This pattern always makes me think of the “sphere” helmets. I’d really like a series just on Russian helmets because the designs ranges from extremely practical to questionable, but they’re all so interesting.

Not really about VSR, but why was/is Russia using so many foreign camoflages? (Flecktarn, DPM, Woodland, UCP, Multicam etc.)

Everyone likes to experiment. They could take inspiration from patterns and cuts like everyone else.
@matasaga9715
@matasaga9715 4 жыл бұрын
Russia uses a recolored version of Flecktarn, usually called Izlom. The copy of DPM is/was called Kukla (which has a blue version as well). Bear in mind there are multiple names for most Russian camos. Only a few random pieces of gear are made in Woodland, and I’ve never seen UCP being used. Multicam is used by many SF units, for the same reason so many other countries use it (it’s just good). I wish I could tell you why Russia uses so many different camouflage patterns of various origin, but only God knows.

@@matasaga9715 If someone could cite a reason why somebody in Russia would actually spend effort making a fucking BLUE dominant camouflage pattern on a uniform... yeah, that'd be great...

Spetsnaz are reported using Multicam from Russia-Georgia conflict until Russian intervention in Syria, but it seems that they modified it so probably when take a look closer it would seem quite different than original (US) counterpart. The Internal Troops are reported using many types of camo pattern although they did not have standard issue camo pattern. Russian Airborne Forces (VDV) somehow using the blue DPM-like pattern, but during Syrian conflict they're started using Russian Flora like Ground Forces. Well kinda confused about how Russian military trying getting into so much camo pattern even though they're made their own and standardized it but so much foreign pattern that we've seen until now

The bewildering range of colors of VSR is probably explained by the last explanation #3...utter confusion at the production level and the cutting of many corners in production (remember, at this point just after the fall of USSR they were having trouble even feeding the troops) and the supply system being less concerned about colors as the fact that the uniforms provided would work to clothe the troops. It's extremely likely that many "variants" were simply printed with whatever colors were available and "close enough" and somebody slipped a few rubles to somebody else to look the other way. A little baksheesh went a long way in Russian Federation circa mid 1990's. I knew a guy who was going over there with suitcases full of Levi's and coming back with suitcases full of amber jewelry and was shipping back cases of brand new army gear. All he had to do was put a $50 bill in each suitcase before he hit customs and "no problem, pass through". A friendly Customs Officer would pass anything military through for (IIRC) the latest VHS movies and some of the latest western rock and roll on CD. I'm talking night vision, uniforms, medals, anything but guns or ammo.

All the VSR patters are actually good. Instead of creating one standardized design that works in only one area and the enemy knowing exactly what type of pattern to look out for, they would have to be on guard for anything with the 50 different patterns out to getcha.

the idea behind the uniform for the ministry of emergencies was to have a standardized, highly visible, easily recognizable wear. So "standard" (or uniform, if I may ;) ) because it follows the same pattern as the standard military equipment, bright coloured because those guys are not soldiers,(although trained in weapons) they are experts in emergency medicine, rescue etc. A sort of mix between firefighters, rescuers and paramedics.

There's just one problem, the 1990s Russian Army had to rebuild their manpower pool from scratch resulting in poor quality.standard infantry (excluding spetsnaz, airborne, marines, and other elite units). "Pilots had only 25 to 30 hours of flight training." www.historyofwar.org/articles/weapons_russianarmy1990.html Also standard infantry units were 50% undermanned. 75% of equipment was outdated. The officers sold a bunch of equipment to civilians to make money. The 1990s Russian army was just awful and would be likely outperformed by and late 1970s-mid 1980s soviet unit.
