During the late eighties and early nineties, Japanese manufacturers had great success in motorsport. They had great success in Formula 1, rallying and other forms of racing, but one event had eluded them.
This was the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but in 1991 Mazda’s 787B crossed the line in first place, making it the first Japanese car and only rotary powered car to win the event.
Despite all odds the 787B came out on top. Its only problems during the race were a blown headlamp bulb and a precautionary wheel bearing change. In fact, the rotary engine inside the car was in such good condition Mazda claimed that it could do another 24-hour race without any maintenance.
The Mazda 787B is an icon of the motoring world. It was David battling Goliath and will forever be remembered for its incredible win at Le Mans and its monstrous sound that can’t be mistaken for another car.
Along with creating this video, we have also written an article on the complete history of the Mazda 787B as well - garagedreams.n...

@@kakerake6018 I agree but the turbine engine was so much faster than the other cars it was able to lap the other cars multiple times. It would be the equivalent of riding a 750cc in a race with 150cc. In F1 the skirt on Mario Andretti's car made it easier for him to win but it also took a lot of skill. Nascar is boring to watch at home and it doesn't loot that difficult to do but it takes a lot of skill to go that fast.

One aspect I found of particular interest was the hard driving the 787B did to win the Le Mans race, where it compelled the front-runners to slow down with conserving fuel. For the rotary powered 787B to be more fuel-efficient than the conventional internal combustion engines flies in the face of the reputation Mazda had with its rotary-powered passenger vehicles; where equivalent sized Japanese vehicles in the 1980s were getting 40 percent better fuel mileage than the rotary-powered Mazda vehicles.

It’s the best thing when KZbin recommends me a great video, just subscribed! Would love to see a video explaining the unicorn from BMW, the E46 M3 GTR, the car that ran a controversial season at ALMS in 2001 because of its high-revving V8 engine under its hood, how it won the 24 Hrs of Nurburgring back to back in 2004 and 2005, and how that car influenced BMW to put a V8 in the E9X M3.. I love the videos that are out there now but they mostly talk in relation to the hero car from Need for Speed Most Wanted, I feel like that topic has been talked about a lot but not enough is talked about the actual race car that competed, or the mysterious homologation examples that some say were never even built! BMW only made three production-ready examples, making them to this day the most exclusive cars ever pushed out of the factory! That car deserves more recognition, it’s a legend!

Its peak power - claimed to be 900 hp - is an irrelevance which has caught too many people out because they know nothing about Group C. The deciding factor in Group C was _fuel consumption_ because Group C was a fuel allocation formula, not an unlimited one. For 1,000 kms or six hour races, the maximum fuel allowance was 600 litres. For the 24 hours of Le Mans it was 2,500 litres. There's only one thing you get with increased power: increased fuel consumption. Otherwise, why would Mercedes have bothered with small turbochargers and 720 hp? The things you don't hear about the 787B particularly include the fact that it was hard to drive. It had no power steering and the steering was extremely heavy, which is why Johnny Herbert did not make it to the post race celebrations. He was exhausted. When tested by Belgian motoring journalist and former racing driver, Paul Frere, Frere noted the particularly heavy steering and gear change. To sum it up, the Mazda 787B has garnered a reputation rather beyond what it was worth, much of it based on its fabulous looks and a rather gullible public who don't know much about Group C. Nobody was happier than I was when it won but it needs to be kept in context. It was a long way from being as good as Sauber or Jaguar and light years away from what Porsche achieved with the 956/962. Finally, the engine shriek, so worshipped by the internet - most of whom have never heard an R26B in real life - was almost universally reviled by spectators. It was, IMHO, a horrible sound with no harmonics at an ear splitting level. It was several times louder than any other car and wore out its welcome very quickly. I understand it even made the mechanics ill.

Finally a video that properly describes this car in-depth.Truly amazing work.Speaking of cars we wanna see,if you're interested, then i'd like that you include Nobuhiro Tajima's Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak and Georg Plasa's BMW E36 Judd V8. One is mainly recognized by Gran Turismo players while other turned many into hillclimb fans and actually was taken as a watershed for building a fast and competitive hillclimb race car.If possible,in-depth videos of these two legendary hillclimb monsters.

The truth was, it was a bit rubbish and only won Le Mans because of a fair amount of misfortune befalling technically superior and simply faster rival machines. Still a great piece of racing history and an interesting story.

Given the undulating layout of the Nürburgring, it was no surprise of one of the Mazdas to drop out due to an axle problem. An 84 hour race seems like the ultimate motorsport nightmare with logistics, crews, drivers; and keeping count of the laps driven.

It’d be very cool if one brand or team tries to win them all in one calendar year… F1, LeMans, Rally and Nascar… I’d personally love to see the VW Group try this: VW Lamborghini F1, VW Porsche LeMans, VW Golf Rally and VW Audi Nascar 🏆

Awesomely informative documentary! It’s a shame even if rotaries aren’t the greatest for normal cars, such a great engine for racing basically got shelved for much more R&D. It’d be awesome to see what rotaries could be with another 30 yrs of development...
