Nah. The 360 era was the beginning of the end for Consoles (at least for Sony and Microsoft). This was when consoles increasingly became the poor man's PC, where you had to install the games to a storage drive and then deal with periodic updates (which back then in particular were ass slow). All the while you had to pay for online multiplayer (something that was always free on PC). Yes, there were hints of this earlier on, particularly with the original Xbox, but it was the 360 era where this was adopted in earnest. I would argue that the generation where consoles peaked was the PS2 era. The PS2 era was the last generation where if you wanted to game on console you just threw the game into the console and turned it on and it just ran. This was a massive advantage over PC gaming and later generations just threw it away like it was nothing.

The XBox 360 was the XBox hardware series at its absolute peak. It remains the best-selling American-made console in gaming history, and the only time they managed to outperform Playstation----at least in the U.S. But the software lineup was strongest during this era, the third-party support was amazing, and there was great variety.

An important asterisk to remember regarding the sales of these two consoles is that we never got the final numbers for the 360. Both MS and Sony stopped reporting numbers before the XB1 and PS4 released. At that time the 360 was several million ahead of the PS3. Then, years later, Sony suddenly updated the PS3 numbers by like 7 million putting it past the 360. Microsoft never gave a likewise update. The XBox360 likely sold several million more after the One launched, Microsoft even continued to market the 360 as a budget option. But we'll likely never know how many more millions it sold

That Kinect was really the seller for me and my parents, even though I already had a PS3 and a Wii. I saw that I could have “active” play and stay inside and drilled hard for it and got one for Christmas in either 2010 or 2011. Being a literal child, I loved the avatar making and screwing around in Kinect Adventures and Wipeout. I never got serious into the 360 til my PS3’s disk drive broke and we bought the 360 versions of some games to keep playing them. And then Minecraft

My favourite generation. I grew up on PS1 and PS2 but when 360/PS3 came out, I was old enough to buy both consoles and the games I wanted. Online play was mind blowing! CoD2 and CoD 3 were my first online experiences and made some good friends. Halo 3, Halo Reach, World at War and Black Ops 1 was as good has it could get. Everything since has gone downhill 😢

The console wars for me goes like this, I had a SNES because my Mom owned an SNES, My dad was like, "Fuck all those consoles! I'M GETTING THE ATARI JAGUAR!" Then he played it a few times and never touched it again... I owned a N64 because my mom owned an N64, but my dad wanted a PS1 so we got a N64 and PS1, My dad wanted a PS2 so we got a ps2, but my mom for christmas got me a Gamecube that was my console, My dad got the xbox later on, later on in high school I come home one day and my dad has the xbox 360 connected to the TV playing pacman, that was our console, later on my Mom gets a Wii out of fucking nowhere so we had the Xbox 360 and Wii. My dad leaves my mom when I'm a senior in high school, he buy a ps3 I got to try it once or twice, eh I was good with my Xbox 360, which my dad left, which all my friends had except one later on we got a ps3 again when it was like dirt cheap. My friends and I all decide to get a PS4 for the next generation, I got one for college grades being good and because I could with Financial aid was also a motivator for me to do good in college for myself, because xbox one was kind eh. My mom gets the wii U, she loved nintendo stuff, and never once complained about the wii U hell she took it to work with her plugged the console in at her desk and would play it on the gamepad. My mom passes away from cancer, but guaranteed we would have gotten a switch, (which I got anyways with College financial aid money), and here we are now... Switch, PS5, Xbox series consoles... I am now a PC gamer with a switch because now PS5 and Xbox series consoles don't really have much, Spider-man 2 and god of war ragnarok will come out later on pc, and everything on xbox comes to PC immediately on release date with the console release, hell you get PC game pass and you get most of these games included day 1. As for Portable consoles, well we had all the portable consoles from the 2 that mattered Nintendo and Sony's 1 portable that mattered to me. So that also wasn't a thing for me console warring on which was better. The variety of games the nintendo portables had were great, and PSP was a lot of ported games to portable console. Long story short, my "console warring" didn't exist because I just had most consoles because my parents loved video games the only consoles I never owned were sega ones which the only sega console I feel like I missed out on or wanted was a dreamcast, and now i'm just kinda eh towards consoles, but if I had to throw my hat in on xbox 360 vs PS3, I would say xbox 360 won because my friends had it, it had a really good arcade/store (aside from the points system being eh), the exclusive games were far more interesting that sony had, the online you had to pay for but was stable, and it had pretty good backwards compatibility later on. If there is one thing I can say about microsoft's consoles the backwards compatibility with them is insanely good compared to Playstation, hell sony's CEO said, "WHY DO YOU WANT TO PLAY OLD GAMES?! We have new ones right there!"

Microsoft lost a lot of money during the 360 era. They had no studios, and paid a lot for third party exclusives. Now they have studios, and 2 big publishers, and they are now in third place in revenue behind Tencent and Sony. They are more successful now financially and ABK is bringing in that quarterly financial revenue that the CEO and exec board loves. ABK mobile= 💰 💪

I bought the Xbox 360 first and had a great time for about a year and then it gave me the red ring of death which I had to repair it almost every month and after that the hard disk stopped working and nobody could repair it, so I threw away the Xbox in the garbage and picked up a ps3 and had so much more fun with it for years and never faced any problems with it.

I think the Xbox 360 was the last time Microsoft truly felt competitive, putting out defining titles and innovating in the online space. Even I who has been fed Nintendo milk for all my life played my brother's 360 fairly consistently for a number of years. It was when the Xbox One was initially revealed that pretty much destroyed their chances of ever being on top again, with no compelling games and such a dystopian structure with its policies on no used games, always being online, and caring way more about being a streaming box than an actual gaming platform. If you wanted a streaming box, just get a Roku player. It was a tenth of the price! Even after they reversed that initiative and focused on games again, it was too late. There were barely any notable exclusives, and the ones they did have typically disappointed in one way or another, released the same day on PC, or both. Sony and Microsoft are both in an equally bad place right now with their current consoles, but it's pretty obvious why Sony continues to come out on top by comparison.

You forgot to mention PS+. PS+ was an absolute killer feature by the end of the PS3 lifecycle. Games were literally put into PS+ afer a couple of months after ther release. Like Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, BF3 or Far Cry 3. It was better then pirating. Nowadays PS+ is really shitty with bearly one good game in a year.

I was a playstation guy but I chose 360 because at least for the first three years PS3 output was abysmal, not to mention the price and third party games always running better on the 360. Only halfway through the PS3 lifecycle did PS3 pick up steam and take over.

Look at that smug look on Bill Gates face. That was always Microsoft, wanting to dip their little rat claws into whatever business they could. I originally wanted the original Xbox and my buddy, then a big GameCube fan, told me Microsoft was the devil, he was right, and I got the Xbox, not for Halo, but enjoyed it. So, when I heard about the 360, wow! Got one enjoyed it for what it was, kind of mocked the PS3, even though I had a PS1 and really liked it much more than N64 but also liked the Saturn. I didn't really bash the PS3 though, I just couldn't afford it and didn't like the Wii...... Until I played the PS3. It was worth $500. Totally worth it and then the 360 just became secondary. The more that went on, I realized by buddy was right, even though he got an Xbox 360 and I had both, but preferred the PS3. But, as time went on the more I hated what Microsoft brought to the gaming world. I hated their services, their business practices, and their mentality of screwing consumers over. To this day, I really can't see the love of Xbox for some, Microsoft are cons, but today, PlayStation is more the big dog. Kids talk about their PS5 and their Switch and Xbox, today? Is a sexual term. To say Xbox means you're doing something lewd so, that's what's happening to the Xbox brand. To see them go software only is what's best for gaming. PlayStation isn't going to take over the world. Sony knows their hardware and they've got competition from Nintendo and Valve. Yeah, the neutral ground everyone's decided they want to like, especially for an Xbot, nah, you ignorant little man, Nintendo just quietly went to work and operated in the shadows taking Xbox's market share, and you thought it was all Sony? You just thought that because Xbox wanted to be like PlayStation and would copy them so they seemed so much alike, but Nintendo is just as much a part of the success of gaming as PlayStation. Xbox is what's wrong with the industry and they have the two biggest giants backing them the whole way EA and Activision, why? Because it was about the money, never about the consumer and Xbots are seeing right now how Microsoft really felt about them and that they were just tools, their loyalty..... They're gonna have abandonment issues

The Xbox One (a truly stupid name for it being their 3rd console) was a massive failure for a lot of reasons. Even now, the PlayStation has always had an edge against the Xbox.

Looking back, the PS3 won...but it kinda didn't. A lot of exclusive support went multiplatform. They lost billions of dollars selling hardware at a loss. They went from selling 150+ million to with the PS2 to selling 80+ million. From a gamer standpoint, I'd arguably say the PlayStation won (depends on which games you prefer). From a business standpoint, I'd say Xbox won. They actually made a tiny profit, increased their sales by three times, and dominated the United States market. They were just weaker everywhere else. Especially Japan.

I started out with an Xbox 360 which I bought in early 2009, and I eventually switched to PS3 in early 2012. There are a couple reasons I made the switch: Sony had better exclusives, and the Twisted Metal game that released that year was one that I especially wanted. Another reason I switched to PS3 is because I didn’t want to pay to play online. I still have my PS3 to this day, and I have recently been buying some PS3 games that I never got around to playing in the past since most modern games have been pathetic.

No it did not. You cannot count replaced consoles as new sales. Sony recently counted Best Buy inventory as console sold. A Japanese business analyst said that Sony is inflating the number of consoles sold and that there are warehouses in Japan filled with PS5s. Currently 17 million PS5s that they claimed they sold are not turned on. They also counted the portal as console sold. We need an investigation into Sony business practices.

You're surprised a console lost to a box that made online mandatory. Had disabling DRM and made a lame camera mandatory? Also let's not forget before the red ring of death the Xbox Hitachi drives were ruining expensive discs by putting massive grooves in them. Also let's not forget the famous Sony line people will get another job to purchase a PS3! Mistakes were a plenty on BOTH sides, it's pure mass and numbers the PS3 won. It played the mighty Blu-Ray discs which won out to the other issue Xbox had.... HD-DVD. You seemed to not mention all these issues, it's as though you were a child and weren't there directly to witness the fustercluck these two companies were 😅. P.S.... you also didn't mention the YLOD which occurred later in the PS3 life cycle. That really only affected the piano models though.

Sony beat 360 sales flat out and that's WITH people like my nephew having to buy 3 of them because two red-ringed lol. As of March 2017, the PS3 had moved 87.4 million units, surpassing the final recorded Xbox 360 tally of 84 million in 2014. Who knows what those machines racked up in terms of late sales over the past five years, but it's remarkable to discover how close they were to each other all by the final accounting.Apr 26, 2019

Yep, the computer company who brought gamers Xbox live excluded a cheap wireless 802.11g adapter! Sony had made that mistake with the PS2 and had learned their lesson. That's not alright for a company who's console is named after Direct X who built the console as a "home media device" to exclude wireless in 2005 lol. Winning......
