The PS3 is a fantastic system with cutting edge hardware and great library of games. More importantly the console has the best comeback in gaming history unlike the Xbox One, Wii U and Sega Saturn.

You're overstating it a bit. Yes, the CPU was exotic but everything else about it was compromised and hacked together at the last minute. The RSX was a weak cut down GeForce 7 GPU with gimped memory bandwidth and was itself only tacked on at the last minute when Sony finally came to their senses and realized using a second Cell as a GPU was a really dumb idea. Every other problem with the system was a result of trying to make this change without the ground up redesign it really needed. The memory couldn't be unified because of Cell's weird proprietary memory interface so letting software dynamically allocate a single pool of GDDR was out of the question. There's also the issue that the RSX was a significantly less forward thinking design than the ATI based xenos in the 360 as it lacked unified shaders. The Cell ultimately hurt more than it helped. If Sony would have at least spent the time and money to get a custom Cell that could interface with GDDR memory and unified the memory pool, that would have been of tremendous help to devs even if there was still the issue of needing to spin up threads to utilize the SPEs.

The story behind the PS3's comeback really does remind me of how the PlayStation saga started in the first place, when the PS1 was made basically in spite of betrayal, on Nintendo's part. It seems like a lot of the experiences Sony had as an underdog in the gaming industry in the 90s came back to help them turning the luck of the PS3 back. I'm not sure how things will go with the PS5 now that it just released a few days ago, but hopefully it won't see the many drama-filled events the third installment did.

Microsoft not wanting to have pc gaming as a concept or idea become overshadowed by the troubling hype of playstation, and speculation of the making of a Playstation2 refered to simply as ps2.. and letdown of the sega dc being an answer to the then thought to be a threat of a monopoly by sony in the probable thinking of bill gates jr..

"This console went against the grain of what developers wanted in a game console, and Sony took a financial risk by implementing the ps2 chip in the first models hardware. the cpu/gpu combo had the same architecture as the xbox 360(powerpc), but it's different specs and the way games were written for the ps3 was very time consuming for developers. most ps3 triple A games didn't have the best performance on there because utilizing the CELL processor meant rewriting their games completely. But when developers did utilize the chip, it gave us great games like the Uncharted series, and the last of us. because of this, console gaming is all pc based now (x86-64), with proprietary games and software. We have cross-play games because of Sony waiving the white flag to the console gaming industry, but it's not a bad thing, it's just what made the ps3 unique."

I have the slim, the best version imo. I got it on fb marketplace for very cheap. 2 consloes for 25 euros. Some grandpa was cleaning out his attic and found these systems belonging to his grandson, but the grandson didn't care about them, so he sold them. 1 was broken, and 1 is working, i got now an extra power supply and disk drive from that broken unit to keep my slim going. Still a great console, i don't have a 4 or a 5. The 3 is enough for me to this day.

If you ask me: long story short, the Slim combined with the DualShock 3 saved the console. Much cheaper, and was what people expected from the get-go, on top of finally getting some great games.

Sony was ass much an underdog as I am and actual dog. Everybody knows MS had inflated numbers: lots of people bough other 360's before MS admited to the ROD (even after, some just didn't want to wait and it was relatively cheap), and MS counted the refurbished ones as sales, so who know what's the real number ?

Probably for the better. Sony was bleeding money during the ps3 era because of the custom hardware inside it. Besides, people buy consoles to play games so a known architecture like x86 means that devs can get their engines and games up and running with as little effort as possible since games today are much more complex and expensive to produce.

I have always been loyal to Sony and when the PS3 came out it was so expensive and lacked the quality games while the 360 was doing amazing. It took the PS3 a few years to really get going but once it did it was undeniably producing the best exclusives. I never doubted for a second, never would I make Xbox my primary console. In fact I’ve only recently bought my first Xbox and never play it…not that it’s not good I am just super attached to PlayStation and always have been.

Sony saved the PS3 with first-party game exclusives... four years in, and the PS5 is suffering from the same issue. We only got Spider-man 2 and Astro Bot as good relevant games, the rest are just remasters and third-party temporary exclusives. I still hope Sony can turn the tide by the end of the generation, I'm in good hopes for Wolverine, Ghost of Tsushima 2 and Death Stranding 2. Let's also see what Santa Monica Studios and Naughty Dog are cooking for GoW and TLoU, respectively.

Kutaragi was a visionary for sure, but mistakes were made on the PS3. Kudos to the team for for turning that around. The only with video is that the cell it was designed for everything, including games. But nobody cares enough about the complexity of managing a SPU + Split Memory pool, while also taking care of the PPU and also the GPU + Split pool of memory on its side. I think they had took the PS2 Emotion Engine + Vector Units to an extreme way too far.

You forget to mention given the initial price tag and how the global Economy crashed and went into a deep recession as millions of people lost jobs homes .This further gives massive credit to how Sony saved the PS3 but also how the systems itself was a great technological experience in the end. Sorry but this is just an average documentary. You said it several times that XBox 360 was much easier to develop for due to the PS3's overly complex CPU architecture. We get it! I also don’t like it when the same video clips and pictures are being repeated over and over again in short succession. It gets boring quickly. And last but not least you could have mentioned more breakthrough titles that did help turning PS3's fortunes around. Like Uncharted 2, Killzone 2 or Gran Turismo 5. Sorry but this is just a 5/10 for me. Other KZbinrs have done a better job at this topic.

Its whole life cycle generated a lot of memorable exclusives Uncharted Trilogy Metal Gear Solid IV Little Big Planet The Last of Us God of War 3 infamous 1 and 2 There is more to mention but with these games mentioned above. Man, the PS3 sure is a console for a great single player experience, and that is saying something during the online multiplayer boom of the 7th Generation console of gaming.
