THE HOLLOW SUN (FULL LENGTH NOVEL): ko-fi.com/jaketheriault/shop
Little bit of backstory on this project, we shot this in October 2014 for my final project in Intro to Directing at Asbury University. It was intended to be a proof of concept piece for a feature length script I have of the same title. Now, while it didn't turn out 100% as I wanted it, my crew and I are still immensely proud of the final product, especially with it having been made on the student level. If you're at all interested in the feature length script, please feel free to contact me.
Winner: Best Visual Effects - Highbridge Film Festival

Very well done. Especially considering your budget. The acting was pretty good with enough 'tics' to give everyone their own unique characters, and cues to their relationships with each other. This may seem like a small point but I do like the snippets that make up the intro. There is just enough information there to explain the set up while leaving the Hollow Sun and her crew's full story a mystery. Unlike far too many shorts nowadays, I did not need to read the blurb to know the set up. I wish you every success in the future.

The trouble with many modern short SciFi films is that they are extremely well made and acted, but always seem to be just an excerpt from a much longer production. Older films, regardless of their brevity, at least had a meaning in the context of the film, but these new films just break off when it gets interesting. Unless these films are indeed introductions to full length productions, I do not see the point in watching them just from a normal viewer's aspect. If these films are intended to be shown to film producers, the length and lack of ending may be understandable.

First of all, great job on the details and visual effects. It looks great, specially for a very low budget film. If this is the first episode of a series, I'm totally on board. It looks promissing. Although, if this is just it, I wish it had a little bit more of character development, instead of just sci-fi dialogue. I felt like I didn't know any one, it's very forgettable. If there were more episodes to come, this would be fine pilot. Good visuals doesn't always work for a movie with no conflict or characters.

I want to like this, and on a technical level I do. My issue is that you have an interesting plot point at the beginning with the sun collapsing (don't know what happened and what the consequences were), another halfway through with the emissaries of ra (don't know what they are about or the effect they've had on the world), and highlighting the difference between wormhole travel and hyperspace travel when most shows stick to having a singular ftl could definitely be interesting (if we saw it having an impact of decisions and conflicts). Overall a lot of potential and skill at play, but poorly realized. My suggestion would be to take one of the above ideas, and expand upon that, and hopefully we'll see a continuation of this in the future?

Interesing how those who have created something know how much creativity, work, and effort went into it. Those who have never created something do nothingi but criticize. When I was in graduate school my professor said for every scientist who promulgates a new theory or share a new concept, 99 hacks, mediocre uncreative people would come out of the woodwork looking to find all kinds of fault. A nd they would dedicate thier careers to disproving the ideas of the creative one. Which one are you?

As to our Sun, "Hollow" does not apply. 'Hollow' is defined as a space with nothing in it. The interior of our Sun is a volume with no space in it; 'empty' would be a more appropriate word. Only the surrounding space defines this subspace, which has no mass/energy/space/time or temperature. Also, subspace induces gravity. Want to know more? kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJfHmayehdpphrs

I could tell that it was an intro to directing project -- the two guys stood around talking for a long time, then suddenly walked toward the camera for no particular reason. And this Evil Corporation thing -- how many times has that one been used? Have you any idea how much mass would have to be sucked from the sun to have an effect on planetary rotation? And the result would force the planets to slowly move further from the sun, not into it. "Artillery cannons ready when you are, cap!" Precisely what sort of cannon (no plural), are NOT artillery? Come on! And high boots in space?? Next time, watch a few Twilight Zone Episodes -- you don't need a space ship to write a science fiction story.

Good filming, good acting, interesting story, although I am not convinced we could have the technology to mine the Sun and actually need to. Downside: was she captain because she was the bast person for the job or, as is apparent from some of the dialogue, because of positive discrimination and feminist ideology?

Horrible and unrealistic: No ethnic diversity, (once again white people are called upon to save the planet) why would you assume the very people who are responsible for destroying the planet today would be the one's saving it tomorrow. A group of cosmonauts barely in there 20's but would be assumed to have mastered warp theory, advance physics, thermal dynamics ... do you not know that ALL ASTRONAUTS AND COSMONAUTS, NOT MOST! Undergo years of training. The cast in this flick look more suited to be computer hackers. In fact, it would be more believable if a group of young hackers stole an aircraft and went back in time to unfuck a fuckup. For future works, put more older people in your starting cast, it's more believable if the captain is at least late 30's or 40's. It shows he or she had to make some sacrifices as a young adult to acquire the position they have. Add more ethnic diversity to the cast: white people only number 12% of the world’s population; the rest of the world consists of other and, they to enjoy watching good movies and seeing their people represented in them.
@TerryOhStudios
@TerryOhStudios 6 жыл бұрын
In all fairness, I 100% agree with you. I made this short for an Introduction to Directing class back when I was in school and unfortunately the student body at the university I attended was predominantly white, so casting options for age an ethnicity were frustratingly limited. If we ever had the opportunity to shoot the feature version of this script, I have every intention of adding an inclusion rider to the production.

@linvest2day "why would you assume the very people who are responsible for destroying the planet today would be the one's saving it tomorrow". Lmao The majority of scientists, engineers, inventors and employees involved with aviation & successful space programs are white you moron. Lol If more people of other races had jobs in those industries then sci fi writers wouldn't always assume that white people will be saving the world in the future. Segregation can no longer be used as an excuse so it is up to other races to step up. And spare us the world destruction bullshit because it doesn't stop hypocrites like you from using various types of modern technology (that were invented by white people).

@@TerryOhStudios Well of course when you are beginning to make your first few movies, probably in film class, you have limited options. Also, you need to gain expertise in so many areas it isn't funny. I think this was pretty good. I liked the acting and dialog, they really tried to act and sound like a seasoned crew. Special effects were kind of uneven. I liked the ships, but that wormhole made me pee myself laughing. What was going on with Jupiter? The plot, well, that description at the beginning seemed confused. What happened? We were mining gas from the sun, it destabilized and collapsed into a wormhole, and sucked Mercury through? But then we used the FTL anyway? Yikes, that all just kind of whipped by, if I wasn't a science fiction fan for over 50 years I never would have followed that, it was so compressed. Get better and make more movies! You've made an excellent beginning, sorry to be such a complainer but I want it to help. Good Luck! By the way I subscribed. 🤗

Nope - I don't like it. I know - it is low budget... but that doesn't mean, that the story should be totally pointless (it is not a real short film, there should be a meaning to all of it - it shouldn't be just "short"). The effects, the costumes, the "CGI" everything pretty bad. But what is worse is the whole science component which is totally incoherent.

Meh... The script is weird, the VFX are worse than our presidential candidates this year, the acting is bland, but I do like the set. One thing: if you are going to make a movie, put effort into it and make it something you don't need a huge budget for. Sci Fi, not a great low budget opinion. Drama: great! Also put an actual story into the film and don't resort to sexism for the humor (or lack there of)
