Ham radio has long been known for QSL cards as a means of acknowledging a contact, but how did they get started? QSL cards are using in the amateur radio community, Short Wave Listening (SWL) community and even Citizens Band radio.
QSL cards got their start in the early 1900s when radio broadcasting and transmitter electronics was first becoming popular. They allowed stations to understand just how far their radio transmitter was being heard. Many radio owners took pride in how many distant radio transmissions they could pull in.
After almost a century of use QSL cards are still being using by ham radio operators today. In fact, I think it's one of the most fun parts of the hobby that is being slowly taken away due to things like eQSL, Log Book of the World and the QRZ Logbook.
