While many of the sport's most popular drivers have come and gone, one man stands alone at the top of the pile as the perineal fan favorite. A humble soft-spoken Georgian, Awesome Bill from Dawsonville is THE most popular driver of all time in NASCAR history. So let's find out how he became so popular and why it's so important to NASCAR's history.

S1ap you forgot one of the most important and telling tidbits of all in this video... Bill Elliott's popularity not only led him to withdraw from the ballot, but it also results in Chase Elliott not even going by his real name...Bill Elliott II. Try Googling that name to see for yourself. Even Dale Jr. himself never felt led to do that.

So now we have videos on Alan Kulwicki, Davey Allison, Bill Elliott, and an entire series of videos about Mark Martin. Now we just need videos on Harry Gant and Kyle Petty and we'll have videos on all of the drivers that could have won the 1992 championship going into Atlanta, as well as a video on the race itself.

I couldn't agree more. I've been a diehard NASCAR fan since 1972. To me, the 1992 season was the best ever. Although Bill was my guy, I liked all six that went into Atlanta with a chance that year. I was at that race. The crowd went insane when Kulwicki was announced as the winner of the championship. Probably the absolute best feel-good moment I've ever witnessed. Thanks for the great video Slap... and YES!!! Finish this series out with Harry Gant and Kyle Petty stories.

I remember when I was, like...five years old. My dad was VERY eager to take me to a car show that was happening in town. Now, at the time, Bill Elliott was (and of course still is) my hero. Turns out the reason my dad took me there was because Bill was there signing autographs. And the line literally stretched around and zigzagged through the center hall there. He was only slated for short amount of time but he absolutely refused to leave until every last fan got their chance. And little kid me was ESTATIC. Coolest guy I'd ever met. Anyone who says "Don't meet your heroes" clearly didn't have Bill Elliott as theirs.

I got back stage pass at M I S through B Parsons team. R Petty's 1000th start. Got to hang and talk to all kinds of drivers. Petty was mobbed all the time. Talk to Bennie, H Gant, M Martin. Got about 15 minutes with Elliot as he sat against a wall exhausted. But when I said something about his car he wouldn't stop explaining the technical questions I asked. Great detail and I think he liked the fact I understood all was he was explaining. Got his picture and actually posted it near a 1/25 scale model I built of the million dollar winning car with upside 9 looking like an" E". The model was on a trailer that was pulled by a Ford p/u painted to match the raceway. Wanted that picture signed but didn't bring it to the race.

Seconded. I grew up as a fan of Dale, mostly because the black #3 was my favorite car, but I never got to see him race live and I didn’t even know that he’d died until 2 or 3 years later when I was watching a race with my big brother and asked him why Dale wasn’t racing. It’s mainly thanks to KZbinrs like s1ap and EmpLemon that I’ve been able to actually learn more about the man in black. Funnily enough, my big bro was and still is a Jeff Gordon fan. Thankfully the fanbase rivalry didn’t spread to us.

Awesome Bill's late career resurgence with Evernham will always leave us wondering "what if?" with regards to his struggles in his own 94 car. What if instead he had gone to another competitive team? If he still had it at 45 in 2001, he certainly must've had it through the mid 90s and 2000. Roush, Yates, and Penske were competitive Ford teams in that time span - he would have been a good fit at any of them.

Bill was my childhood hero growing up. His near dominance in the mid to late 80's makes me wish I was born a decade earlier. Unfortunately, I was a 90's kid. Admittedly, I only started rooting for him because he drove the McDonald's car, but I stuck with him even through the Evernham years. When he finally got his first win in over seven years at Homestead in 2001, I was elated. My dad's favorite driver, I still have many fond memories watching races with him. He would take the Nascar calendar, pull out all the pictures of the Chevy drivers, and place them around the dartboard in the garage. Our basement had a black and white checkered floor and Bill and other Nascar memorabilia everywhere. I still have all my Racing Champions cars with all the versions of Bill's 94 cars. He's a huge connecting piece between me and my dad who passed away before Bill's resurgence in the Dodge #9. And even though Chase drives a Chevy, he's my favorite driver now.

Bill was the reason I got into,NASCAR racing in the 80’s. We lived just a short drive from MIS and went to every august race. He owned that track in late 80’s, seemed unbeatable there. What a great career he had. He was shy, bashful but fast as hell on the track. Thanks for all the memories Bill, hope your son can do just as well.

9:49 - I mustve been a spiteful kid. I used to wonder if it was personal for Terry as well after he left Junior and that's why he wanted to take that lap led away from the #11 car. From the sounds of it, Bill Elliott's popularity was similar to what made Jim Clark so popular in F1. They were both soft spoken, neither of them were brash or arrogant and they were both lawful good types. The late Murray Walker, a legendary British F1 commentator (who commented on the sport full time from 1950-2000, switching to part time in 2001, before calling it a career shortly thereafter, only making sporadic commentaries before he passed away in March 2021 aged 97) said of Jim Clark: "Jimmy had no desire to be rich or famous, he just loved driving cars fast," To show how humble he was, rather than staying in a mansion like modern F1 drivers, Jim Clark liked to spend time, when he wasn't racing, at his family's Sheep Farm in the borders region of Scotland. Although he had been gone nearly 21 years by the time I was born (he was killed in a Formula 2 race at Hockenheim, Germany, in 1968), he would become the racing driver I admire the most. He wasn't even confident in his own amazing driving skills, while club racing in Scotland, he asked his close friend, and team mate, Ian Scott-Watson of the other drivers: "why is everyone driving so slowly?" To which Watson, somewhat exasperated, said to him: "Jim, it's not that they are driving slowly so much, it's you going so bloody fast!" Although he didn't win as many as he was capable, he nonetheless, in the year of his death break a record for wins which had stood since 1957, making him the successful driver of his era

This made me wonder what would’ve happened if Bill would’ve had a successful ride through the back-half of the 90s? This guy spent over 7 years (late 1994 to the second to last race of 2001) without winning once and still ended with 46 career wins. It makes me think if he was in a competitive ride, what could he have done? How many more wins, and possibly, championships, would Bill have had.

I must be of similar age to S1ap, Too young to have watched Elliott in the 80s. But as a kid I saw Bill's McDs car on the side of a cereal box or something and I was just taken by it for some reason and he became my favorite driver. Watching his late 90s run was tough. I knew the Evernham partnership was going to be good for him and it was great to finally see Awesome Bill in victory lane with my own eyes. 2003 Homestead race still stings though.

To CRYSTALIZE your point at the outset of the Video Slap. I was at Darlington one year, in the middle of Bill's days in the McDonald's car. He was running GREAT that day. As memory serves he had even lead some. Then something toooo normal for Bill happened & out of contention he went. GOOD Thing for my Pop & Brother, we weren't in my vehicle that day. Cause I was ready to pack it in, and head to the House.
