The shot of the dwarves falling to their knees in sorrow for their fallen king always gets me. You don't see their faces but you feel their pain all the same.

I really enjoyed watching this scene during the movie. The way Gandalf reacts just fits him so well. He's been in Middle Earth so long and seen this happen countless times. Just like Thorin, tons have come and gone. He acknowledges it as a tragedy, but since he's seen this so many times before, he's mostly unaffected.
@sarshanksalot56758 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your comment. You made me think of how Gandalf experiences grief. I agree that he's is growing numb and exhausted to some extent, having seen all that he has seen, but I think he is still affected, still pained by lives that are lived so tragically, that come to an end having experienced so little joy. I think he yearns for a time of peace, not just in general but also in the personal lives of the doomed individuals he knows (like Thorin and his family). He fears that too much darkness still lies ahead, and he worries for who else it might touch--who will be lost to it and who will be scarred by it. I think that is one reason he loves the Shire so much--the hobbits are still bright, cheerful lives. Of course, that is mostly because they are unaffected by massive, tragic events like other mortal races are... It's interesting to consider how he uses hobbits to comfort himself and the world.

Guys hes literally smoking to relieve his feelings and destress. Thats how he grieves. That little smile he flashes to Bilbo is one of reassurance as if saying "Thorins death is a tragedy, but its not in vain" like everything is ok. They just have to move on now.

I was so disappointed and surprised that they didn't show Thorin (and his nephews) being laid to rest ... under the mountain with Orcrist and the Arkenstone on his chest. If they were worried about time, it could have been shown in the time that Gandalf was cleaning his pipe.
@WanderingRoe9 жыл бұрын
Same here - I was also surprised that they didn't take advantage of having Thorin and Thranduil mend their hatred for each other during the fight (they should have shown Thranduil laying Orcrist on Thorin's tomb. That would have been epic.)

I think Gandalf cleaning his pipe(not trying to light it) was a way of hinting to Bilbo that life continues on. Pipes still get dirty and need cleaning etc...
@someguysomewhere82578 жыл бұрын
holy shit you did good in English didn't you? He's cleaning his pipe cus he wants to smoke it mate. probs doing it loud to maybe get a convo going idk. and the close shot with the eye level camera angle is to show the grieving body language of Bilbo's, showing that he is feeling sad about Thorin's death, maybe even partly responsible, though that is debatable. the eye level shot is to make him seem as an equal to the viewer. no longer an insignificant hobbit or a hero. someone who experiences the highs and lows of life as we all do. GEEZ MATE DID U EVEN PASS ENGLISH! and the curtains were blue cuz he was sad.

Dane Glasoe I like your theory ☺ I also feel like this is a way for ending this adventure... It began with Bilbo smoking in peace, and it ends with Gandalf trying to clean out the dirt of battle and war out of his pipe... It sounds poetic :-) It probably wasn't meant that way, but hey, this is why there are no words, right ? Everyone can make his own interpretation!

This is one of the best scenes in the franchise simply because it conveys so much emotion without any words being spoken...although I think LOTR is better this scene will always hold a place in my heart
@briangalloway41939 жыл бұрын
Michael Heffernan I'd say The Hobbit movies were more about character development and relationships than action. LOTR was very impressive in its own right. I really like how the franchise showed the friendship between Thorin and Bilbo as it grew; something the book didn't really do. This scene is emotionally devastating; anyone with a heart will grieve with Bilbo.

This scene is important. It shows how this whole adventure changed bilbo and middle earth forever. The way gandalf sits besides bilbo, being like :" yep, that's what you've been missing on buddy." , along with the hopeful soundtrack, is splendid scenery to me.

the whole of the "direct line" was killed off; thror, thrain, thorin, fili and kili... But luckily Ironfoot got to be king! the dwarves have a bad reputation in losing their leaders in massive battles; Thror in the battle of Moria; Thorin, fili and kili in the battle of the five armies; Dáin Ironfoot in a battle defending Erebor around the same time as the battle off minas tirth etc etc

domfrommelb27 During the War of the Ring dwarves, men and elves fought togheter against the armies of Sauron at the north front of the war. They were defending all the countries behind them, including Rivendell and the Shire. While the Battle of Pelennor Fields was on (where Gondor and Rohan fought togheter and King Theoden died), King Dain II Ironfoot and King Brand (Bard's grandson) were engaged in the Battle of Dale. After three days of fights they were forced to retreat from Dale to the gates of Erebor, where Brand was killed and Dain fell while defending his body. Finally the battle was won, but at the price of great losses. This story is mentioned by Gandalf in the novel "The quest for Erebor" (Unfinished tales): "When you think of the great Battle of the Pelennor, do not forget the battles in Dale and the valour of Durin's Folk. Think of what might have been. Dragon-fire and savage swords in Eriador! There might be no Queen in Gondor" (meaning that Rivendell itself cold have been conquered and Arwen killed).
