The fact that Nigel's home was cleaned in 2011 and now it is hoarded again, the mental part of it is still there. Seems like Nigel needs on going counseling to keep him from hoarding.

When it boils down to it, the clutter (as horrendous as it may be) is only the superficial part hiding underlying mental health issues (which can be rooted in trauma or may be just genetic predisposition.) You can clean a house but the condition is still there once the cleaners have left. And in actual fact the hoarder needs to be an active role in the decluttering process to help them mentally work through the reasons behind their attachment issues.

Getting into it, making hard decisions, actually tossing or putting away items, feeling the emotions as they emerge-if they don’t, two problems can emerge: 1) they won’t know what to do on their own next time, and 2) They can more easily blame the helpers for causing them distress and not take responsibility. I completely agree with processing the pain underneath the problem. Just sitting and thinking about, and focusing on sadness, distress, hopelessness, seem like a good thing initially, but in the end, it’s very helpful. A good cry helps. Acknowledging the pain buried within helps it emerge, be processed and released rather than requiring hoarding habits to cover it up.

I hoard stuff in boxes and put them in the attic. So my house looks nice and clear, but I still have so much stuff I can't seem to get rid of. Also with the thought: I can re-use that. Carton boxes, plastics, old clothing, broken jewelry and such. I think it is from back when I was young and we barely had any money. We had to reuse or repurpose everything. Now I have more money and can buy things new, but still keep the old and/or broken stuff. It is a habit that needs to be broken, cause I know I have money to buy things new, and I know I can't repurpose everything. But knowing it and acting on it are extremely difficult. Seeing these episodes do help me feel better about myself and motivate me to just try to gather up one more box to throw to the trash or secondhand store. Step by step.

Walk around your house and choose ten things to throw out every day. Every day. Or make that number 15, or 20 if you have to. And do it. Items of clothing; books; kitchen things; whatever. Just keep working at it. You won't miss those things, trust me.

I think you are doing great! Throwing stuff away that still has a use, is very hard. Maybe it helps you if you can donate things to churches or welfare workers? Then you have more space and stuff isn't just collecting dust!

Yes, if you haven't seen or touched these items in a year or more... Then to me, it seems you don't need it. And if it is something that someone else could actually use or something they may need, it would be better to donate it to needy people or people in unfortunate situations that can't afford it. It's not doing anyone any good piling up or in a box somewhere. But it sounds like you're on the right track. Best wishes to you!! 👏🏼🫂💐

When my mother's dementia worsened, she would walk around the neighborhood and pick up those large plastic toys for children and put them in her backyard. Her grandchildren are grown and there was no need for these toys. Who knows what was going through her mind. When I had to move her in with me, my adult son and his friends cleared out my mother's house. There was forty plus years of things that she cherished but she had forgotten about everything. My son kept the most important items and took the rest of it to the curb. All those years my mom worked her butt off and collected stuff only for it to all go to the curb. At least my mom couldn't remember any of it. She got to the point where she forgot everything including the house she had lived in for over forty years. She passed quietly in 2015. I took care of my mother for nearly seven years with no help at all from my siblings. I will never forgive them nor forget. Not that they have asked for forgiveness. I'll tell you something however, I believe what goes around comes around and two of my siblings died from cancer and one died from Alzheimer's. They suffered for quite a while too.

Ive seen Nigel 3 different times on these type of shows. One was The Hoarder Next Door and the 2011 show they mentioned and this one. Hope he's doing better, he creates beautiful things from the stuff he's got laying around

I recognized Nigel and I remember when this guy came in and cleaned his place. He could only get two rooms. Nigel did not want to let go of Harley anything. So they put the rest of the stuff into one room. The two rooms that the guy cleaned, were beautiful. He did a beautiful job on those two rooms. It’s too bad that he’s junk again. He’s so particular about his things but yet he throws everything around. It seem like everything had an extremely special meaning to it and he had a huge attachment to these things. That frustrated the cleaner, but he worked with Nigel and the results were amazing. It’s too bad that didn’t stay with Nigel. Anyway, I guess he just likes to live in rubbish.

One aspect I’ve not seen addressed in these hoarding shows is fear of emptiness. Perhaps to many a clean cleared area with a table and chairs looks fabulous, but if we consider that objects were comfortIng it might make more sense to help the hoarder decorate and make the spaces cozy with beloved items that provide joy. To go from being a hoarder to a minimalist doesn’t fulfill emotional needs for comfort, warmth and beauty.

All 3 homes looked lovely when they were done. Hoarding is a mental health issue, but Janice does not want to understand that yet. I hope she can come to terms with it so she can get the help of a good therapist. There is no need to judge these people. No one is perfect and we all deserve compassion and unconditional love.

Janice could (instead of buying clothes for herself) be added to a list of clothing aids that buy clothes for people in need (get a list of the size and gender and item need) and still go out to buy the clothes for the children or adults in need, ship them for free (on the clothing aid organization) to the people.

I have several hobbies too and when I get into a project it's hard for me to break away and clean. Especially when I am working on a painting. It's difficult to stop, go do something like clean or cook then return to where I left off on the canvas. It's bad enough when I have to stop and let my dogs outside but of course I do. They come before anything. I totally understand Nigel's dilemma but I am not a hoarder so that's the difference. He lost his partner and spiraled into a downward depression. I remember years ago when my second husband wanted a divorce. I was devastated and very depressed. I didn't want to do anything at all but I ended up staying with my mother and I wanted to die. She was such a bossy bitch and had the nerve to say to me, "Why can't you just get over it?" Well I DID get over it but it took about a year. A couple of years after that I happened to see some photos of my ex online and laughed my butt off. He was fat and bald. Not the man I married and I am very glad I got over him. If I had seen those photos earlier I would have gotten over him quicker!!!

Cleaning out my parents and in-laws’ homes upon their deaths was very stressful. Thankfully none of them were hoarders but it was still a massive undertaking. It’s just stuff and nobody is going to love it like you did when you are gone. I am a minimalist and my husband can be a keeper. I get on him about holding onto to too many things.

Just like alcoholics benefit from going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to find support from others in the same situation, I feel like hoarders would benefit from a Hoarders Anonymous. Most say they buy to fill the loneliness and there's a lack of support. Meetings would go a long way to prevent that. Members could be asked to bring 5 items with them to meetings. There's potential to help.

You need to remove the hoarder from the situation and get her the help she so desperately needs. While she’s away, the home is cleared out and repaired. She returns to daily supervision and continued care. No more credit cards or bank accounts. Esther is unable to manage her disorder. This is what happened to my hoarder neighbor. His family intervened and spent their own money to clean up the horrid mess he had created. He did not enjoy the privilege of having any say in the cleanup. He didn’t have a penny to his name, just a huge credit card debt for his siblings to pay. He’s home now and living in a completely remodeled space, with a weekly housekeeper and daily visits by a kind neighbor who buys his food, supervises the care of his two cats, and does his simple laundry. He has no ability to spend his way back into a hoarded house. His car is gone, so he cannot shop in brick and mortar stores. Brutal, but absolutely necessary.

Don’t blame it on your losses. Everybody on this planet has had more than their share of losses and they don’t all do what you did. And that place actually looks more dirty than hoarded. You have to clean. I have a lot of stuff in my house at one time, but it was all in boxes, but I still had a clear kitchen, clear, bathroom, clear, bed, and bedroom. And I lost my parents, and it really kicked my rear end. But eventually, you have to pick yourself up and get moving. And then you have to think these people that died in your life if they don’t want to see you live like this. You just like punishing yourself. Why do you want to live in rubbish? I have animals and I don’t want them to live in a dirty place.

А вот так приехать на машине, покидать в кузов половину её имущества (а именно так она воспринимает эти горы вещей) и вывезти на помойку - кто-нибудь, поступите с этими уборщиками так же, придите к ним домой, выкиньте их вещи, которые, на ВАШ взгляд (не их!) им не нужны! Вообще, что-то не так с отношением к этим людям, с настойчивым желанием общества избавить их от лишних вещей. Пожары, потопы? У чистоплюев тоже бывают пожары и потопы. Им эти вещи мешают? Они говорят, что нет. Есть большая разница между этими людьми, собирающими хорошие новые вещи, и полоумными бабками и дедками, забивающими своё жильё (особенно в многоквартирном доме) гнилью с помойки и кошками. Этим нужно просто помогать находить вещам применение, и тогда хомякоз не перейдёт в злокачественный. Имхо.

People don´t realize when you acquire things you don´t just own those things, the things take an ownership over you. These hoarders partly can´t give up anything, because they have invested too much to those things : money, their time. If there is something of resale value, they will never get back what they have originally paid for the stuff. So what can you do? Don´t buy. Easier said than done. Acquiring new things gives us distraction and people tend to medicate themselves by buying. Buying things is too rewarding and easy. For lonely people it is also a way socialize with others, reason to go out and about. Buying things gives people also importance, feeling of power and control.

Homeless people on the streets would give anything for a roof meanwhile people with hoarding disorder occupying homes allow them to get damaged and useless by filling them with rubbish, OK it is not deliberate and these people need help but seriously why is she allowed to stay there in that mess? There are so many people who see perhaps a broken table, clothes airier or tins of paint in a garden or even stuff in a skip, they all think its free BUT in fact even though its thrown out It still belongs to someone, even rubbish in a skip it still belongs to the person who put it in the skip until the skip is driven away then the rubbish belongs to the skip company. I always ask for permission to take any stuff away unless I am sure no one owns it like stuff on the pavement or road. Do people know that if they sort through fly tipped stuff you have a likelihood of being accused of dumping the stuff!!!

My mom and dad passed 43 days apart, I lost a nephew from sudden, unexpected death at 33 and my oldest sister in a very short span of time but I still cleaned my house ANF took the garbage out rather than throw it on the floor and walk on it!!
