ABOUT KATE BINGAMAN-BURT
Kate Bingaman-Burt makes piles of work about the things that we BUY (and want) and the emotions attached to our STUFF. She also happily thinks and draws for good people and companies. She has been making work about consumption since 2002, teaching since 2004, and drawing until her hand cramps since 2006 (ouch). She is also an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at Portland State University.
Illustration is at the core of what she does, but her projects take on many forms including publications, prints, textiles, patterns, installations, murals, and ongoing photo documentation and crowd-sourced illustration projects.
Along with being an educator and illustrator, she organizes events, installations, and workshops. For her, teaching and making go hand in hand: Without one, the other wouldn’t exist. In the mid-90s, I subscribed to a quarterly art journal zine that ran only 400 copies. The topics covered were art journaling, art rubber stamping and Faux postage production. It included a tip-out page of faux postage stamps that were created by the contributing artists and subscribers, and the stamps were actually perforated by one of the artists who had a mechanical perforating machine. Usually it was a sheet of 24 Stamps, but sometimes it was 16, and sometimes 30. It was a very beautifully made zine, produced out of the love of art journaling, faux postage, and rubber stamping. I loved it, and so glad I subscribed. It ran for four years, I believe. What an absolutely beautiful time in my artful life. I cherish and protect my copies. Teesha Moore and her husband were the creators. They were a dynamic duo. ❤
