The UK didn't rip it off, MultiCam performed best in the UK's testing so the MoD approached Crye to co-design a UK specific variant of MultiCam incorporating DPM shapes into the pattern. Similar situation with Australia I believe. New Zealand have recently announced their pixelated multi terrain pattern is being replaced by a darker colouration variant of British MTP, called NZMTP. One of the major companies that did rip off multicam is Russia, but they rip off everything, they've copied Flecktarn, US Woodland, A-TACS, and even Finland's M05 pattern but they pretend they didn't.

The best part about the army wasting billions of dollars to just go to scorpion w2 is they paid even more to have a camo pattern that's less effective than multicam.
@G1NZOU5 жыл бұрын
Technically they paid less, since they own Scorpion W2 they save on royalties, granted it's a small saving but they're not paying more. Multicam OEF-CP was an interim solution so they didn't purchase that many of them, just enough to equip the deployed troops, to outfit the rest of the Army (and the Air Force in due course) would mean printing a ton more fabric, and that royalty cost creeps up. The real waste was UCP, Scorpion W2 may be slightly less effective than actual MultiCam but in reality it's pretty much just as good, the detection scores weren't that much lower and the colouration of Scorpion W2 is close enough to MultiCam that it can be used with compatible gear.
@Fede_uyz3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, as the other guy said w2 did cost a bit more upfront but they will save up in the long term. And thanks to the UCP ABU debucle, congress is not gonna authorize any new camouflage pattern any time soon. They just need to develop a more arid version, maybe taking OCP and making all colors tans and coyote, while increasint the size slightly.

Interesting. I was a foreigner attached to US 10 Mtn Div in Afghanistan in 2010. They were the first to be wearing OEF MC. Some guys were already in location (working with UK 6 Div) and they were in UCP. They eventually transitioned. Then one day I saw an Aussie in MC despite the rest of the contingent being in their pinkish bunny cam. He was SASR and said they were all wearing it. Then the Brits in the HQ all switched to UK MTP virtually overnight. Seemed to be a trend. An American friend mentioned that the uniforms were tightly controlled and they'd have to turn them all in immediately on returning to CONUS. In my country (Canada) our counter terr group and the Special Operations Regt wear MC while deployed. The way we're going with this (and France switching to HK 416s) all the free world will be wearing a similar uniform and carrying an AR variant rifle...

When I joined the Army in early 2006 BDU's were still being worn until 2007 but we were issued a mix of ACU and BDU's. When I deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 we got Multicam uniforms and when I was getting out in 2014 was around the time they were designing and I believe some units got the new Scorpion design. Its crazy just in 8 years how there had been 4 complete redesigns on camo lol. I'm sure they will change the pattern again in another 3 years.

OCP (either variant) truly looks like the true heir of the BDU's but adapted to the 21 century army and combat. it truly looks like an army uniform. In my country the army picked up an acu style uniform but in colors closer to ocp, whereas the swat forces of the police picked up an acu rip off, which is much more understandable, since ACU looks much more like an urban pattern than a wilderness one

I remember going to basic and seeing the OCP pattern and I fell in love with it. I, along other trainees and Drill Sergeants, agreed that the UCP camo was ineffective in a lot of locations. I tested how well the OCP can hide a person once during one of our FTX and volunteered to be OPFOR for the training. I hid in tall grass and dirt that had dead leaves on it and the BLUFOR trainees just walked on by me while I just laid there on my elbows watching them. They came into contact with the other OPFOR guy and they took cover near me. Needless to say they had a long discussion with the Drill about situational awareness. I saw it as the OCP being effective.

This is way better than the ACU pattern we had before. But an even better pattern was invented back in the 80’s called ASAT - for All Seasons All Terrain. The problem with most camo patterns is that from any great distance the individual pattern can’t be distinguished they tend to just “blob” into a general shape. Take a picture of two people standing next to each other from say 300 meters - have one person in multicam and the other in ASAT. From any great distance you can easily see the superiority of ASAT.

Well, they only made a few of each for the test, it doesn't cost much, even for an average income-earner standard, to print a uniform. In masses, the US Army usually only use two patterns (desert/tan and olive green). They only have one when the UCP was a standard. Now they're going with three colors - transitional, woodland, and desert. The current Scorpion camo is a transitional pattern, which excels a dry environment with a lot of vegetation.

I added a subdued snap to the center of the ACU combat pants large leg pocket because the velcro alone could not hold the pants pocket closed securely esp when the velcro became worn. I am not a big fan of the slant pockets on the shirt from on the ACU uniforms. I like the old square pockets of the earlier bdu uniform but secure with velcro because buttons would be too bulky under body armor or load bearing vest. Apparently one of the new uniforms tested dropped the shirt chest pockets completely.

I always assumed the ucp uniform was more efficient because it was using pixels to mess with the idea more. the eye naturally tries to create order and shapes out of anything and it causes illusions. I thought the pixels would cause from far away another's eye to suffer from this scattered effect to cause a illusion helping to conceal them. I guess I was wrong. It wasn't a bad Idea on paper honestly. We use pixels all the time and it does so. I guess for camo you must use more Earthy visuals and not computer instead.

Marpat is good, but expensive, since 2 patterns per Marine have to be issued. Both woodland Marpat and Desert Marpat, that is 6 set of uniform in total. The Army only wants to issue 3 sets per soldier, so 1 universal pattern OCP was chosen. Also multicam/ OCP became popular, because a patrol could face 4 different terrains in 1 day: mountain, desert, woodland and urban. So a Jack of all trades, eehhh terrains was necessary. I can see why someone would think it might be a good idea to have a pattern design to use universally, and all you need to do is change the colors pattern. It would save time making a design when all you have to do is make everything pixelated and tell a computer to make a pattern color for the new environment. The problem is... nature tells us this is a bad idea. You can't make a universial pattern. Everything must be specialized for the location and task you are doing specifically. Just look at gators , black bears, cougar, tigers, and etc. for proof. You must allow specialization.

I always thought the whole ww2 German Wehrmacht and SS splinter pattern and 44 dot and the rest of the camouflages were good and very innovative. Have we considered their patterns? Or ideas of how they came up with those patterns?
@UniformHistory6 жыл бұрын
ANTICOMM many people consider Scorpion to be a sort of successor to some of the German patterns seen throughout WWII as it mimics some of the shapes and ideas behind them. They did pretty much jumpstart the whole idea behind a lot of camouflage today as far as their testing and research so even though the US doesn’t directly use any from then a lot of what has been used can be sourced back to Germany.

Some of the ww2 German camo's were designed by a landscape painter.

@@UniformHistory multicam has a background of large blobs of macro pattern with a micropattern of dots on top of it. it pretty much follows the waffen ss formula of camo design

Can you do a video on HM Forces combat jackets? I used to have a DPM one that I regret giving up (why did I do that?) I now have an MTP one for photography and dog training. As a civvy I love the cut of it, it's just so flipping useful. Who designed it? Have other nations adopted it in their own colours?

This is one of the funniest things when it comes to US military procurement decisions. It's like so many other mistakes the US military has made. Forcing 7.62mmNATO is another one, and they partially replaced that with 5.56mmNATO when they noticed 7.62 (a derivative of .30-06) was too heavy to carry in adequate quantities and too powerful for the expected engagement ranges (something EVERY OTHER COUNTRY HAD CONCLUDED after WWII with their old rifle cartridges). The decision to make the M1 carbine semi-auto-only, even though it would arguably have been the first assault rifle in widespread use. The decision to make M1 Garand use en-bloc clips instead of detachable magazines, even though this was an option. The entire initial process of adopting the M-16... And I'm certain there are numerous others, but can't summon them from memory...
@kyranhambly35265 жыл бұрын
they made the creators of the fn fal change the calibre to 308 then chose not to adopt it.
@leonardwei39145 жыл бұрын
M1 Carbine is fine as a semi-automatic. It's original role was supposed to be for support and specialized troops, not front line use that it slowly became accepted as. The full automatic setting didn't add much to the platform, not without some substantial redesigns needed. En bloc clips on the M1 Garand is fine, if you are going to stick with the 30-06 cartridge on semi-automatic rifle developed in the late 20's, early 30's.You can make the argument the M14 was basically a M1 Garand with a box magazine, and we all know how unsuccessful as an infantry rifle it turned out to be.

The en-block system was a good logistical choice and more reliable than most magazines back then. It made little difference for practical rate of fire. And the M1 carbine design was a poor choice for full automatic. One of the other competitors for the contract was the Hyde Model 1, and was a superior design for select fire. That would have been an excellent basic weapon for light infantry, especially Airborne and Rangers,Raiders etc.

I play Roblox and a lot of the accessories and clothing with the OCP camo are labeled as MixPat, is that also a camo? Or is that just another name for OCP?.
@myretroworld11213 жыл бұрын
So what is the current uniform? OCP?

At 1:30 you showed a new camo for border guards. Its probably a mix of multicam and flectarn.

In the AF, got to say the Scorpion camo is a much needed change. The tiger stripe has no use, literally. Love the more work friendly advantages of the OCP, and the more Military look of it too. ABUs are ugly and too much like an office uniform. I get the chair force meme but most of my branch are mechanics. The Noner desk worker minority should not dictate the uniform of my branch.

Putting the FLC over the IOTV will never cease to flip my anger switch. The whole point of the IOTV is that it comes apart in an emergency if you pull the cord in front. It absolutely defeats the purpose to put a vest on over that.

Why was Atacs-AU never considered?
@joebutta75395 жыл бұрын
Most likely Digital Concealment Systems, LLC submitted camo but wanted more money than crye did for their patent initially so it wasn't considered for the contract. The original AU (Arid Urban) design HAS been tested by some US special operations personnel, and is also being fielded by special forces units of Afghanistan, along with their nemisis HyperStealth Biotech Group (had a big court battle over infringement) Also that "transition period" (where the new camo would be used with UCP) made it more difficult for the atacs family of camo to work well alongside of the UCP do to the large patterns utilized. I prefer the atacs-iX personally, but great family of camo no doubt. Russians are wearing nockoff ATACS in syria right now btw.

Hated the ACUs big time! They sucked in Iraq. The only good thing was for uniform ID during daytime combat. All the old stuff we gave to the Iraqi Army and Police. I first saw the Multicam pattern back in 1999 at the SHOT show in Las Vegas. This was better than the BDU and DCU patterns. Multicam was used by the 173rd Airborne for experiments during that time in late 07-08. The guys in the Stan were issued this stuff late 08. I retired from the Army in 09 and never got issued the new OCP a.k.a Multicam US version.
