I think the scene with the man freaking out in the room full of his molds is how Jesus might feel if he saw people taking his image and commercializing it, also a couple scenes before theres a sign that says Christ for sale

Gotta agree with Matt in regard to John Wick. The dog wasn't the catalyst for the rampage...it was all about his grief over the loss of his wife. The dog was the last gift she could ever give him. It was an extension of her love for him, which he could never feel again. Someone took that away from him. If it was just an old dog that had been with him during his assassin years, I doubt the film would've had the same impact. Sure, John could've loved the dog greatly, but he wasn't IN LOVE with the dog. John's wife was his way out of a life of death and mayhem. A dog, alone, would have simply been a companion between jobs. No wife = no motivation.

Greetings from Scotland, Just discovered your show and it's rapidly becoming an obsession. I too, am want to, sing, comment on shots camera angles, and extrapolate of dialogue while watching movies much to the annoyance of my long suffering husband. So I feel heartened to know I am not alone. Have you guys seen Le Diaboliques 1955 Henri Georges Clouzot? I saw it when I was wee lassie and not only did it scare the bejeeez out of me but it sparked my love of European cinema. Keep up the great work!! Donna

This movie blew my mind, although at first I thought it was gonna be some kind of Hippy Mumbo Jumbo... in general it looks like an Un chien andalou as if it were a feature film. But I can relate to this movie a little more because there are various references throughout the film to the social/politic context of México (where I live) of the time it was made (even if the film is an ocean of metaphors and symbolism), and the scenes of people getting shot and killed are references of the "Corpus Christi Massacre" that happened in 1971 (something that was illustrated in the film "Roma"), but could be as well a reference to other shootings towards students in this period. If you look close to the victims getting shot, you can see that their arms are tied up and have their mouth taped, meaning they're being repressed.

Love "The Holy Mountain," mostly b/c of how it punches a hole in its own edifice like y'all discussed. I'm not as much into symbolism as I was when I was younger, but it remains very important to me.

The escene of the soldiers killing the protesters is about the Tlatelolco's Massacre. A student's protest in Mexico City 1968 against the olympic games and the goverment in general, the students were meeting in the Tlatelolco square, the military came in, surrounded them and killed hundreds of prtesters

I think the movie was more about how we as people often get tunnel visioned on one thing, to the point where we ignore everything else in the world and thus miss out on life. I think that's the reason the movie ended the way it did. It was never about a spiritual journey or transcending. It was about living life.

True Story : I actually saw this in my "film history" class during my Junior year of High School. It was a performing arts school and 10 in the morning, if that somehow helps make it make sense and seem a bit less creepy. Lunch was different that day. The class ended up being a class about "the films that made him want to become a filmmaker and how they led to him becoming a film teacher".

Craig's sorely mistaken when it comes to John Wick: the dog's a gift from his wife from the grave - it's like she's offered him an extension of herself. As long as the dog is around, part of her is still alive. The fact that it dies immediately is important because it makes John snap completely: here he's grieving the person he cared about the most, and it tears him to shreds. Then he gets hope in the form of a connection, and it's squandered before his eyes. The dog being killed is less a dog being killed and more a major chapter of his life being forcefully closed and shat on.

I'm pretty sure you guys have talked about it before, but I recently watched Blue Velvet and it is truly a masterpiece. What I found interesting where the little references to Twin Peaks (the trucks filled with lumber, the robins) even though the series came out a few years after Blue Velvet . I started binge-watching this in the gap between the last episode and this one. I love it, especially since I've seen very few movies (I think of all the ones that have been reviewed, I've only seen "The Great Mouse Detective"), and I'm embarrassed to say that I have no idea where to start with what I haven't watched. I want to become a film buff, and hopefully, I can start here. Is the "Dune" movie that we did get any good? I have seen "Twin Peaks" and "Blue Velvet", both of which were great, and I wanted to honor my late grandfather's memory by getting into "Dune", a series he loved.

Pluto is too a planet! You can even find pictures of it. I believe that it could just be a size discrimination because of it being the smallest in the universe. I mean for something that is so small that has Mountain ranges of over 11,000 feet tall, I say that it is a planet.
@donov25
@donov25 8 жыл бұрын
It is in fact literally size discrimination. At some point the decision has to be made what sized object is no longer a planet. Pluto isn't even the biggest non-planet planetoid in our solar system. If you want Pluto to be a planet you have to bring those objects with it.

Are you guys aware of Everything is Terrible? EIT is some guys who scour the thrift stores of the world for the worst and weirdest VHS had to offer and make bizarre videos with their findings. They put together a full-length movie made up entirely of dog and cat-related VHS footage called Doggiewoggiez and Poochiewoochies that is also a rather abstract remake of The Holy Mountain. It is truly fascinating, and I highly recommend checking it out.

You forgot italian gangster movies, Calibre 9 is the best, hands down. Its basically like a italian version of Quentin Tarantino films (along with semi-sequels, il Boss, and Manhunt), but heavily about organized crime and not so much about odd situations and snappy dialogue and more about how absolutely nasty, mean, and dangerous it is. Anyone can get killed, any time, any where. There is no mercy, and its not just rival gangs and backstabbing, when you someone shows weakness (might talk) and no longer serves their original purpose can be killed, others might just be killed because its more profitable to have one less person in the loop. The violence is way out there and the kill count is higher than the average 80s action hero film.
