In this video narrate the history of the 4th largest river in Africa, the Zambezi river, and the construction of the largest manmade reservoir in the world by volume by volume, the Kariba Dam.
The dam was designed by Andre Coyne a French engineer and inventor and construction of Kariba was by an Italian consortium named Impresit.
Much of the material that you use here was filmed by Dennis Serretta, and his son Graham Serretta for a documentary commissioned by the Federal Power Board from Killarney Film Studios.

I didnt even know this either or ever thought about it. Too much useless history in schools that you have no choice but to cram without proper insight into it and i barely remember any of it. Education system needs a revamp, its better and more engaging learning from videos where possible

I was so fortunate that as a 10 year old boy I visited Kariba in 1960. I remember many of the scenes and incidents described here as history being reported as news back then! Thank you.

You are a really good and articulate storyteller. Well done! It's so good to see my old home town again. I learnt to swim in that pool, served as an alter boy at St Barbara's church, learnt to sail on lake Kariba, and like others, I learnt a thing or two from your efforts in putting this together..

The Zambezi river doesn't pass through Tanzania. It starts from our North Western Province (Zambia), turns into Angola,back into Zambia, then between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and finally through Mozambique.

Nice video thanks for sharing. I always wonder and believe africa's problems are simply due to a lack of leadership that thinks critically, plans and implements massive long term projects for the benefit of future, the dam started as a random thought in someone's mind and now millions depend on it. Btw where can I watch the animal rescue videos?

No, the dam wall was never hollow or empty inside. It is solid concrete. They may have driven into one of the turbine halls while it was under construction, but they would have been very privileged to do so. We drove our Ford truck into the turbine hall to offload film equipment and lights.

Yes it's such a shame that the conniving communists got their man Mugabe elected in. Otherwise, if the British were still there, who knows where Rhodesia would be today, at the cutting edge of human civilisation no doubt. The Chinese CCP are to heavily invested in Zimbabwe these days.
@Brommear
@Brommear 3 жыл бұрын
@@okeypokey3693 I think, if memory serves me right, and that's no guarantee anymore, the Chinese built a railway line in Zambia shortly after independence. It was of a non-standard gauge and has caused enormous problems integrating it into the existing (colonial?) system.

Lovely video. But a major point of correction, I know somewhere on the internet is says Zambia is the source of the Zambezi but that is actually not true. The Zambezi River and Okavango Delta share the same source which is in Angola. Angola is the source of the Zambezi Zambia some water is added by other countries Zambezi passes through such as Zambezi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique. But original source is found in Angola, you don't have to take my word or anyone's word on this, if you know someone basic map reading grab a satilite map and explore for yourself.

Can you for a while sober up and relate correctly. If the Zambezi river was inhabited by BaTonga, how come you say Kariba was a mispronunciation of the Shona word Kariva. You always want to involve Shona people in a history belonging to the BaTonga. Kariba was a mispronunciation of the Tonga word Kaliba, meaning a trap. It is the "L" that those from other places changed to "R". Research well before you choose to say anything.
