you want to breathe new life in these roles, sometimes you gotta hire someone people normally wouldn't expect, and will even petition against. People made fun of Heath Ledger's Joker all day initially, now he's arguably the greatest actor to have ever played Joker, or ever will again. Cage would certainly be more interesting as Clark Kent than Robert Pattinson would be as Batman, in any case.

A Batman Beyond movie would be awesome. They could make a badass teaser trailer out of the show's opening sequence and theme alone. The whole project could have a "Batman meets Blade Runner" feel to it. It would be amazing if Michael Keaton would return as the elderly Bruce Wayne. The movie wouldn't have to be directly tied to any previous Batman film with Keaton in it, yet have hints and nods to many previous Batman media peppered throughout, including those from Keaton's previous films.

And DC smoked Marvel's ass for 30 years before that with their numerous TV success (The Adventures Of Superman", "Batman" "Wonder Woman" and the Reeve Superman films, and the Burton, Schumacher and Nolan Batman films, and numerous cartoons as well). Of Marvel, its only mainstream media hits in the 70's and 80's was the animated "Spiderman" TV show, and the Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno "Incredible Hulk" TV series. Most of the other heroes were unknown to most of the population until the first "Ironman" film (If Tom Cruise had done his proposed "Ironman" film in the 80's, it might have been different). DC tv shows are still doing better than Marvel's, as "Supergirl", "Green Arrow" and "Flash" on CW rate better than failed Marvel projects like "Iron Fist" and "Luke Cage" which can't find a TV station to carry it, so they need to have Netflix make it instead. Marvel fans still pretend not to notice the failures of every "Fantastic 4" film, the Garfield "Spiderman" films, "Daredevil", "Elektra" etc, and Marvel don't even have film rights to all their characters, where WB does.

DC has all it's rights since the back when times up to the modern era but... When it came to team ups they could not get it right. If they REALLY wanted to smoke Marvels behind they could have made Worlds Finest with Bale and Routh a YEAR before Iron man, but here's the problem DC rested on it's laurels content on pumping out DC movies who's sole purpouse is to make money for a few months and if they're lucky get a sequel. MARVEL studios goal to tell a story continuing to the next MOVIE.. DC with all it's expererience in leading this genre could not even get a decent team up with the JUSTICE LEAGUE what happens when the roster becomes larger? Those fans like F4, Garfield Spiderman, Daredevil and Electra? Those are in one ear and out another... JUST LIKE DC Films.. And as of 2019? MARVEL has XMEN and FANTASTIC FOUR BACK. Jon Peters was not simply hired as a producer by WB, but is in fact the actual holder of the Superman movie license lost by Cannon when they went bankrupt in 1989, according to the documentary The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? It's never stated how he acquired the movie rights, only that WB couldn't make the movie without him at that time. There was no mention of the television rights, since that's not what the documentary was about. That said however, it looks like the Salkinds only sold the movie rights to Cannon, and kept the television rights to themselves, since they produced the TV series Superboy (1988-92) after Cannon's Superman IV (1987). At some point shortly after Superboy ended, WB took the Salkinds to court in order to reacquire the rights and won (hence the lack of the Salkinds participation on Lois & Clark), but I've been unable to find any verifiable details regarding the settlement.

RIP Robin Williams, too bad we weren't smart enough to make you joker. Seriously, I've seen his scarier roles, that would give dark night joker a run for it's money if they gave him enough freedom. But then we might not have gotten dark night, a frightening thought.

The story is when WB first approached Jack Nicholson for the Joker, he turned it down. Robin Williams volunteered for the part cause he really wanted it. WB used this as a way to get Jack. That pissed Robin off because he felt they used him. This happened again with Jim Carrey and the role of the Riddler. I imagine Robin would've worked a lot cheaper than Jack and would probably asked to be in sequels instead getting killed off in the first movie. He even wanted to be the Joker again for The Dark Knight. The dude wanted to be Joker more than anybody.

I heard that he wanted to play Riddler as well in BF, but he planned on playing him as a more dark, tortured character (a bit like his character in "One Hour Photo") whereas they cast Carrey because he was big at the box office at the time, and he was going to play it more like Frank Gorshin's version from the 60's "Batman", which is what the studio was more aiming for. So Williams missed out because he actually wanted to play a multi-faceted, deeper, Riddler.

Mr. Fedora Re: Vic and Helena- that's all thanks to Greg Rucka from his Batman and Huntress 6-issue mini back in 2000 But yeah, the 'Brubara"crap came from Timm's Misconstruing of how Adam West's Bruce and Yvonne Craig's Barbara were handled on Batman S3. Espescially being the big factors being 1) Julie Newmar was busy with her participation in McKenna's Gold (though her body double did come back for the penultimate episode with Ida Lupino and Howard Duff before the series finale w/ Zsa Zsa Gabor) & Eartha Kitt as Catwoman pretty much didn't sit well with Southern viewers barring her now legendary Anti-War chat at the White House by the time her 2nd and final Feline outing in the Catwoman and Joker 2 parter airing around that time. Even the one panel of Batgirl's first appearance showed Dick, not Bruce, consoling her when she blamed herself for letting Killer Moth escaped. Whether Timm (or Brian Azzarello or the boys behind the Arkham games) come to tems with this or not, far as men in her life, Barbara Gordon will always be tied to Dick Grayson and Jason Bard (or the Ted Kord Blue Beetle of you're Chuck Dixon) and always then. With rumors being if it did well then Batman Unchained as an animated movie would be greenlit. But then after all the Kevin Spacey me too drama went down. DC were decades ahead of Marvel at one time and were making successful Batman movies when Marvel almost filed for bankruptcy. Fate can be a cruel mistress for some and an omen for others. Warner became too greedy and thus lost site of a true, coherent vision that could've kick started a shared DC cinematic universe years before Iron Man. Let's put it this way, if Warner had played ball with their directors and script writers then we would've probably had a Justice League movie years before 2008's Iron Man. (excluding Justice League Mortal) Even today Warner hasn't a clue as to what they want from a live action DC cinematic universe. This was clearly shown with the releases of 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. My opinion of those films is that they came too early and they should've slowly introduced mainstream audiences to the main members of the league through separate movies. Each movie would introduce audiences to the hero, who they are, how they got their powers, the origin story and of course their arch enemy. Now here's where things start to get interesting, one of the members of the league is keeping watch of these other heroes from a distance in each film, just like Marvel with Nick Fury, this mystery hero doesn't get fully noticed at first, though subtle hints are dropped at the end of the every film via post credit scenes. By the time of the last solo film of a main Justice League character it is revealed who that mystery hero was and why he or she has been watching them this whole time. That's when you introduce the Justice League! "But that's a blatant copy of the MCU formula?" Exactly, but just because Marvel did it, doesn't mean that its a trademark move. Warner, in my opinion, need to start again from scratch and this time reflect upon what it is about superhero movies that draw in an audience and fans alike. Its not just about how flashy Superman's outfit can look on a toy, its also about how you treat the characters and your story is going to move them forward. What drives Superman to protect Lois Lane and Metropolis from crime and evil? What drives Lex Luthor to commit atrocities and hate Superman for the good that he has done for the people of Metropolis and the rest of the world? Warner can find those answers, but first they need to understand what it means to create this world.

BvS is awesome and a fresh take on how super heroes are introduced. Remember that Zack Snyders movies would have been like 4-5, no more, but it would open up for other directors to do their stuff both meanwhile and after. MCU is a fkn tv-show.
@lewisbianco8951
@lewisbianco8951 5 жыл бұрын
It is indeed a fresh new take on how superheroes are introduced, I will not dispute that, however, audience reception speaks for itself. That film needed more fighting against Superman and Batman, after all, that's what the movie was marketed for. Wonder Woman breaking up the fight and showing them that a much bigger danger was imminent [Doomsday] was a also a very good thing too, however, it shouldn't have been Doomsday. Warner rushed Doomsday into the DCCU. The MCU is doing just fine in the movie department as of now. With phase 3 coming to a close, its hard to tell who Marvel's next big baddie is going to be, but with Fox returning their Marvel properties, it could very well be Galactus.

And Justice League Mortal would have also failed because they were still trying to do it backwards then too. Universal's Dark Universe was a creative failure but it at least failed by moving in the right direction but starting with the "We'll do everything at once and then follow it up with what works for people with individual movies" approach just shows they didn't know what they were doing beyond Batman. And, again, it's less about actual content and more about marketing with these people, isn't it?

@@dhenderson1810 "Avengers:Civil War" ... am I supposed to respond to this? Fine. Nick Fury didn't get his own movie and his showing up out of the blue in...wait, he was in Iron Man which was the first movie. Black Widow was in Iron Man 2 prior to the Avengers and Hawkeye is a guy with a bow, that's his character, that's always been his character except when the writers got bored with him and took the bow away. He also showed up before the Avengers as a cameo in Thor. And once you set up a shared franchise then you can pop up with new characters, try out new characters anywhere you want while still doing new solo movies. And Hulk can't get his own movie these days because Universal owns part of the movie rights for solo Hulk films. So yeah.... facts... X-Men was Fox and they were doing their own thing. They focused on Wolverine from the beginning, right from the first movie so much, they ouldn't decide on any other solo "Origin" movies. Speaking of "Origins"... They eventually managed a Deadpool film but that was only ironically connected to their X-Men films. And the movie that introduced Spider-Man into the MCU was Captain America: Civil War.
@dhenderson1810

But that is my point. Black Widow and Nick Fury debuted in another hero's film. Not their own individual one. Just because they appeared in a film prior to Avengers doesn't mean that they had their own films. Their characters weren't as explored as they would be in individual films, where they are the focus, not another hero's sidekicks. Also, Wonder Woman and Batman popped up in "Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice" BEFORE "Justice League" came out. So, Batman and Wonder Woman appearing in a DCU film, when only Superman had had an individual film with "Man Of Steel" is no different to Black Widow and Nick Fury showing up in films before "Avengers". There is no difference. Oh, there is one difference. Wonder Woman actually had her own film after "Justice League", and was the biggest-grossing DCU film (until the recent success of "Aquaman"). Appearing in two films before her own film didn't hurt WW at the box office. Aquaman appeared in JL, and his individual film is the biggest grossing DCU film ever. DCU Batman film with Ben Affleck hasn't happened, just like a Mark Ruffalo Hulk film hasn't happened. Black Widow hasn't had her own film, nor has Nick Fury. I see no reason for this, other than Marvel Studios don't know what to do with them, except have them fight alongside other heroes. MCU don't have individual films anyway. They always have to stick another Marvel hero into the movie, making it a joint feature, rather than let a hero shine in their own adventure. The only Spiderman film MCU did, "Homecoming" stuck Tony Stark in it (eventhough, from all the comic books, cartoons, TV shows and prior movies, I don't remember Tony Stark ever being part of things). So MCU couldn't even have a Spiderman film with only Spiderman in it. For all their faults, the Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield ones didn't need to stick other heroes in to make it interesting. So, your arguments don't stack up, as both sides have had heroes appear in other films before a team-up one. When DC included WW in "Dawn Of Justice", her own film grossed at the box office. A "Black Widow" film hasn't even been made, and if it was, you can bet that they would shoehorn RDJ or someone else in, because they don't have confident that one hero can carry an entire film.

Kevin W. Clark Bruce Timm and Paul Dini in particular. You can tell from their shot at him in the Legends of the Dark Knight episode of BTAS that they really had (or still have) no love for Schumacher given how much he, along w/ Lee and Janet Scott Batchelor and Akiva Goldsman kept lifting from the animated series for the films (i.e. Nygma's redish-brown hair converted to neon orange, Mr. Freeze altogether to name a few). Hell, I really wouldnt be surprised if the films were the reason we saw less of Freeze and Riddler during the 1997-99 stretch save for the Batman Gotham Adventures tie-in comic that outlasted the show til 2003
