Fun fact: Russia had a colony in Djibouti called Sagallo, a colony in the Hawaii called Fort Elizabeth, a colony in California called Fort Ross and even the chinese city of Tianjin was under russian control for a while.

Great work! What doesn't cease to amaze me is the fact that Russians conquered Siberia back in the 17-18th centuries when there were no railroads, yet nobody remembers that, whereas Americans are so proud of colonizing the Wild West in the 19th century with all the railroads and guns.

Vladimir the great (The lord that he brought Christianity to the Russian people from East Roman Empire), Olga ( Russians first female figure; Vladimir's mother ), Yaroslav and the others. If we want to learn Russian history, it's necessary to learn the Kievan Rus as well.

@Lelik_208

@@irenaveksler1935 Formally, after the Mongol invasion and the burning of Kiev, the title of Grand Duke of All Rus' passed to the Prince of Vladimir (who decided not to follow the tradition and did not move his residence to the destroyed Kiev). Subsequently, this title passed to the Moscow princes and was passed down to Ivan the Terrible, who added the tsar to this title. So, in a way, there is a complete political inheritance between Russia and Ancient Rus. On the other hand, the principalities that came under the control of Lithuania and Poland gave birth to Ukrainian and Belarusian identity.

@Perceiz
@Perceiz 7 жыл бұрын
Hugary -countryball I do think that every nation has its right of self determination, yet with Kosovo it's a different story. In that case, many Muslims simply migrated to what was originally the heart of Serbia. Just because there are currently more people of other ethnicities that Serbian in a region of Serbia, doesn't mean they should become independent. With Crimea it's yet another story. Here, Khrushchev unconstitutionally made Crimea apart of Ukraine (it was apart of Russia for quite a long while and the majority of the population is and has always been Russian). This he decided the future for Crimea for them, without giving them a choice. The 2014 referendum showed that they were against this and wanted to be with Russia, like previously. Due to many ties between Russia and Crimea, their opportunity to finally decide their future for themselves should be acknowledged.

If I was granted the opportunity to see how how the world would look like *if* something else went differently, I'd ask "what if Alaska stayed Russian land". I am eager to know
@unadin4583
@unadin4583 7 жыл бұрын
Your guess is as good as mine, but I'll throw out two scenarios: 1. Russia did not sell Alaska to the USA. The population of USA and Canada grew rapidly during the second half of the 19th century. Once gold was discovered in Alaska at the end of the century, America and UK/Canada would decide that they had to have it. This is what happened in South Africa around the same time. When the Boers discovered gold there, the British simply shoved them out of the way and took the land for themselves. I could see a scenario in which Britain/Canada and the US made Russia an offer they couldn't refuse. Either country, alone or together could have defeated Russian forces in Alaska. Japan may have wanted to get a piece of the action too. In the Russo-Japanese war, the British had supported Japan. Britain and America would probably not have wanted to fight each other at this time, so Alaska probably would have been divided between the USA and Canada. 2. Russia did not sell Alaska to the USA, gold was not discovered there, and Russia managed to hold on to Alaska up until WW1. Alaska might have provided a sanctuary for the czar, the Russian White army, and pretty much all of the Bolshevik's enemies. They could have used this as a base of operations to undermine the Bolsheviks. Britain, Canada, and America would have supported their efforts, and the Russian revolution would have gone on much longer. There are all sorts of possibilities. I doubt that the White army could have retaken European Russia from the Bolsheviks, but there may have been large parts of Asiatic Russia over which the Bolsheviks (and later Stalin) could not maintain a firm grip. This might have been very detrimental to the Soviets in WW2. On the other hand, if the Alaskan Russians decided to put politics aside and defend the motherland, the combined forces facing Hitler might have been stronger. The aftermath of that scenario is that after the defeat of Germany, the Alaskan Russians would have been a strong position in the eastern USSR, and the communists would not have gotten a foothold in North Korea. Again, there are all sorts of possibilities and I am just throwing out a few scenarios.
