Power of hindsight in knowing he wasn’t dead and also knowing what happens afterwards. If your mortal enemy was seemingly unconsciously floating off theres not necessarily any logical reason to leave. And If he had then Thorin wouldn’t have been able to kill Azog anyway which at this point in the plot was his key motivation, only at the end did he realise he had to sacrifice himself to rid the world of him.

I almost had a stroke trying to read most of these replies. Fantasy or not, that chest plate looks at least 2-3 inches thick, from Thorins position being on his back and only having the strength of his arm, he would have a hard time stabbing through a phone book, let alone metal plate. Yes, I know I'm thinking too hard about this, but why not go for his neck. No amount of storytelling can make me believe that he could stab right through that armour.

There's clearly a small current under the water, but apparently Azog managed to more or less stop after his jabbed his sword through the ice, and then, despite wearing armour then managed to muster up enough strength to not only crack, but completely smash through the thick ice and then some..... Like everyone else we're left wondering how do you generate such upward momentum when you're suspended horizontally under water and ice. LOTR logic i guess

When something like non-sense physics happen, just like in thos scene, your brain recognize that it makes no sense. It is not explain or anything unlike the ring. Writers would be unnecessary in a movie if you wouldn’t have to think and research to make a story. A child can make a story with emotions and epicness, but not complex worldbuilding and rules

Dain’s accomplishment in killing Azog is what makes him one of the greatest Dwarves of the Third Age, and worthy of being King of Erebor. Thorin had other accomplishments in the legendarium that made him just as great. There was absolutely no need to change any of it for the films.

It’s definitely plausible that the orc is stronger than most. My only concern is if the water under the ice is close to the ground which could be the reason he jumped incredibly high. They are a descendant of elves, concluding that the orc has a physical advantage like elves do.

@@NoNo-qk6uz First remember that it is a river with a waterfall. He is dragged by the stream to the waterfall. The bottom at the end of the river is not that deep. You can also clearly see that he stood with his body in a standing position to make a jump.

You would be able to see the bottom if it was shallow enough for him to jump off the bottom. It would have to be literally 3 feet deep for him to jump like he did.

Of course you can't see the bottom because the camera is only pointed at his face. Azog jumped and pulled himself at the same time. Also, don't forget, when he stabbed into the ice, it became more fragile because there is a hole in it. That's why the ice broke into pieces when he jumped.

I like this better for the ending than the book. Here Thorin is the big winner (not Dain, not Beorn), Thorin) and avengers king Thror. In the book he didn't have anything to really establish himself as a great warrior (all great warriors require some kind of feat to be established)

Its not stated whether thorin had mithril or not but its completely possible that he did indeed wore mithril. He died leading the charge against the vanguard and personal retinue of Bolg, which were massive orcs basically double the size of a normal goblin. Its not explicitly stated how he was mortally wounded aside from that in the fact that he was "pierced" and born away by his men. Tolkien did not often go into great detail in battles so its really left to the imagination, but considering he was in the thickest of the fighting as a commander in one of the bloodiest battles in the history of the north going up against the most elite of his enemies head on, even mithril can't save you from all that.
