British blues-rock group the Hoax consisted of Jon Amor on guitar, Hugh Coltman on vocals and harmonica, Jess Davey on guitar, Robin Davey on bass, and Dave Raeburn on drums. The members were all young students of the blues and had played together since they were in their teens; songwriting and arrangements were worked out together by all five members. The Hoax began to attract attention while on tour with the Smokin' Joe Kubek Band around England, and Code Blue Records label chief Mike Vernon signed them to a deal. Vernon, a veteran producer who had worked with John Mayall, Eric Clapton, Ten Years After, Savoy Brown, and David Bowie, was impressed by the maturity in the band's playing. Critics in England were also impressed with the band's prowess and heaped praise on the Hoax, comparing them to the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, and the Rolling Stones. Their debut album, Sound Like This, was released in 1995 on the Code Blue/Atlantic label (although Code Blue was later jettisoned by Atlantic), and the recording is a good reflection of their live shows. On it, the band pays tribute to its influences, such as Albert Collins, Albert King, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Robben Ford, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Absolutely love The Hoax. My Grandad took me to see them when I was about 14 in a shitty little pub in Skelton in about 1994/5. They played this song that night. I hadn't got into the blues yet and I was completely blown away. Every time we went to see em, I'd park myself in front of Jesse and watch in awe, then afterwards ask ask him questions about his guitars for ages and he never once told me to bugger off. Hugh is also a complete gent. Would love to see them again

It’s a cool night - the kind where the air brings a refreshing rush your way. I can just see the faint glimmer of the river far below, a few twinkling lights blinking at me. She’s relaxed by the river right now, probably - feet up, whiskey or coffee in hand, mellowing out after long hours of work. Does she glance up the mountains towards me? I sip my coffee and examine the fire crackling in front of me. A few orange embers, still glowing, drift upwards in the smoke - I turn to watch their lights go out as they continue their ascent. My hand is unusually steady for this hour, no shake present. I glance towards the snaking river again - the water moves slowly and confidently, a few ripples present in the moonlight where a branch has caused some white disturbance from the smooth surface. I can imagine her peaceful frame, leaning towards the water, enjoying the rushing sounds, some smooth music sprinkling the air nearby perhaps. She’d smile, knowing I’m thinking of her enjoying this peaceful night. I turn back to the dancing flames and toss another log into the heat. Cheers, Don. Many thanks for the song.
