CGI has its place. I couldn't imagine Toy Story or Shrek without CGI but it's come to the point where hand drawn animation has gone nearly extinct in the West. It's nice to see its still thriving in Japan but I miss Western animation. Disney looked so smooth compared to any Anime and the wackiness of Western animation was charming and funny.

CGI looks like crap. I've been yelling for 20 years how Final Fantasy VII cutscenes on PS1 look far better than any "Pixar" junk in the theaters.

Yeah but the studios earn more money having 1 or 2 movies a year done fast thanks to the magic of CGI. It's also much cheaper. It's for that reasons we will never see traditional animation again :(

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I know people call that big oaf as Brutus (which wasn’t just called that in Japan) because of Paramount and King Features getting the ownership of Bluto all wrong, but it would make sense if Bluto’s full name was “Brutus J. Bluto”.

The translation per Wikipedia of the SNES game was: "Popeye: the Tale of Sea hag the Wicked Witch." In that game, Roast Chicken could refill your life bar, and you got extra lives when you either got a Popeye doll or 100 coins. The catch? You instantly got credited with the life but lost the coins if you used coins for the life. If at the time, though, you were low on your life bar, you might not have the coins for a Roast Chicken from RoughHouse the Cook to refill your life bar if you hadn't found one in the level you were on (or still took lots of hits after you DID find one). Spinach gave you invulnerability for a finishing move once you hit a wandering boss a few times (often in the head) by either jumping on the head or hitting a weak spot with your anchor-and-chain (but didn't refill your life bar).

You mentioned DC's take on Popeye as Captain Strong. So here's some interesting history about that as well, when Max Fleischer did Popeye, they also did the original Superman shorts. Ironically, they did a short where Popeye meets Superman (sort of). In it, Popeye, Olive and Bluto (pre-Brutus era) are either reading about Superman, or they've just finished watching a Superman short, but whatever the case, Olive and Popeye admire Superman. Bluto comes up with a scheme where he disguises himself as the Man of Steel, and relentlessly picks on Popeye, knowing the sailor won't dare hit 'Superman,' but when Bluto's ruse is found out, Popeye downs some Spinach, thanks to the Man of Steel and defeats Bluto. Now the reason behind the ripoff was in 1970, DC thought King Features would not mind lending out the character since both had been done by Fleischer Studios, as well as the promise of DC to revive Popeye in a DC Kids line, which never really successfully launched, so they ended up losing the license. I suspect DC came up with Captain Strong since the attempted crossover of our favorite sailor had been leaked out (remember this was DAYS before the Internet) and the comics company had to come up with something where not to disappoint the readers. Thus they took the Harvey Comics route of simply 'rebranding' the character. Later they would do this with Asterix the Gaul, when Superman ends up in the Past...

Although I'm a huge fan of Popeye and have seen a lot of the cartoons I came across the Superman one you are referring to when researching this. I was very surprised to see him actually referred to as Superman in the cartoon and that they actually used the music from the Fleischer feature. That was until I realized both properties were made by Fleischer. That's interesting about the captain strong back story, thanks for posting

That’s right that did put those popeye cards in niddle foods when they also produced food albeit with limited success, BUT it does makes me wonder “what if nintendo did not got permission to make hanafuda cards of popeye back in 1968,would they then would,ve came up with mario & donkeykong mascots back in 1968???” We probably would never know but still,,,

I do believe that's the first time i've seen a TI port utterly outclass a C64 port! impressive! The original arcade game's hi-res (for the time) graphics really blew me away too, I had thought only Bally/Midway games of the era used a hi-res display so seeing this in the corner store as a kid was amazing. Too bad I never really loved the gameplay itself tho. I felt there was too many items needed to advance and not enough 'helper' items for the time needed, bu I know...get gud.

Way back in 1982 when Popeye was first released my girlfriend and I played Popeye every chance we could. Fast forward to around 2012, I was able to find an original Popeye arcade machine for sale and I jumped right on it. We don't play it very often but when we do it's every bit as much fun now as it was then.

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I agree with you. With how popular Popeye has been it seems strange that more games were not imported to the states. Last year I started an art series called "Cartoon Confusion" where I paint cartoon characters in different worlds. For example, Bender (Futurama) and Slimer (Real Ghostbusters) in front of Castle Greyskull. Another example is Fred Flintstone in a scene from the Atari 2600 Pitfall. After watching your documentary about Mortal Kombat I was inspired to paint Stewie (Family Guy) and a Care Bear (I created one called Halloween Bear) in the location of Dead Pool in MK2. I have done 11 of these so far. This weekend I will be researching my next idea; I am thinking something with the classic Joust video game.

I grew up on the C64 version. If you used the Spinach and timed it well, when Bluto flew across the screen, you could land the coil on him and he would float in the air for the duration of the level making it easy to get the hearts. Not sure how the hell I figured that out as a kid :)

I wish in our current era that they would still create things in that classic rotoscoped style. Nothing compares to that in my opinion. Growing up through the 90s I miss so much animation that I never thought would disappear. I'd love to see Spawn game's, creations, there is such a creative world to build off of if done right. I hope game development can find a way to create a technological technique that allows them to create games or TV shows in the classic look of rotoscoped animations in 2D. 2.5D. type game's. Even tho it's the modern era. I still wish we had super Nintendo, Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube styled games being created and not just triple AAA, hyper focused on graphics stuff.. there is so much to gaming that's not even being tapped into. Like creative sports games that we no longer see... So many other examples.

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries oh for sure. That game is a work of art!! I just wish we had more games even remotely similar to it, in aesthetic. There is so many different niche's in gaming that could utilize that type of art style or something. I feel like devs have gotten too caught up in "graphics or realism" and honestly I'm pretty tired of realism in every game sometimes... I hope we see a comeback of "video gamey uniqueness" for the sake of making the game more fun. Rather than focusing on realistic or best graphics.. it's taken away from creativity and diversity in art style and game styles to be honest.

Popeye is from the forgotten characters in the comic book & animated department as a whole i believe. It was to be released a 3D animation film some years back but for some reason scraped as a project thus letting him once more behind the scenes. It is however here & there in some formats like funko pop released lately, and i see him here & there in the web mentioned like your video! I know what can bring him back really strong,a videogame release from the people behind cuphead.By utilizing the same technique in the style they can work up an action arcade style beat em up featuring the sailor in new adventures.Or a new movie perhaps by disney or dreamworks would help allot for a great comeback.Even though you saying he's back he's still fighting somewhere back there waiting once more to be able to shown how popular he was and can still be today! A small reminder though: You forgot also mention the statue they made for him for the spinach consumerism years back!
