It's the billboards that impressed me as a kid. I begged my parents to stop there just because of the signs. I somehow imagined Ha-Pea & Pea-Wee were waiting for me there! That sign still makes me smile. Never went as a kid, but did get to visit as an adult in the 1980's. For me, the signs along the way are still the best part of the experience because they remind me of family vacations in the 1960s.

Yes, the billboards are the best! They worked on me too, stopped in for the first time on a road trip around 15 years ago and got hooked.

This was a hard one. Seeing on the news that the restaurant was closing was so sad. It's such a landmark going up north and on the way to Solvang. Was nice to see your video and the history of the family and the restaurants.

I was so happy to finally cover this restaurant, I had even filmed a different ending. Right when they announced the closure, it was like a kick in the gut. I had to figure out a way to change the ending so that the history still flowed well. Definitely a huge loss, even if they do bring the restaurant back in some way, it's not going to be the same.

@@californiography You did well with the video, I would never guess this wasn't the original ending. Unfortunately I don't think they will be coming back, big corporations just don't seem to care about anything but the bottom line. Thanks again for another piece of California history

@@debbie7115 yeah, that's my fear as well. They have signs saying "temporarily closed for redevelopment," but that might just be to appease the public. Thank you as always for being a great supporter, I really do appreciate you!

We used to drive past those billboards many times on our way to visit grandma in Pismo Beach. Hope they manage to keep the place and get it going again if only for nostalgia of a billboard.

I hope so too. The billboards near Buellton are considered historic, so they’re not supposed to be torn down. Seems weird to have the billboards up and not have the restaurant.

I was born in inLompoc and lived there a number of years back and forth. Lots of old memories here as a kid. Thanks for the story behind it.

Lompoc is one of my favorite places to drive through! Love the murals all over the city. Thank you for watching!

I am so sad that it is closed, so close to its hundredth anniversary! ! My father and I drove from the Bay Area down to Los Angeles and back to visit relatives just this past summer, and we were very happy to have the chance to eat at Santa Nella on the way down and Buellton on the way back! They are both as great as I remember them from my childhood. I wonder how the closure will affect the whole town of Buellton, and Solvang, and where travelers will look forward to stopping!

I was looking forward to the 100th celebration; they've always celebrated big milestones in fun ways and invited the surviving members of the Andersen family back for the festivities. It really is so sad that it closed just months from its 100th. The closure has to affect Buellton, Pea Soup Andersen's was a huge roadside attraction and I know many people that would never stop in Buellton if not for Pea Soup Andersen's. I think Solvang won't be negatively affected, they attract travelers on their own, but only time will tell.
