Speculative Evolution is a fascinating topic that gained a lot of traction through the mind of Dougal Dixon. He took this idea and applied it to different concepts that would eventually come into fruition in the form of series known as the After Trilogy. What was this series? What led up to its creation? How did it affect the idea of speculative evolution? Join me, as I take a look at the history of the After Trilogy.

After Man is the only one that got reprinted in recent years so it's easier to find. I managed to get hold of the New Dinosaurs at a 2nd hand book shop. Man After Man is particularly hard to find - I believe it didn't do very well compared to the other 2, so it's pretty rare

I owned a copy of 'Man after Man' for many years, but I donated it to a charity shop in 2017 when I moved and had to get rid of a load of stuff. Never realised it was so rare and worth so much until I've recently seen a few videos which mention it. From what I recall, I found it interesting, but not very realistic, and so was willing to let it go as not something I'd be likely to reference often.

15:34 lots of birds have abandoned flight take for example the birds of new Zealand and the dodo of Mauritius its entirely possible that pterosaurs could settle on a land if there are no competitors or predators
@DarthVader-bd6dz
@DarthVader-bd6dz 3 жыл бұрын
I mean you do have a good point but by that logic wouldn’t hatzegopteryx permanently reside on hateg island I mean when there’s nothing but dwarf dinos your basically unbeatable yet they exploited their flight and would hunt prey on other Islands in my opinion a speculative azhdarchid would use their flight to cover large distances and maybe fly to other islands and sneak up on prey from above
@stickthesecond5085
@stickthesecond5085 3 жыл бұрын
@@DarthVader-bd6dz perhaps the analogy doesn’t quite work with pterosaurs since most of them are predators with flying being an important part of their hunting strategy. That would be like saying in an island of rabbits eagles would stop flying
@Dell-ol6hb
@Dell-ol6hb 3 жыл бұрын
That’s true but if we look at examples in the fossil record, other predators who lived lifestyles similar to Azdarchids didn’t lose their ability to fly, like the giant storks of Flores for example. I think the reason this is the case is because they are predators, predators use flight for hunting it’s why they evolved flight, as opposed to prey animals who usually evolve flight mainly as a way to escape predators that’s why whenever the opportunity arises for them to safely give up the ability to fly herbivorous birds do lose their ability to fly.

Nope. Dixon depicts all his pterosaurs as having strong hind legs, like the ones seen in avian dinosaurs. This isn’t how pterosaur anatomy works at ALL. Pterosaurs have phenomenally weak back legs, to the point where they were mainly walking on their wings. So, though it is possible that some species would have become fully terrestrial, they wouldn’t look anything like the ones in Dixon’s book. Also, why not just use a dinosaur??? Why is it that the only secondarily flightless creatures are pterosaurs??? It’s like he completely ignored the fact that birds are LITERALLY dinosaurs, he doesn’t even mention it once in his book. In cas espy haven’t noticed, I kinda hate the New Dinosaurs, mostly because of its janked anatomy and dubious science that should have been clear even back in the olden days. I love the stuff he did with After Man, but dude, why’d he have to fuck up the dinosaurs so bad???

Hey, if you really do end up making that video on the Speculative Dinosaur Project, feel free to contact me for details and behind the scenes info. I was one of the founding members in Spec, one of the main artists and idea people, and stuck around for a long while, though I wasn't very active in the later years when the website maintenance side of things began to collapse. Plus I know the people working on restoring the old site as well.

Feel free to dm on my social media accounts in the description. Thanks!

I think the fact animals look abnormal in the finished book IS the problem. These aren't monsters, these are animals, they should be showed as such, as just animals. Just because they aren't what we used to, doesn't mean we shouldn't think of them as animals. This abnormality thing affects paleo-art, and books like All New Yesterdays are trying to debunk it.

14:13 16:16 He seemed kinda obsessed with "Gold plating" and large flaps at the time as with these two examples. Also a lot of the dinosaurs sport a golden color. I think some of the designs are "too designed" as they have a chimera-like appearance with multiple parts put together which doesn't look that cohesive. I think speculative biology tend to become a bit too fantasy-like in that they don't look at extant animals and realize that despite the occasional extraoridnary structure, such as horn beetles and feathers on paradise birds, the animals overall retain a rather conservative body plan. Hence I find the designs somewhat uncanny although I understand that it's more cost efficient to allocate a lot of novelty to fewer designs for the sake of display and discussion on the concepts these books shed a light on.

I agree with you there. But I got another point to draw from. He took far to much inspiration from mammals when designing the animals. Like you could see more that subtle parallels he made with a few of the specimens with modern mammals. That in my opinion diminishs the fact that these are dinosaurs.

One bit of trivia that may interest you is that "After Man" might have been such an easy sell to Dougal's publisher because of the huge success, four years earlier, of the English-language edition of Wil Huygen's "Gnomes". Both books were gorgeously-illustrated, realistic, and comprehensive documentary-style coffee table volumes about fictional creatures, and Dixon's work may have been accepted for publication mainly because "Gnomes"'s bestseller status proved there was a popular market for such books.

Oh hey, it's lovely to see people your age getting into this stuff! If you are interested in this kind of stuff the specbio community is growing all the time and they may be able to help you find these books. While a lot of specbio is fun and games, it can also help test theories people have about their understanding of evolution. A few years ago someone drew a speculative filter feeding anomalocarid, a couple of years prior to a fossil one actually being discovered! If humans can speculate accurately in some ways on that, it lends credence to the idea that our understanding of biology may be improving. IIRC the main objection to the Lank was actually that the way the bones were arranged in the front limbs didn't match how pterasaurs would most likely evolve. They would have to change from putting their weight on the hands to putting it on the fingertip of the fourth digit, and Dixon doesn't explain how or why or give a good reason for this evolutionarily speaking. I would love to see a breakdown of the specdino project. There seemed to be Some Shit going down...

I'm writing a book series where, due to the Old Ones being a bunch of homicidal maniacs, the only inhabited planet in the galaxy that wasn't destroyed by them during a civil war was Earth as they weren't aware of its existence. A structure they built and which caused their civil war, called Loki by the humans that found it because of it being confusing and tricky, was made to create portals to suitable planets in the galaxy, send machines in to terraform them, leave them for a bit, and then open up portals again so that the Old Ones and the species they had symbiotic relationships with could go through and colonise a perfect world for them. Due to programming errors / wear and tear + awareness of its own wear and tear, it was able to go through the following logic when it found Earth: - No Old Ones on planet - I lost information on what an Old One world is meant to be like - But Old Ones destroyed all life - I have memory gaps due to wear and tear - Must be a planet I terraformed and forgot about - So I must terraform worlds to be like it in the hopes that some lost Old Ones find it and can colonise it. - Also sure let the animals through any lost Old Ones might not have their symbiotic species with them so hopefully new symbiotes can be found. Intelligent alien species that form on these worlds, ones that aren't on earth getting to wonder why the fossil record starts out of nowhere and either has nothing previously or has a giant gap before there are totally different creatures (religious fervor go brrr), once they achieve space flight and see all these habitable worlds that shouldn't be there: *"It's free real estate also religious fervor go brrrrr but even more."* And that, combined with evolution, is why the level of evolutionary speculative ability that should be required by this setting is way beyond what I'm actually any good at. Therefore bring me Dougal Dixon I require his brain.

Well... Dixon did it backwards from your assumption. He did "this is cool", then worked backwards to figure out how to make it work. For example, it's unlikely bats would be flightless because they have several handicaps that birds don't have.

For those wanting to listen to a comprehensive summary of another book on speculative evolution-All Tomorrow’s by C.M. Jose man is excellent. Alt Shift X did a video on it. Also, all of the thumbnails present at 2:22 are from Trey the Explainers channel.

I believe there was a Discovery Channel series covering speculative evolution, showing what animals could look like in 10,000 years. Don't remember what it was called though..

I'd love a crossover between after man and man after man where a natural disaster (perhaps an nuclear war that mutates humans into animalistic forms) wipes out civilisation but humanity and nature live alongside each other

I have a question. What if the animals from After Man were placed in our world? How would they interact with modern animals from today?

Don't forget the dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals of Peter Jackson's king kong? they're kinda speculative evolution as well like the vastatosaurus rex for example it's said to be the descendant of the tyrannosaurus rex

God those illustration are unholy ! As much as i love the concept behind those books, i just can't stand looking at their illustration ; they simply bring back memories of another book, i once found when i was 4 on some shelf at home, with all kind of potential alien-life (and among others, a blood-sucking alien wall !) It was the most unholy thing i ever looked at, and still terrifies me to this day. SO GOD WHY AM I SO FASCINATED BY SPECULATIVE ZOOLOGY ?!! It's the stuff of nighmares, but damned, i can't get enough of it. . .
