CGI has its place. I couldn't imagine Toy Story or Shrek without CGI but it's come to the point where hand drawn animation has gone nearly extinct in the West. It's nice to see its still thriving in Japan but I miss Western animation. Disney looked so smooth compared to any Anime and the wackiness of Western animation was charming and funny.

Yeah but the studios earn more money having 1 or 2 movies a year done fast thanks to the magic of CGI. It's also much cheaper. It's for that reasons we will never see traditional animation again :(

That’s right that did put those popeye cards in niddle foods when they also produced food albeit with limited success, BUT it does makes me wonder “what if nintendo did not got permission to make hanafuda cards of popeye back in 1968,would they then would,ve came up with mario & donkeykong mascots back in 1968???” We probably would never know but still,,,

I'll always consider it fascinating that the classic and familiar artstyle of early Nintendo is essentially the result of early efforts to mimic the look of Popeye art. 1:16 I believe the main reason Miyamoto wanted to make a Popeye game wasn't so much the property's popularity as it was Miyamoto's own personal fandom of Popeye. Popeye is one of those special cases where the character enjoyed an inexplicable level of popularity in Japan, similar to Tom & Jerry and Thunderbirds. 17:57 You're right about the Odyssey2 hardware. It was so much more limited than the Atari2600, you could be excused for considering it to be from a previous gen, and yet it was released a year after the 2600. Most of the compromises you see on-screen come from the fact that the platform had only 64 bytes of RAM, resulting in most of the graphics having to be drawn from built-in ROM which includes the robot-like sprite standing in for Popeye, the ball shape for the spinach, and the "divide" symbols hovering on the sides. 21:33 Part of the reason why the sprites look off is that this footage of the C64 port is coming from an emulator using a post-process to smooth out edges, so it isn't really representative of true C64 graphics.
@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries4 жыл бұрын

You mentioned DC's take on Popeye as Captain Strong. So here's some interesting history about that as well, when Max Fleischer did Popeye, they also did the original Superman shorts. Ironically, they did a short where Popeye meets Superman (sort of). In it, Popeye, Olive and Bluto (pre-Brutus era) are either reading about Superman, or they've just finished watching a Superman short, but whatever the case, Olive and Popeye admire Superman. Bluto comes up with a scheme where he disguises himself as the Man of Steel, and relentlessly picks on Popeye, knowing the sailor won't dare hit 'Superman,' but when Bluto's ruse is found out, Popeye downs some Spinach, thanks to the Man of Steel and defeats Bluto. Now the reason behind the ripoff was in 1970, DC thought King Features would not mind lending out the character since both had been done by Fleischer Studios, as well as the promise of DC to revive Popeye in a DC Kids line, which never really successfully launched, so they ended up losing the license. I suspect DC came up with Captain Strong since the attempted crossover of our favorite sailor had been leaked out (remember this was DAYS before the Internet) and the comics company had to come up with something where not to disappoint the readers. Thus they took the Harvey Comics route of simply 'rebranding' the character. Later they would do this with Asterix the Gaul, when Superman ends up in the Past...
@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries4 жыл бұрын
Although I'm a huge fan of Popeye and have seen a lot of the cartoons I came across the Superman one you are referring to when researching this. I was very surprised to see him actually referred to as Superman in the cartoon and that they actually used the music from the Fleischer feature. That was until I realized both properties were made by Fleischer. That's interesting about the captain strong back story, thanks for posting

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I agree with you. With how popular Popeye has been it seems strange that more games were not imported to the states. Last year I started an art series called "Cartoon Confusion" where I paint cartoon characters in different worlds. For example, Bender (Futurama) and Slimer (Real Ghostbusters) in front of Castle Greyskull. Another example is Fred Flintstone in a scene from the Atari 2600 Pitfall. After watching your documentary about Mortal Kombat I was inspired to paint Stewie (Family Guy) and a Care Bear (I created one called Halloween Bear) in the location of Dead Pool in MK2. I have done 11 of these so far. This weekend I will be researching my next idea; I am thinking something with the classic Joust video game.

The translation per Wikipedia of the SNES game was: "Popeye: the Tale of Sea hag the Wicked Witch." In that game, Roast Chicken could refill your life bar, and you got extra lives when you either got a Popeye doll or 100 coins. The catch? You instantly got credited with the life but lost the coins if you used coins for the life. If at the time, though, you were low on your life bar, you might not have the coins for a Roast Chicken from RoughHouse the Cook to refill your life bar if you hadn't found one in the level you were on (or still took lots of hits after you DID find one). Spinach gave you invulnerability for a finishing move once you hit a wandering boss a few times (often in the head) by either jumping on the head or hitting a weak spot with your anchor-and-chain (but didn't refill your life bar).

I'm surprised they haven't added it yet, and must be a licensing issue

Is this a reupload? I could have sworn you reviewed Popeye already. I distinctly remember the spinach/hen head reference.

There was also a Game Watch version of Popeye from the 70's. I had the Game Watch and the Famicom versions when I was a kid.

It looks like the C64 emulator that you're using had some kind of filter enabled. HQ2X or something like that, so everything was getting overly rounded out. Nice video!

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I only noticed because my brother used to play Popeye on the C64 a lot in the 80s. :) I always liked it, but could never play it for that long. :)

We never had an official port of the arcade game, but our Sailor Man on the Radio Shack Color Computer looks like it was very accurate, beyond limitations of sound and such for the machine, Wild.
@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries4 жыл бұрын
That was fantastic for the machine, I wish it was an official conversion so I could have included it

This was one of my favourite arcade games in the early 80's, and was an excellent unofficial clone on the TRS-80, which was also the first game to require the full 64K, on the Color Computer (Coco) All names have been changed, to protect the guilty, and are still the funniest snd weirdest character names on any 8-bit video game Olive = Elsie Popeye = Sailor Man Bluto = Big Fat Bad Guy Sweatpea = Smart Alec Kid Sea Hag = Old Ugly Sea Woman Wimpy = Fat Guy Eating Hamburger kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHqvn2RnhKmNsMk

Yes that version is good but it's unofficial which is why I did not included in my video

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Indeed, I almost made my first custom built arcade cabinet with Popeye but decided to go for Mario Bros to have a 2 player cabinet instead. Could still make Popeye out of it today if i bought new artwork since i painted my nintendo cab with blue paint (the blue from Donkey Kong) and slapped the Mario bros artwork on it. Maybe i'll convert it who knows ! Great vids keep it up !
